Sam, I have always turned carving mallets from one piece of wood but yours is so cool that I may have to turn one of these two pieced threaded one. Thanks for the excellent video and the inspiration.

Marshall I was watching a re run of the Woodwrights Shop with Roy Underhill. He was making a woodworking mallet (square) and it gave me this idea for a video. It also is a good project for making threads with a really long connection which you really don't need in most cases. Thanks Sam

Excellent...! Absolutely beautiful...! The ebony looks amazing, also the whole shape and style of the mallet looks great... I've just turned a carvers mallet about a week ago but it was a large one... Watching this video has inspired me to turn a small two piece mallet, no threads though... Although, watching all your videos is also inspiring and one day I'll invest in a set if thread chasers and start practicing... Cheers... I'll watch part two now...

Sam, it seems like a pretty simple tool(male t. chaser); couldnt it simply be made with a three-cornered file, carefully spacing the grooves? I have a limited budget, but would like to do some of these cool projects.

My first inclination 7 or 8 years ago was to make thread chasers. They have to match PERFECTLY. I soon gave up on that. You can find a set of chasers for 80 or 85 dollars. I soon found out that doing this required metal working skills I do not have. Sam

+Robert Schuster I got it from Craft Supply. I have four sizes. Handy but cost too much. Shop around, maybe Grainger or some place like that.... Sam

What woods are best for mallet heads?
@WYOMINGWOODTURNER
@WYOMINGWOODTURNER 10 жыл бұрын
JR Well if you want to chase threads in them, they need to be very hard and dense. Boxwood, blackwood, ebony, mopane etc. I think some are made from Apple, pear, ash, or maybe oak. If you really want to actually use the mallet, I wouldn't get too hung up on the wood. I made two mallets (that I used to use more years ago) from woods like walnut and maple. One has a square head that is laminated just to make it more interesting. It will take a long time to wear it out the head of a mallet. Mine look pretty worn but there is still lots of life in them. Yes it is purely decorative. But you raise and interesting question---at least for me.......Would the ebony be tough enough for use or would it be too brittle. I will never find out. Sam
