I've been watching this channel since it first started-- like a lot of others I followed Hoovie here and I've never been disappointed. I know a lot of folks will give The Wizard some grief about buying a vehicle that you know he will advise you NOT to buy in a few years, but his reasoning makes a lot of sense. First, Mrs. Wizard likes the car. Nothing else would matter if she didn't-- it would not even be an option. Second, he never has to turn a wrench on the Defender. One thing I've learned watching the channel is that neither of the Wizards keep a vehicle for a long time. Four years is stretching things, and by the time the warranty is up Mrs. Wizard will probably be ready for the next great vehicle that comes along. They will probably never test this vehicle's capabilities off-road, but they will be confident that it will go anywhere they want it to. And considering that the weather in Kansas can get pretty rough in winter I'm sure that it will be a safe and sure way to get around. So, congrats on the new car, Jennie! And kudos to you, David!

The starter alternator combo is pretty standard for these 48 volt mild hybrids. It's all the same concepts as you see on a traditional hybrid just scaled down to reduce cost and let them do everything through the v belt as a bolt on system to a more or less conventional drivetrain. The alternator is doing energy recovery during braking and probably providing some initial torque when accelerating from a stop. IIRC it's only like a 10 to 15% increase in fuel economy but it's also way less expensive than a full hybrid system. In this instance it also gives them a power source for the electric supercharger. What I'm curious about is does it do anything else with the 48 volt bus like an electric ac compressor or power steering? Edit: I really like these. I'm a sucker for a 2 door suv and I love small ish suv's with significant towing capacity.

WorldWar 2 tech . This was used on many US fighter planes . Turbo , super chargers. But they did use 105 octane aviation fuel with water injection.
@stacymcmahon4532 күн бұрын
Completely different setup for a different purpose. Those engines came with crank-driven superchargers standard to take advantageof the high octane gas. The turbo was added to retain power output at higher altitudes. They were huge and were optimized for 75% throttle or above. The Defender is set up with a big turbo to allow the 3.0 to have enough power to make a 5k pound car feel peppy, and the electric supercharger to mask the turbo lag without robbing power from the crankshaft.
I was implying that this configuration was in use over 80 years ago . The difference is the LR supercharger is driven by an electric motor controlled by the ECM. Superchargers rob horsepower when they are driven off of the crankshaft especially with a small displacement engine. The backup turbo cancels out those power losses.This configuration allowed WW2 planes to have great performance at altitudes at over 30 thousand feet.😊
@stacymcmahon4532 күн бұрын
@@jeffreycler495 Right, but what I was focusing on was the different purpose. Aircraft engines spend basically all their operating hours at power levels above 75%, while cars spend most of theirs below 25% Aircraft put the throttle to 75+ and leave it there, while cars are always slowing/stopping and accelerating, with the acceleration often being only to around 40-50mph, which takes nowhere near the full power output. Most cars could do most of their driving (and did, in the old days) with an engine under 100hp. If you could take the motor from, say, a P-47 and put it in a car, you would experience ridiculous turbo lag, because it's set up to run at or near max throttle, regardless of having both a supercharger and turbocharger. Big turbos mean big lag. The LR's motor is set up with the electric blower to fill in the output gap until its big turbo spools up, so that it can have that big turbo without the lag. It's a pretty slick solution (though not as slick as 'adding lightness' to the car would have been) but is there for a different reason, and with a different configuration, than the WW2 airplane engines.

Bought a three year JLR warranty to go with it. It lacks head-up display and at this age the Apple CarPlay needs the phone to be tethered by cable and the two screens are more laggy than the current Pivi-Pro system. Massive saving compared to a new model today but my one is immaculate and If I didn’t know different I would assume it to be new. It has actually covered 50,000 miles but I will not do a high mileage with it, probably about 8000 miles annually. It has new Pirelli 21” tyres and an electronically deployable trailer hitch and running boards, massaging heated and cooled fully electric luxury seats. It will have cost £100,000UK new but I bought it with the warranty for less than half that. A new current model with a similar spec, which will have four wheel steering, costs UK£130,000

The RAM 5.7 Etorque setup has an alternator starter/ hybrid motor. Some of the GM passenger car hybrids have that too. Once on the 401 near Toronto I towed one of these cars in a traffic jam, when the tensioner got weak. I was driving a flatbed tow truck at the time and when we all came to a stop, one car failed to move again. Instead of setting off again using the electric motor as hybrids do, a cloud of blue smoke came out from under the hood. The belt just slipped. Now that I'm back working as a technician again, I have not seen a single vehicle with this setup other than the etorque the boss has. I think those GMs will all be in the bone yard and the etorque Rams are few and don't seem to act up. I'm very curious to see how much time this new Land Rover spends a the dealer for warranty repair.
