Only the early engines used the plastic bodied cam chain tensioners. They had 3 different versions but by 2002 they were using the metal bodied tensioners. We have a 2000 XKR & when vetting cars for purchase we made sure the tensioners had been up-dated or we factored the cost of up-grading into the purchase price.

The AJV8 is not Ford derived at all. It's a Jaguar designed and developed engine, and was already under development before Ford took over the company. Ford used a version of it in a couple of their cars, but it is not and never was actually a Ford engine. That aside, great video, like always. Love your work.

When I bought my 2000 XK8 kitty, the first thing I did was to replace the upper timing chains and tensioners... but I did not remove the main timing chain or take apart the front of the engine! I found a company that had split upper timing chains for this car with replacement metal tensioners, and they could be replaced without removing the main chain. I was told that the split chain is similar to the design used on some motorcycle / sport bikes. That was at about 46,000 miles I think when I did that replacement (didn't take very long and I did it myself), and have had zero problems with it so far, now at 108,000 miles (the kitty has been sitting for the past 3 years due to a rusted gas tank leaking gas, that rusted due to a failed water seal on the back window of the convertible top). But just got it running again with a replacement gas tank, and the engine still purrs like a happy, fast kitty cat! These are one of the most beautiful cars ever made. I hope to keep it for a very long time.

I just want to start by saying that I always enjoy the Wizard's approach to the video's he posts, they are very informative and I've learned a lot since I have been watching them. However, in this particular video there is a statement that is inaccurate concerning the V8 engine in the XK being reviewed; Wizard states that it is a Ford engine. If you do any research on this you will find that the engine was designed by Jaguar and prior to the purchase of the company by Ford in '97. It is true that the engine was manufactured in a Ford factory in the UK (The Bidgend Plant which has recently been closed). Ford took the engine and applied it to the Thunderbird and Lincoln LS of the same vintage as the XK after some minor redesign. The V8 in the XK is to the design that has evolved from a 4.0 litre to a 5.0 which is still manufactured today and used in the F Type. To check what I'm saying here, I would encourage you to visit the Jaguar Heritage web-site. Keep doing what you do Wizard, it helps us all

I had an 2005 XK8 for 8 years, put 120,000 miles on it and loved it (traded up to a 2014 XK last year). Never had any major issues, just regular minor and medium ones. The airbag light was on in mine too and no one could ever get a read on it, so it stayed on for like 6 years. Strangest issue I had was internal corrosion in the battery cables which created starting issues but also wasn't readily apparent by looking at the cables. Great car though and this looks like a wonderful example of it.

I have owned a 2000 XKR Convertible for 6 years and a 1998 XJR Sedan for 3 years. Please note that these are 20+ year old cars. They have been extremely fun and quite reliable EXCEPT for the rubber (and sometimes plastic) coolant lines. And there are MANY of them. The most expensive are the "valley" rubber hoses in the "V" of the V-8. Those require the supercharger to be removed to access. The other favorite is the heater hose "octopus" at the firewall that's a bitch to access (hence having someone else perform that task for me), But don't let that deter you if your bank account is willing & able to take the hit. These cars are sexy and fun to drive. A great alternative to the Corvette/Town Car.

It has stayed in the garage all of its life with no wear or damage to be found with under 40k. The only times it gets driven is when I drive it to get serviced and to do a light detailing. Now I will take a closer look at things and will keep in mind the timing chain issues and if I should need to do it in the future. I also have two 1993 Cadillac Allante's as my own cars and these two cars really make some very enjoyable rides being fun and very fast!

PLEASE, can you Wizard, and WatchJRGo stop calling this a Ford engine, it isn't. Wrong. If you study the lincoln ls V8, There are very many similarities between it and jaguar. Maybe the Jaguar xj6 4.0 was stand alone, but by this era of xk, the engines were probably lincoln/ford developed for jaguar, which is why jaguar had so many problems. Some of those coolant hoses made no sense. And while the engine was kind of basic, there were alot of cheap, ford derived work arounds to turn the lincoln 3.9 V8, into a late 90s jaguar 4.0. From the late 90s jaguar 4.0, Jaguar(ford) could go on to make it 5.0 and beyond. Since ford owned Jaguar since the early 90s, we may never know the truth.

* "And beyond", denotes super charging naturally aspirated engines. Ford was ahead of it's time, but low on money. This leads to the dropping of mercury and jaguar lines much later. Blame jaguar for a strong lincoln, but a weak ford. They sold jaguar as soon as research was done.

