Shaman Gothic & Venom were the epoch of LOTDK and perhaps in all of the character's history. Ground breaking when it came out.

Happy 105th Birthday to the King! I was hoping for a new Kirby deep dive, but this is still cool. Last weekend is August should become a Kirby celebration!

The first issue of Grant Morrison's 2000's Batman run would be a great story to cover. Adam Kubert art, Ninja ManBat's, Damian, and it's a great example of that run. JLA Earth 2 would also be cool to see.

It was Andy Kubert, not Adam, who drew Morrison's initial Batman run.

Whisper's character is modeled after the character from the eponymous play Manfred by Lord Byron.

The clocks: being a long time reader of Batman, it wouldn’t surprise me if Morrison had them all set to the time Bruce’s parents died. I bought this whole run when it came out. It’s gorgeous.

At one time, they had established that the secret door to the Batcave was a gimmicked grandfather clock, and you unlocked the door by setting the clock to the time of the Waynes' murder. Because that's how a healthy adult deals with childhood trauma...

I found where the issues ended to be interesting. Especially considering the month break between issues as originally published. But if you read the collection the story flows seamlessly as a single piece and it's even hard to identify where one issue ends/starts.

Did you notice Batman has six fingers on his hand after Mr. Whisper gets hit by the train? How did the artists and editors miss that? I recently discovered your channel and it’s pretty much all I’ve been watching for the last two weeks. Thanks for the good work!

A great series to revisit. I didn't fully appreciate what a badass Klaus Janson is when I read it back when it first came out.

As a newbie buying comics at this old local dvd store who the owner had comics he saved when he was a owner but was struck during the LA riot sadly . I bought the first issue of gothic just because of the cover itself and it felt like a dark gritty Batman story. Now I have more knowledge as I got older , I have to complete this series . Also the dvd store closed down and the owner was cool as hell … I was buying spawn and Batman books as a teen . Thanks guys for this

I know you guys aren't teaching an art class, but man I love all the techniques you point out; it's knowledge you don't get even in a lot of classes. I remember using zip-a-tone way back, and press-down lettering. I really enjoy your videos!

As good as Janson was in the mid 80s during the DD and the Dark Knight runs I think he levels up here. For me, I see this period of Janson's work as a one of massive growth and maturity as an artist. He hits a higher level. A level no one really thought there at least until he showed us there was one. All his stuff from this period is top notch.

This story isn’t talked enough about imo. It’s a great story for border line Asperger’s personalities like me who liked to hide out in my closet on sunny days and read stories like this.

Why is this ALWAYS out of print though? "Gothic" should be an evergreen title just like Year One, Long Halloween, Killing Joke, Arkham Asylum & TDKR. Even mediocre Batbooks like Death in the Family & Hush are ALWAYS easily available.

A minor character I enjoyed was the head monk/Priest of the monastery that Batman visits when researching his opponent. He debunks the mythos (which in this case is real) of the legend behind the adversary and offers up wholly rational explanations about isolation and its effects on the human psyche. This is a man of the church, but he is a learned man, a scholar of his faith, and while he tries not to contemptuously dismiss what Batman is asking after, it is clear he comes from the same Church tradition which asks things like: "So you were hungry, tired and alone when the angel came to you?". It was a very nice touch, especially in a medium where good clerics (ala MASH's Father Mulcahy or Little House's Reverend Alden) are often few and far between.

I LOVED legends of the dark knight, but I was always so annoyed when I didn't like the Batman in it, specially on these issues where all the other art was SO INSPIRING! always makes me wanna draw, but the batman I hate that cape so much once he loses that cape on the second issue I loved it so much lol.
