Amazing voice Gráinne. This has a very similar arrangement to the Alan Stivell version from "Again". An excellent mix of drums, piano and guitar. Just the right amount of ornamentation, delay. Beautiful!

An Drúcht Geal Ceo 1.‘Gabháil síos a’ gleann dom i measc na gcrann As I went through the trees in the glen Go dtí an chathair aoibhinn shuairc. To the city, light-hearted and pleasing. Bhí na slóite teann fána mílte lann The crowd was strong with a thousand arms A’ teacht aníos gan ghruaim. coming down that way carefree. 2. Ní raibh crónán caoin as béalaibh píob No lamenting hum came from a fife Ná drumaí a’ tógáil gleo. nor drums making a battle hew. Ach an clog go binn a’ cur fáilte bhinn But the bell sweetly welcoming Roimh an aingeal sa drúcht geal ceo. the angels in the bright foggy dew. 3. Chroch siad in airde a mbrat go hard They hung their flag up high Os cionn Chaisleán Bhaile Átha Cliath. Above Dublin Castle there. Níor ní leo bás ‘fháil ag Sud-El-Bar ‘Twas not for them at Sud-El-Bar to die Agus Éire ina ndiaidh i bpian. with Ireland left behind in pain. 4. Is ó lár na Mí, sea ghluais an scaoth From the middle of Meath, the swarm did move De laochra líofa beo. Of lively polished heroes. Agus slóite Gall a’ bailiú ’nall And crowds of foreigners gathering over there A gcuid gunnaí sa drúcht geal ceo. Their guns in the bright foggy dew. 5. Ar shiúl mar chadhain, mo chreach is mo léan, Off with the Geese, alas and alack, Tá na céadta curadh cruaidh. Are hundreds of hard warriors. Tá a gcnámha sínte ag Suvla an tsín Their bones scattered at Sulva’s stretch Nó fá chósta na mara thuaidh Or by the coasts of the North Sea. 6. Dá bhfaigheadh siad bás sa bhaile ar láimh If they were to die at home, at hand Leis an Phiarsach tá inniu sa ghlóir, With Pearse today in the glory, Bheadh a n-uaigh faoin tsliabh i measc na bhFiann Their graves would be at the foot of the mountain among the Fianna Mar a dtiteann an drúcht geal ceo. As falls the bright foggy dew. 7. ‘Siad plúr na laoch a thit faraor Alas ’twas the best of the heroes that fell I mbriseadh cruaidh na Cásc.’ In the tough Easter Rebllion. Agus d’fhág siad sinn go cráite tinn And they left us sick and tormented Ag éagaoin fána mbás. Lamenting their deaths. 8. Is bhí súile an tsaoil a’ breathnú an ghnímh As the world’s eyes were watching the brave deeds rinne clanna Gael sa ghleo of Ireland’s sons in the battle. Na leoin a d’éag le solas gléigeal The lions that did fight with the shining light Na saoirse sa drúcht geal ceo. of freedom in the bright foggy dew. 9. Phill mé aníos fán ghleann arís I returned down to the glen again Is mo chroí bocht lán de bhrón. And my heart full of sorrow. Is mé scartha chóich’ le plúr na laoch And I forever separated from the best of heroes Nach bhfeicfinn arís níos mó. That I would never see again. 10. Is i lár na hóich’ sea bhímse ag guí And ’tis in the midst of the night I do pray Le bhur gcónaí bheith sa ghlóir. That you may dwell in glory. Nó ruaig sibh na tráill, a fheara Fáil, For you rid us of enslavement, Oh men of Ireland, Nuair a thit sibh sa drúcht geal ceo. When you fell in the bright foggy dew. These lyrics are SO different from the usual lyrics in English - these lyrics tell a real story! Thank-you!

The song is about the 1916 Easter Rising, an armed revolution by Irish nationalists during the First World War the rebels were plagued with bad luck throughout the planning of the Rising however it went ahead anyway and on Easter Monday 1916 the Irish Tri-Colour was raised above the GPO in Dublin and a proclamation was read declaring an 32 county Irish Republic the Rebels numbering under 2,000 held out for five days against overwhelming forces and by the end much of Dublin was destroyed the leaders of the Rising were executed by firing squad which included a cripple, a man who was married an hour before his death, and a socialist who was injured in the Rising and had to be shot in a chair. The repercussions for that rising led to the eventual birth of the Irish Nation through a bloody war of Independence

It's an Irish language version of a song originally in English about the Easter Rising. There are numerous versions of the original: 'The Foggy Dew, amongst which The Chieftains' version is a strong contender. This version is not a literal translation of the words of the original though in the spirit of it.