As a 50-year owner driver racer and restore of the Jaguar mark, I have one small correction for your introduction. Jaguar was a wholly-owned but separate subsidiary of the Ford Motor Company. At no time did Jaguar have any input from Ford with regard any engine design or for that matter chassis design. Ford however took patents and advise from Jaguar on noise vibration and harshness on many Ford models. The Mustang and the small T-Bird we're based on the Jaguar designed w e d platform.

Agree. XKR owner here. I see this said so often. As I understand it Jag were working on the V8 before Ford bought them. What about the entry level Jaguars with the Duratec engines built on Contour/Mondeo chassis? What about the improved reliability after Ford bought Jaguar? @jagjet9153

To be fair, Jaguar was in fact forced to produce the X-type which was a refrocked Mondeo. However many brands have lifted the patents from other companies that they've Acquired and then sold on. How else could BMW having no four-wheel drive, have come up with a Range Rover clone. In this regard Ford was very cowardly in as much as in 1999, they were in acquisition mode. They bought into Mazda, Aston Martin, Volvo, and Jaguar. They also purchased Cosworth, and Pi engineering along with the Stewart Formula 1 team. In doing so, with a modest budget and individuals best suited for tractor design and maintenance, ran Jaguar racing oh, I might add into the ground and the arms of Red Bull.

A work colleague had one in Summer 2000 when we worked in Italy. I was a passenger many Sunday evenings going to Cuneo to watch volleyball. I remember very comfortable seat/ ride, and acceleration was like a nice push in the back of the seat. And when it broke ( it was brand new ), the local dealer gave him a XJ6 saloon as a loaner. He bought it as a tax gain - if he bought/ owned the car outside of Ireland, owned it abroad for 12 months, and then owned it for 6 months+ when his job assignment finished and he brought it back to Ireland, he would save the 25% Irish car registration tax. Then sell the car with say, 2 years of ownership, and still make $25,000. Next assignment I worked in Portugal, where another Irish colleague did the same thing, this time with a XKR, and another with a new Porsche. But the Porsche guy, when he got back to Ireland, liked the car so much, he never sold it.

Depending on the build date, this might have the metal tensioners for 2002 they began changing them late in the build year. My 2002 XKR had metal tensioners in it. Also, other than the motor, the transmission is different between the supercharged and the non supercharged. Mainly the RS have the Mercedes 722 trans from the v12 benzes. Edit: I had the fuel gauge problem. It was the sending unit on mine. Have to drop the tank on the verts. That's a pain. The coupes have enough room in the trunk to access it. Funnily enough, these cars have a smell that is unique to them. I had two, a 97 xk8 and now the 02 xkr and they have that same smell. It's a elegant, leather smell. Very strange

I love how these cars look. I'd like to own a coupe version at some point although unfortunately in the UK's climate they rust very badly. Just a note, the AJ-V8 engine is a Jaguar designed engine, it's not Ford derived. AJ stands for 'Advanced Jaguar'. Ford did of course use the AJ-V8 in some of their models, presumably hence the confusion.

I did guess the problem on the coolant leak, because my 2002 XK8 plastic hose (tube, really) broke about a year ago, spraying coolant out as I drove along. Not a good bit of design. Mine's 80,000 miles, but maybe plastic lasts longer here in the UK due to the damper, cooler weather? By the way Wizard, it's not a Ford-derived V8. You're thinking of the Duratec V6s. The Jag V8 is an all Jag design, which probably explains why it has stupid plastic coolant tubes. This aside, the XK8 is a superb car to drive. I've had two, and I love them. Better than its Aston Martin DB7 cousin by a long way. Greetings to my American cousins from England. I'll be off to polish my "bonnet", now...

Slight correction, the 4.0 v8 featured in the xj / xk/ s-type of that period was designed and produced by jaguar, this engine mechanically does not share any parts with perviously made Ford engines and Ford had no involvement with the design of this engine. There are a mix Ford and denso sensors (throttle position sensor, injectors and ignition coils are denso, the fuel pressure sensor and a couple of other sensors are generic Ford parts bin stuff. Ford did use a 3.9 v8 which was used in the Ford Thunderbird and Lincoln LS , this 3.9 v8 uses the same block as the 4.0. Ford / Lincoln models never got the 4.2 v8 released in 2003 and was exclusive to jaguar. The 4.2 / 4.0 / 3.9 do share some gaskets and sensors however the 4.2 is significantly different from the 4.0/3.9.

I have read several books on the Jaguar XK8 and the 4.0 L V8 was the 4th engine ever designed by Jaguar. It is NOT a Ford engine. Ford may have used it in their Lincoln’s in the later 90’s, but it is a Jaguar engine. When Ford purchased Jaguar, the XK8 was in already in design. As the years went buy, since the XK8 was produced from 1996 -2006, Ford did add their own components such as AC compressor, supercharger, and electronics such as sensors. Bottom line: engine Jaguar and trans Mercedes and later ZF.

