Darwyn Cooke's designs of DC characters is absolutely perfect.

Agreed. Cooke captures a nuance of these characters that makes you feel like a kid again.

Darwyn Cooke might be my favorite modern cartoonist. He hits all the boxes I enjoy with much elegance.

Darwyn Cooke is hands down my favorite artist. His production design is so sharp, like the Ferris Air offices. Love to see that midcentury design.

Probably my favorite DC Comic of them all. Cooke is one of my favorite artists ever and it's a shame the world lost him.

Cooke is the GOAT. Jim Rugg saying Watch-Men the way he does makes me smile every time. Keep up the great work, folks.

The Hal Jordan in the trench is very reminiscent of 'The Bridges at Toko Ri'. The covers look like the mid century 'modern' cinema cartoon shorts.

Darwayne Cooke still has the greatest con off the cuff interview of all time.

What an amazing accomplishment. Cooke's ability to channel all those guys these books are dedicated to is mind-blowing. Those black and white images are so reminiscent of what you see in the 50s and 60s humor mags, not just Mad, but also Sick and Cracked. Perfectly captures the era.

The Silver Age DC books may have been stodgy, but they were a massive success, which Marvel had a reason to respond to. Cook finds the magic ingredient that we tend to forget: the love and imagination and eventual nostalgia that kids (including him, I guess) invested in the new DC superheroes. Being a kid is a great part of your life and everything is new and accepted for what it is. If you were young and looking for images to dream about, whatever was out there was what you gave your heart to.

Darwyn Cooke is the name that I think of when I hear Modern Cartoonist. He's definitely on my Mt Rushmore of creators. I've made it my mission to pick up everything he either wrote or drew. So glad you guys got around to doing New Frontier because to me it is the pinnacle of pure super hero comic books. There is so much heart, passion, emotion, beauty, ability in these six books. It really is a masterpiece. These single issues are some of my most treasured books in my collection. Fantastic reinterpretation and retelling of golden age superheroics, nostalgia without sugarcoating the darkness that was present in the era.

So excited to see you cover this work. Your knowledge of comic history, general observations and the way those are delivered make this one of the most informative, entertaining and unique dissections of artists I love.

Man, I wish Darwyn was still with us, kicking ass and taking names. One of the best. (And by the way, Tom's right: The HBO WATCHMEN series is tremendous.)

Cooke's career seems along the lines of Jim Steranko, who, like Cooke, also spent time in the advertising industry. Cooke's time in the comic book industry was relatively short (like Steranko), but he made that time count with the contributions that he made. Great video!

DC put out a great collected edition of this on a toothy paper stock years back. It has a ton of backmatter like annotations with all of the different things Cooke referenced, character designs, pencils, layouts and an animated series adaptation chapter. Really good book if you can find it.

His Richard Stark adaptations are really fantastic - I don't connect with the source material in the way I do comics, but I think I enjoyed his work there as much or even more than this fantastic book.

Comics as art...at it's finest. Thanks for this one. Jim, my good man, off the subject... Man, a lot of your work is fucking impossible to find.... well almost. I found some stuff and am in disbelief. I am going to order. Some Cons coming up and if they don't work out, I'll download and have the finest copies possible printed. Your work deserves it and thank you for it. And Ed, you're probably tired of hearing from my ass by now....so I'll get back to you later. LoL
