As a result we have owned one of just about every model they ever made (except the 3000gt) and while I miss my 98 Eclipse GSX I reeeeeealy want another StarQuest... Baaad.. LS Swaps weren't a thing back in 2005 when I sold the Quest but now that they are I'm dying to get another shell. I will say mine wasn't stock though. Evo 3 Tommy Mak turbo, Marnal non jet-valve head ported and polished, greddy blow off, 3in turbo back exhaust, suspension techniques sway bars, KYB adjustables, eibach springs, custom clutch ect. So much fun but parts were a nightmare and I worked for Mitsubishi at the time too! That's why the LS option is so appealing. I'm just waiting to find the right one

In the U.K there were lots of cars in the GT category, Ford Capri, Ford XR4, Nissan 200SX, Toyota Supra, and this one. 200HP was about the limit people could afford in running costs, especially insurance. In a book about the Capri someone said that they used one regularly for transporting F1 engines to and from Germany. Unfortunately "Hot Hatches" like the Golf R ate most of their market.

I've driven my old '86 several times across the country and it was great until the motor started to spin bearings and head started cracking between valves. I put a head off a van without the fresh air injection garbage valves which were steel and made issues with heads cracking. But that engine is a horrible pile. Full of so many issues. I put a 14G turbo on it after completely rebuilding the engine bored it, forged pistons, lightened flywheel, balance shaft delete, 3inch exhaust... It was fast but just not very usable at that point.

Should have never sold my project Starion... needed to pay medical bills and i let it go. But what a special car it is and one of the most distinctly 80's sports cars out there. The build quality on these cars are very good for the time period and everything on them is solid. The G54b is a very stout and dependable engine once you've mitigated some of the flaws of its design with really easy mods. Mitsubishi made this car to take on things like the Porsche 944 on a budget and they managed to create a technological showpiece that was succeeded by the GTO/3000GT. Really miss that car and all the potential it had for me. What's really frustrating is how much the value has suddenly increased in the last few years. They were pretty much all worthless on the market up until about 4-5 years ago.

Those 2.6L 4G54 Mitsu engines were notorious shakers, being at the large end for 4 cylinder engines.....very agricultural units. No surprise it breaks studs. The smaller, single cam 4G63 version was very common as a forklift/equipment engine and while tough, was also quite primitive and shaky.

I own a 1987 Conquest that my family bought new in 1987. The ultimate fix for the broken studs is the web/connections between each of the exhaust ports on the manifold need to be cut which allows the casting to relax. The flat mating surface of the manifold then needs to be re-planed. With it stress relieved that should resolve future issues and also cracks that form in the casting bends itself over time.

My 88 Conquest TSi had the 4 spoke steering wheel. To my knowledge, the only difference between the two brands version was the Conquest said Conquest Tsi across the back of the spoiler, had a TSi logo on the front fenders, and no Mitsubishi logo on the steering wheel. The key had a Chrysler pentastar logo. I don't recall any other differences between the two. The guy I sold it to reported the turbo bearings failed in the mid to late 90's from poor oiling. I bet switching to synthetic oil could have helped avoid that failure, but that was back when Mobil 1 was 5x the cost of everything else.

The manifold studs breaking are caused by the aluminium head and exhaust manifold contracting and expanding at different rate causing the end studs to rock. After so many thousand cycles they fail. It is highly recommended to change all end studs while you're at it. So many engine types suffer from this problem. Some manufacturers make the manifold end holes much larger and use longer studs with spacers to minimize the stud rocking

Had an '86 Starion, first year with the wider body with fender flares. Only drawback was the paint chipped very easily on the flared sections, which they later remedied with clear adhesive covers. Was a fun car and fit in anywhere you went with it. Rallied with it all over the Northeast. Turbo got noisy at around 40,000 miles, so I sold it. Had also been interested in some Mitsubishi models from the early 80s, called Cordia and Tredia. Almost purchased a Tredia sedan. (Someone must have been thinking of tires when naming these). But I am glad I waited and got that Starion.

My only job at the time was delivering newspapers in my 83' F. Escort wagon 2nd/car. I still want one..

I always loved these cars. Really wanted one about twenty years ago but they were hard to find even back then. Also wanted a set of the wheels for my 300ZXT but never got close enough to a set to see if they would work. They are a gorgeous 16x8 in front and 16x9 in the rear. Neat car!!

The big difference that I always found was the tail lights and of course the Starion or Conquest badges. I owned a 1985 Dodge smooth body Conquest and then had a 1988 Chrysler Conquest TSi and a 1989 Chrysler Conquest TSi. Loves them all.

2.6L truck engine with notorious head gasket problems. The used car lots in the 90's couldn't give these way. BUTTTTTTT, man, the exterior styling is/was beautiful.

