Something that really impressed me about this volume and especially the next one (I’m actually reading Akita for the first time as this series is being released) is how easy Otomo sets up the space of a location the characters go to and how he maintains continuity and space between the panels in that location. Like Otomo had completely built these facilities in his mind before he ever started drawing

Love hearing you guys break down Otomo's work. Getting the point of view from professional cartoonists is such a treat.

This is the most entertaining breakdown of Akira that I've seen. Great job.

I bought the Akira manga in the 80s as it was released in Japanese, unable to actually "read" it until the Dark Horse translation volumes were released many years later. But what amazed me was how descriptive the art was in telling the story. You're able to "see" what the story is without speaking the language

The fish eye lens view of the incoming satellite laser beam had me smiling from ear to ear.

Apparently Satoshi Kon was one of the assistants, but I don't know who else worked on it or who did what.

Great series! The most thorough exploration of Akira that I've come across. Quick pronounciation tip- "Ryu" can be pronounced by saying "Ree" "You". I used to have the same problem.

Satoshi Kon was an assistant on Akira. It also looks like Otomo met up with a bunch of his Akira assistants recently, according to this tweet: twitter.com/Arion80/status/1123261933266903042

literally my only dumb nerd complaint with this volume, was when Canada (as Jim said) and kei fall through the roof of the nursery and just pop right up from a good 20 to 30 foot drop lasers blasting. Slightly unrealistic but I was fully willing to accept boy flying around so go figure
