How’s THIS for a World Exclusive!
Mat’s flown over to Japan, and he’s got his hands on every edition of GR Yaris ever made! But that’s not all, he’s going to be the first journalist EVER to take these cars around Toyota’s all-new test track!
During this video, he’ll get his hands on the 1st generation, the Japan-exclusive GRMN, the 2nd generation (both manual & automatic), and the limited-edition Ojier & Rovanperä editions!
So let’s take a look at how they compare. Starting with the 1st GR Yaris, it comes with a 1.6-litre 3-cylinder engine that produces 272hp and 370Nm. It’s equipped with a switchable four-wheel drive system and a 6-speed manual gearbox, and it truly is an affordable and incredible rally car for the road!
Then we come to the GRMN edition. Only 500 were ever made, and while horsepower is the same, torque increases slightly to 390Nm. The car also comes with several other upgrades, including a carbon fibre wing and bonnet, a lower ride height, and a load of Alcantara on the inside!
Then we come to the second generation. Power has been increased to 300hp and 400Nm, and it’s available either manually or automatically. It comes with stiffer suspension, a 20mm lower ride height than the gen one, and a set of digital dials. It also comes with a loftier price tag, starting at £40,000.
And then finally we have the two limited-edition models, built with personal input from drivers from the Toyota Gazoo Racing WRC team. Both editions have exclusive paint jobs, improved rear wings, as well as drive mode settings personally chosen by the two drivers. Both cars are limited to just 200 editions each!
It’s the video every GR Yaris fan has been waiting for, but which will Mat choose as his favourite? You’ll need to keep watching to see for yourself!

its great that Toyota have let them go in this direction, i used to work for them, and they really died in sports cars with the later Celica's/MR2's and no Supra. The LFA / ISF and 86 started a mini revival, but the Supra and then all the GR stuff is awesome. More of this please!!

@@ArthaxtaDaVince777 there's actually two GRMN version of the Yaris. There's the 'Yaris GRMN' which predates the GR Yaris by a few years and sold just in Europe. It's the one that uses the Supercharged 1.8L 4cyl producing 209 hp and FWD only. This thing is pretty much a unicorn and very rare since only a few hundreds ever sold. Then there's the 'GRMN Yaris' that appeared in this video which is the track focused version of the regular GR Yaris. The difference in lap times is also something to note. They're doing it in a short track with the manual being driven by a professional driver who really hammering it down, getting a 0.2 difference is no slouch and the gap will be even bigger when you add other factors like amateur drivers & a longer track (which Toyota engineers claimed a 1 second difference in Fuji Speedway)

For me the GRMN is really the one I'd lust for, it's the best looking but I still love that the MKI is a car developed with direct involvement of Tommi Makinen, literally rallying around Finland, which isn't the case for anything after the MKI. The original is also the homologation special, all the newer ones aren't as the body shell has been further modified (have a feeling the motorsport cars are based off the MKI)

Ever since i discovered the Yaris, I want to own one. Seems to be so much fun in those cars. Especially with the gearbox upgrades you can do. Who doesnt want to own a fun and nimble rally car?

I wish we got the GR Yaris in the States. We got the GR Corolla, which is cool but I love my coupes.

I love my Mk1 GR Yaris circuit pack. What a car I was lucky to secure on 0% finance back when they came out! Mental!! 😱 Definitely a keeper!! 😍 🥰 😎

I’m in the ballot for a gen 2. The price hike has put me off a bit , like both special editions but the extra money is a bit strong for the seemingly small difference . Let’s see,

This is my favourite car to come out in the 2020s. I know we're only four years in but I'm calling it now- it's the car of the decade.

damn I was not expecting such an awesome video! good job Mat 💪🏻 but 1 major thing I don't like about the Gen 2 GR Yaris is the interior, why they made it look like an 80s car? =/

It is so nice to see all the engineers excited to see how it performed and also have a laugh. Toyota seems like a great place to work. Imagine what the gen 3 is going to be like 👍

Yep me too. I bought it too in DAT but red. expecting bigger difference and better comments from driving too. Let’s see if it makes better result after small tune. the more power the better it should be vs manual. Still I am not sure if trully D is better choice or just stunt for that video. According to press info manual should be more punchy.