Used to work on those when they were still under warranty. They were great handling cars but lacked power even with the turbo. The turbo K cars could run circles around them.

I always liked these cars. I had a Mitsubishi based Dodge Challenger stick shift back in the early '80s. I liked that one as well. It had the MCA-Jet 4 cylinder. One weird quirk of that car was that the trunk lid was the stereo antenna. It was mounted with nylon washers to isolate it from ground. I discovered that while mounting a CB antenna on the trunk edge. That ended up grounding the stereo antenna so no reception and the CB antenna wouldn't tune. I isolating the trunk edge CB antenna mount from the trunk lid and ran a dedicated ground from the antenna mount to a body bolt in the trunk. That fixed both issues. Strange design.

Wow that is rare to see one that still is that stock under the hood. Has cruise. Rear abs and even the extra black airbox by the throttle that feeds air to the pre cat. Those turbos and pre cats are heavy and those manifolds tend to crack so people generally stress relieve them between the runners and that puts stress on the rear studs near the heatshield. Fun side note that 2.6l was a forklift motor:) so you really could sell it as a tractor.

You got some thing right wizard, but also missed some. Conquest and Stations have their own unique badging (outside and on the steering wheel), but the cars have more cosmetic difference. For starters, the tail lights are different than the Conquest. Also on Starions, the front air dam grill is painted black, while on the Conquest it is body color. A previous owner painted my cars dam to black, if you don't believe me look back at your conquest video, faded color matched air dam grill. Also Conquest and Starions came in different colors. Red is the most common, but for example my cars color, Y59 San Marino Yellow was only offered for 1988 and 1989 model years, Conquest Only. Wish I had you around to fix my car :( needs a turbocharger rebuild. Would happily pay you good money too :(

Would you still be willing to look at / fix my Lemon for a good chunk of change? I got the cash now and I want to crush it at this point. It is a lemon, the odometer has been rolled back. But it was my first car I bought as a 16 year old. I have barely driven it. It running and me driving it is just a faded / dim memory at this point.

I had an '87 Conquest. When these cars first came out, (meaning the TSI/ESI version), I thought they were the sexiest thing ever. I drooled and longed to own one. I did test drive one, but the insurance payment for a 21 year-old in a turbo two-door was as much as the car payment itself! So I left empty-handed. Until several years later when I found a nice red used one, which I bought with far too little inspection and looking over, lol. I loved that car.

20 yrs ago every starion/conquest owner I knew gave up on the car and sold it for nothing due to a bad fuel injectors that you couldn't buy replacements for anywhere. I would hope that since then somebody started producing replacements.

Spots on corners of rear spoiler may be from a car cover. I had a mint 87 Conquest the same color I kept covered in the garage. Over the years from friction I suppose this happened slightly, also on mirrors...

My Conquest was an '88 left over. Insurance rates were about the same as the monthly payment. Also, after you arrived to your destination you have to sit at idle for 60 seconds to cool down. My steering wheel was identical to this car.

Ive only had to drill out one exhaust stud, maybe ive been lucky, but Ive worked on a lot of these heads without that problem. One thing I would do while I had that exhaust manifold off is to cut spaces in the webbing, or just cut the webbing entirely out. This helps prevent cracking, which is a common problem with this manifold. Cracked manifolds can be repaired, Ive done it, but you end up with an ugly franken manifold.

I bet if you cut the connecting "ribs" between each of the flanges on the exhaust manifold it would stop breaking the studs. The shear off due to the expansion of the manifold. Because the whole flange is interconnected at the head, it HAS to move. If the flanges weren't connected to each other, the manifold could expand and not affect the distance between the flanges as much (it will STILL grow due to heat). Also, use copper nuts on turbo manifolds. I'm sure you know that from your airplane days.

While you have the turbo off, you might consider upgrading, the 12a spools super fast, but at 7 or 10 lbs, it only pushes like 200 cfm on a good day. a 16g and a manual boost controller really breaths a lot of life back into this old girl

Late 70's the Big3 invested in the Japanese automakers. Cars like these were called "Badge cars" or re-badged. Ford bought into Mazda Chrysler bought into Mitsubishi GM bought into Isuzu The purchases were for drive line technology mostly, the Japanese had the superior front wheel drive tech, better 4cylinder gas and Isuzu had the best 4cylinder Diesel / small truck experience. There are many other beneficial reasons, to many to list here. In the 80's it was a "can't beat em join em" decision that was mutually beneficial.

Mid 90’s, I worked at a Jeep/Eagle dealership. We would get customers looking to compare the Eagle Talon, with the Mitsubishi Eclipse, which were essentially the SAME car. The biggest, and most immediate difference between the two, was the fit/finish. Mitsubishi’s attention to detail in their finishing, and quality control was far superior.
