Sam, this is one of your best videos on chasing threads, It explains the process very well and it sure helps to see someone actually cutting and mating threads. You make it look so easy. I am just getting started at it with mixed results. Thanks for posting these videos; they are very helpful.

Dave I think the Tormek system is great....however. I feel it is too slow. It just takes too long to set up and sharpen a tool. I think the best choice is a variable speed ( 1750-3500) grinder. I like the faster speed for dressing the wheel and the slower for tools. It is very expensive as well. RE: chasing. To practice, find the hardest wood you can. Hard maple works. It may be easier to learn at a slower speed. I have the delta you mention. It works well for chasing. Conti'd ..

Very interesting, thanks. I was looking for a lubricant to stop the male threads crumbling but now I know it is because I'm cutting too deep to get the right size so I need to take a little off the outside threads with my beading tool. I like your way of measuring the spigot size too. The beech I'm using still looks a little dry though so I might need a lubricant after all. If I do, can you recommend one please?

Sam, have you used the tormek sharpener ? If so, please comment. I enjoy your video's. Also, I've purchased sorby's chasers (16 tpi ) but I'm having trouble using them. I'm turning on one of delta's new midi-variable speed lathes. I've got the speed sit somewhere between 300 - 400 rpm, but they seem to crumble. Any advice.

A great job, I have dabbled with some wood turning, but be in a machinist I do it a little different.

+Daniel Morton Well you have the mechanics of chasing down. Now get some thread chasers and some dense wood and do it.....it is a blast. And if you have any questions, please let me know. Sam

Hello Sam Thank you for your video i really enjoyed it. I have not done any thread chasing yet but i have been making suction fit boxes for many years.I have been asked to start making my boxes with threads so your videos have been very timely for me and a great source of knowledge. Could i ask Sam if you could clarify lathe speed for the male and female threads, is it about 255 for mail and about 355 for female or keep all the same ? Kind Regards Col. Taylor Denmark , Western Australia

Col Glad you are thinking about chasing some threads. You are correct with the speeds you mentioned. Here is the reason for the difference. The female thread area can be longer. If you make it longer, it has no impact on the grain match. So, you can chase it a little faster. With the male thread, I make it a little shorter. Usually you have the shoulder to contend with and this makes it more difficult. You could start both at 280-300 just to make it a little easier. You will figure out what you are able to do, With any thread, once a thread is established, you can slow the lathe speed down a bit and finish your threads. Sam

Many woods will crumble IF.. your tool is not sharp, if the wood is not dense enough. On my website, wyomingwoodturner . com under demonstrations, you will find some materials/files on chasing which includes a list of woods which take a thread well. The wood is THE most important factor. Let me know how you do. Sam