Seems a little premature to replace timing chains and plastic guides. I'm just selling my 1996 XK8 convertable which I've had from new with 107,000 miles on the clock and have never touched them. In fact did all the servicing myself which was once every 10,000 miles changing oil, oil filter, air filter and break pads when necessary. Disc need replacing now. That is all I've ever spent on it apart from the odd light bulb and windscreen wipers etc. Just pulled it out of storage after 9 years parked up in open barn. Put new battery in it and it started after 20 seconds! That was with old stale fuel in it. Drove it out of barn and apart from a few small glitches is ready for new MOT test... Mice had eaten their way in from boot through to interior so that was annoying however apart from smell and two buckets of nesting debri got away with virtually no gamage. They eat foam from under seats and dragged in seeds and acorns, but never touched and chewed through a single wire including the very tiny ones. Maybe wiring loom is treated with mouse repellent but was amazed zero damage occured with so many hidden wires being exposed and right beside knawed seat foam etc......

Amazing car. We had a 2000 V8 S-Type years ago. Similar problems with the engine plastics, but otherwise a great car with a turbine smooth engine. The 5-speed is a Ford unit and a great box. One flaw though, the solenoids are housed in aluminium and wear to the point of bad operation. The gearbox is then waste metal. I did however find out afterwards that there was a brass resleaving kit to remediate this. This makes me want to buy the 4.2L V8 and 6-speed ZF version of the XK.

My X5 has a ZF 6 speed and despite getting all new valvebody, solenoids, sleeves and filter not too long ago. It's begun slipping and now is in the shop for a permanent trans failsafe at only 100k. I've heard so many people having issues at unreasonable mileage with ZFs but perhaps it's more the cars theyre put in and the kinds of drivers that buy said cars used.

I have some tips on that XK8 for you Mr. Wizard. I was wondering about that XK8 when I saw it in Hoovie's Ford Woodie/Rapide video. I have an 04' XKR Coupe in Silver with black interior. I'm sure you already know this, but for the secondary timing chain tensioners, make sure to install the metal body third generation tensioners. They require shorter bolts than stock. A common problem regarding the airbag lights is with the module under either the driver's or passenger seat. The module sometimes can hang too low and get pinched under the seat, specially in the lowest setting of the seat. Relocating the module to a higher point in the seat, making sure the wires are in good condition, and inspecting the solders should solve the problem. No new parts are needed. I noticed that the trim in the shifter that has the PRND432 has a broken piece. There is an ebay seller that sells an aluminum version of that trim. If the owner is interested, you can message the seller at his ebay page so that he can make a new one and list it for sale: www.ebay.com/usr/solar_signa If the owner wants to know what it looks like, you can message message me and I will send you a picture of mine.

I doubt it's the toe that's an issue. New shock mounts are more likely the culprit on these. As the foam bush of the shock mount wears out with age, the ride height in the front drops and the camber becomes more pronounced, leading to increased front inner tire wear. It's a common issue on these. There's a company named Welsh Ent that makes a polyurethane version of the shock mount that is a little bit more durable.
@michaelmccawley7281
@michaelmccawley7281 4 жыл бұрын
@@gallardogd560 Yes, I have noticed the tire wear, plus the degradation in the ride. Both front and rear shocks mounts will be replaced, and the camber set to rights. But those can wait. I am addressing the items that can ruin the motor at this time.

@@dmsasko My experience, and the forums will back me up on this. 95% of those problems are the battery. The electrical systems in Jags is extremely sensitive to voltage drops. So, if you start your Jag one morning and see that you have a christmas tree lit up on the dash, with suspension fault, abs fault, transmission fault, or other random warnings, and, in the case of the XKs, the windows lowering and not rising back up upon closing the door, your battery is starting to die. Get a fresh new battery and the problem usually goes away. This is not like the days of Lucas when electrical problems were actually electrical problems... except for that 5% of the time it is.

One issue that was not mentioned is that the engine is effectively scrap if the bores wear or are scored in any way as the engine has Nikosil surfaced bores that cannot be overbored or refurbished. Jags from this era suffered badly from the low grade parts that they were forced to use from the parent company.
@sparky4878
@sparky4878 4 жыл бұрын
Shouldn’t be a problem now. Jag use Nikasil at first. The problem was the fuel of the time. If the engine still has those liners but running fine it’ll be good. Modern fuel doesn’t have as much sulphur. Also Jag recalled and replaced engines. Then they went to traditional liners. Not just a Jag thing, BMW tried Nikasil too. It wasn’t something forced on them to keep costs down.
