Great review and there's certainly plenty to get excited about, including adaptive dampers (on a Skoda!), but I'm sorry, that jerky gearbox issue is a deal breaker for me. My ma has a Skoda and it's really annoying. If there's one thing that makes her car feel really cheap, it's this issue. Is this one of VW's cheaper gearboxes or something?
@JULIAN711027 жыл бұрын
lapamful its because its a double clutch system, its basically an automated manual gearbox with 2 clutches so being jerky at low speed is very normal its the nature of a double clutch transmission
@lapamful7 жыл бұрын
Julian J ok thanks. That makes sense. But I'm just trying to remember other automatics I've driven that have been as bad as that. But maybe they weren't double clutch...
@patrikcent17 жыл бұрын
you know whats funny actually? The "jerkiness" of the Skodas DSG might be on purpose... as Czechs consider that the jerkiness makes the car more sporty and Czechs, especially Skoda drivers feel like Schumacher anytime when driving. I think it really might be on purpose. Even some BMW M customer survey stated that customers want jerky shifts because it made their car more sporty in their opinion. However I dont understand why do they use a dry double clutch system in Skodas
@lapamful7 жыл бұрын
Not sure if you're joking or not. But we're not talking about jerky shifts in the way an Aventador does. We're talking at slow speeds in traffic where you speed up a little, then slow down and the gearbox doesn't want to shift into 1st for ages, then when it does there's a huge jerking motion.

I've been planning on moving from an estate Mondeo mk4 to a reasonably priced used SUV and I was thinking about the Kodiaq. It has 4x4, plenty of kit and looks alright... But I was kindda negatively surprised when I sat in one... Don't get me wrong, this Škoda offers a ton of equipment and capability but it all felt... cheap... Cheaper than my 2011 Mondeo to be honest. The plastics are either hard and scratchy or like level 1 soft touch (to elaborate, less soft than my 13 year old Mondeo... More like "put some soft touch here so they don't complain" 🤷♂️). The doors feel too light (almost like a Dacia Duster), also the steering wheel feels awkwardly pointed up at a far greater angle even on lowest setting (like a bus). It's not because it's a SUV, I drove trucks/pickups that felt more like a car than the Kodiaq in terms of steering wheel position... I feel like this car, along with the entire VAG group has been hyped up and is now overpriced. Škodas have been a good choice in the past for price conscience buyers, but now a well kitted Kodiaq from 2018 can cost up to 40 000€ which is bonkers... In 2023 a well kitted 2018 Kodiaq with 4x4 should be priced around 20 000€-25 000€. That's what they are truely worth... It's a good SUV with many smart solutions, but overpriced... For 40 000€ one can buy a used X1 fully loaded with a much nicer interior

What put me off Skoda is a friend of mine who bought a 2017 Octavia two years ago has already spent £1700 on engine repairs on it. What's shocking is the mileage was only around 52k on the clock when it first broke down and left him stranded.
@-Yurkey Жыл бұрын
@@NapoleonDynamites to be honest my old Passat B5.5 was the same way... Didn't leave me on the side but constantly went into limp mode, it had a lot of engine repairs that were needed (like EGR, Turbo, MAF, etc. ). Not only engine, suspension parts were going out like crazy... And as a bonus, the AC was leaking and the door locks were failing, rust on the front arches + there was a leak in the footwell which was caused by a clogged gutter hole underneath the battery 🤦♂️

I have already seen this vehicle in the flesh and it looks awesome. However, as you point out the backseats are only for small kids so not much use. However, the biggest use of these vehicles is as load luggers, carrying dogs, towing caravans and horse boxes and here it fails miserably. The most popular models aren't capable of towing at all and none of the UK models can tow the 2500 kg max limit because the big engines are all 7 seats and that lowers their tow limit and nose weight. Furthermore, you want to put stuff on the roof again it's a meagre 75kg. You look at the sorento the seats can take full sized adults, tow a lot more and has a roof load of 100 kg. Even look at Passat superb, can carry as much, tow more and have higher roof capacity. They have not done their research in how 4x4 are actually used, it's no good making a big 4x4 and then throwing in token extra seats that aren't useable and making it a useless tow vehicle.
