Carving a pumpkin with Blender

Happy Halloween! In this week's timelapse tutorial we'll be learning how to add an animated pumpkin carving to a real pumpkin using Blender's camera tracking tools

Watched couple of times but still can't understand how you render only "light" inside of pumpkin but not the pumpkin itself. Something with collections and second pumpkin must be but someone please explain a little more.

You duplicate the pumpkin with the boolean modifier and invert the solidify modifier so that it sticks a millimetre or less above the where the skin of the pumpkin would be, and then give that a 'holdout' shader, which basically means it renders whatever the background colour is (in this case transparent). Hard to explain but you're basically creating a mask around the entire pumpkin and cutting out part of it where the carving is being cut out.

Why did you give the patches an emission shader?

Because he just needs the raw image data, not any shader effect on it

Needs to be emission - if you used a diffuse shader you’d have extra shading being applied to the patches on top of what was in the original image, so when you applied it over the plate it wouldn’t match up right.
