Damn... I can't imagine throwing away animation cells. I would've been that one packrat employee keeping everything.

end? it was a revolutionary beginning of a new respect for anime as a medium internationally. And like one punch man, Akira was a unique gathering of talents that only happens once every 10 or 20 years. it wasnt an end of an era. Japan got worse economy after that, and everything, including animation had to be cheaper. but Akira was the beginning of the anime industry as we know it today.

160,000 cels originally created for the film. Maybe 40,000 cels survived of which 20,000 were donated by Joe Peacock to the Academy of Motion pictures in 2018. I'd be surprised if more than 10,000 cels are still around in private hands. At most about 100 cels come up for auction each year. These cels are very rare.

b13 is the animation number, (b layer, frame 13) if you can get a hold of the layout/ genga you can probably get a hold of the cut number.

I firmly believe the '80s was the greatest time for anime, especially the creative freedom that came with the OVA boom. And films like Robot Carnival, Angel's Egg, and of course, Akira really exemplify that.
@aus-li5 жыл бұрын
Yep, it went into the 90s, too.
@antgto5 жыл бұрын
@@aus-li I can agree with that. A lot of what made '80s anime dope definitely permeated through the '90s. Kinda fell off in the mid 2000s imo.
@calebdonaldson87704 жыл бұрын
@@antgto Yeah, I think a lot of the culture and momentum from the 80's and 90's died out in the latter half of the 2000's. The 2010's seem to lack its own identifiable culture. Early 2000's was amazing! ;D

Great collector's item, they are beautiful. I look at them and I know exactly from where they are in the movie, same with the ones I see from Studio Ghibli. I've lost count how many times I've watched these movies since the nineties.

I first learned those storyboard books existed from your earlier episode, and hit the webs to track down some copies. They weren't cheap, but they're more than worth it.

5:23 They might have had to shine a light on this particular cel for this shot because of the opaque black spot of the cape. I can't confirm, but it's a quest based on what I'm seeing. I didn't even know they had underlighting for those effects! I always wondered how it was done if animating gradients was so difficult with traditional mediums. I guess it should've been obvious but this is the first time I've ever really seen this stuff in action lol.
