This is a very valuable lesson. Definitely learn this one everyone! Then after you get this one down, do it in 3's and even 5's. Then do the same things using diatonic scales. Also, learn everything you do in different positions within that key. Then transpose them to other keys. I learned this particular pattern many decades ago, and am still finding new ways to extend it and learn more.
@fivefingerfullprice34033 жыл бұрын
_Then transpose them to other keys_ Yeah I don't think you were paying attention, this is in the key of C position. If you want to do it in other keys watch another video.
@aylbdrmadison1051 Жыл бұрын
@@fivefingerfullprice3403 C doesn't have "a position." You're a beginner and I've been teaching advanced guitar since I was just a kid in the late 70's. Don't fool yourself, because even an intermediate player knows you can play any key all over the neck. Also, this is C minor, not just C. Because when not specified, the default is always Major. These are diatonic scales (7 note scales) so in fact, they have 7 positions, not 1. You too can learn to play in any key all over the fretboard. But first you need to admit you don't know this stuff well enough to be an instructor, not even for basic students yet. You have to at least be intermediate before you can teach basic. That said, mistakes are intrinsic to learning. Never making mistakes only means we're not even trying to get better. When we refuse to admit our mistakes, it's only we who suffer from that choice, because all it does is self-stagnate our own education. Free your mind from the false idea that you already know what you do not know, only then can you start to learn what you do not know. And if you do as I suggest, you will learn some of what I already knew 40 years ago, and if you're much younger and stick with it, one day you might even know more than I do. I don't doubt your ability to be great, I doubt your ego. To be great, you'll have to get rid of that, because the ego only slows us down and causes us to be prejudiced instead of having an open mind: the only way to learn anything. Btw, the method I was trying to teach on that old comment is one of the best ways I know of to become an advanced player. But it seems you know at least some scales, so your next step anyway is to learn the other 6 positions of that C minor Key. Or do it the wiser way and first learn C Major/A minor (same notes, no sharps or flats) in all 7 positions, and say (or better yet, sing) the note names as you play them. Once you have done that, you will know every note on the guitar, and knowing those shapes you can now start playing those same shapes all starting on the same root note, and that's all seven modes. And each of the diatonic modes al have seven positions as well. I think that's 84 scales total, using just seven different shapes. Once you've learned that, then you're an intermediate player and can honestly start teaching beginners.☺ I'm rooting for you! P.S. Until then though, try not to mislead other beginners, okay?🙂

Excellent exercise to practice the picking motion!! Down-Up-Down-Up-Up while ascending and Up-Down-Up-Down-Down while descending works for me. By the way, Do you use the same fingering when you go up in the fretboard? let's say twelve fret as example, I find a little tricky to change from ring finger to middle finger in the ascending pattern (5º and 4º string), it looks like there's plenty of space at the fifth fret or so, but it gets difficult to keep that as you move to higher positions. Thanks for the lesson Robert 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👍🏻
@michaelfarkas22573 жыл бұрын
you should just do straight alternate picking no matter what. why would you do otherwise?
@jjruizsoriano3 жыл бұрын
@@michaelfarkas2257 it’s a matter of picking orientation and string attack. I use downward pickslanting and outside picking, that way the upstrokes create a scape zone, avoiding the pick to get stuck while switching between strings. I can play fast and clean with this approach. Straight alternate picking can be done, of course, but it involves others mechanics in order to combine inside and outside picking effectively which I find more complex and prefer to avoid.
