This, for me, is one of the worst crimes ive heard on this channel. Not just because of the actual crime, but because of the completely vile community. Parents telling their children to not speak, the courts victim blaming and the incompetence of the police. I cant imagine how alone and helpless the family must of felt.

Can I just say, listening to how the town reacted coldly towards the poor girl and her family, spread rumors to cover up their own guilt, how the police incompetently conducted the investigation, how the judge showed more sympathy towards the attackers, and how the media turned such a tragedy into shameless victim-blaming frenzy, all those make me lose faith in humanity. The worst part? That was only 30 years ago.

Why was Leigh's sexuality ever brought into question? Why was her mother judged as negligible, it wasn't her child that killed someone,it wasn't Leigh piling onto some kid, taunting and teasing, some of these "mothers' have daughter's,that alone should have triggered any empathy they had. The bullying of a dead child is equally abhorrent, possibly more so,since she was defenceless before and during the attack, but to have her reputation and that of her family muddied, and dirtied, why is Leigh to be forgotten so easily and Webster welcomed back into the community?

Ok, the actions of the town and especially the parents who told their kids not to say anything and to spread a story about the victim instead are deplorable and disgusting (can't say I'm suprised their sons/daughters are the kind of people to participate in or stand by and watch what happened to leigh leigh, I mean look at their parents example). But seriously harassing a KINDERGARTENER about her dead sister to the point she has to be pulled out of school is completely repulsive. Seriously WTF is wrong with these people?

I can't believe this case isn't more famous (well that might be the wrong word, I guess I mean more well known) it's truly horrific. Can't believe it happened in Aus and I'd never heard of it before. Such a shame all these old cases you can't find much info on, I'd be interested in seeing old media clips etc. This poor girl, I feel so bloody sad after listening to this. I remember being an excited teen going to your first big party, it's so heartbreaking that this happened to her on what should have been a fun night. Her stepfather was put in a mental hospital after seeing her on the beach. Then the family was harassed badly. This poor innocent beautiful girl. How these men which wore more then 10 beat her spilled beer on her and then assaulted her. It all pre planned. Why? This is one of the most horrible heartbreaking cases I have ever heard. As someone who does care, I'm truly sorry to Robin and the family for what they have had to endure since the rape and murder of Leigh Leigh. This case shows the absolute worst of human behaviour. The victim blaming is disgusting and the whole town should be absolutely ashamed of themselves, including the judge who is supposed to be about justice. Anyone who has that attitude should not be a judge. Too many people seem to find it easy to victim blame because they do not have the mental capacity to accept any culpability on the behalf of themselves or their family. That is not strength of character, that is a weakness that is despicable. To not be able to look at your own flaws and accept them is a character trait that is negative and destructive especially to other people. It's hard to not feel absolute contempt towards people who fail at every turn to protect physically a vulnerable person and to also fail the name of that person after death. They are all guilty of wrongdoing, everyone involved in whatever capacity except one person Leigh Leigh. RIP, I hope you are flying high with the angels🕊️🕊️

This poor girl to have a group of complete scumbags treat her this way. Sounds like many played a part and the parents who raised these kids and then tried to cover it up are just as bad. The comment from the girl saying they weren't kicking her as hard as they could really stands out like there's some acceptable level of head kicking. It may be rumours about the kids as young as ten being invited but that sounds like organised child rape. This horrific tale shows, once again, the miserable, cruel, pathetic, idiotic, and sociopathic tendencies of human beings. I felt so much anger towards these townspeople. I felt utter and complete disgust at the way just about everyone conducted themselves. No wonder the children behaved as they did. This sort of thing doesn't "just" happen! This sort of thing - the blatantly awful treatment of Leigh Leigh and her family - is learnt behaviour; learnt from the way their parents interacted with anyone, spoke to anyone.

What scum these people were! The comments like "we're just like teenagers in any community" and "it's not Australian to snitch on a friend" just shows they're a pack of criminals. They don't know what integrity is. The warning that "too much freedom" was not a good thing is just wrong. It's lack of values in raising children to be decent human beings.

Why are the names of all involved still being protected? Leigh's business was legitimately out in front. The name of every one of those boys and girls who participated should be out there so the world knows who they are and what they are. I can't believe no one has named these people when the whole town knew who did these terrible acts. His name to parents also. They aren't any better. I can't imagine what it would be like to live in the town so full of amoral people. I hope none of them had a good life. They are evil.

This is so distressing to hear these people are not human. That poor girl went through hell. The parents will forever feel guilty for letting her attend that party. I dont think i would have let my young 14 year old girl gone. Completely in shock at the people at the party either attacked her or watched this happening RIP leigh leigh 💔

My daughters are 14, this story really got to me. It is sickening how things were in that town. Who talks of a 14 year old girl as a slut? She wants it? How the town covered up the others involved is disgusting.

I was late to the party but these podcasts, while often being horrific, are meticulous and engrossing. It’s just a shame you keep me up all night losing sleep while i feverishly catch up. The motivations through perpetrator upbringing and desires is what pulls me into these things... I can’t relate to these people, thank goodness, so it’s endlessly fascinating how they become monsters or steadily increase their monstrosities

What did I just listen to? Utterly horrific. That poor, poor girl and her family. The inhabitants of that town displayed a breathtaking lack of humanity, just the absolute worst. I wish I hadn’t listened to this one, imagine if Leigh was your daughter. Heartbreaking doesn’t cover it. RIP Leigh, and may her family find peace.

I've only listened to the intro so far. I grew up not so far from here. But a decade later. It's important to remember that a kid having a dad then 2 different step dads was quite rare. I know my parents would make a point of it, and would be worried that the mother is a bad influence. In this era it was abnormal to have children out of wedlock, or to get divorced. And therefore people may have had a strong bias against the family to begin with. He also mentioned some non-white heritage. In a very white town. Leigh Leigh was considered an outsider before anything bad even happened. And might have been see as not deserving the same respect as a white girl from a nuclear family. Sure, it's not OK, I'm just saying that is how life was back then. We only heard whispers of the story growing up. I'm sure people wanted to protect children from imagining such horrors. We didn't know what rape was and we didn't know anyone who would do that. I think people try to distance themselves from bad things by saying "that would never happen to my child because I would ever let a 14yo go to a 16yo party". Then that gets wrapped into "oh its because she has step parents, so they must be irresponsible people." This is honestly the kind of opinions I heard growing up as a teen around 2000.

I hope that everyone complicit in her death and everyone that blamed her for her assault will never have a moment of peace till the say they die. poor Leigh, she was just a child.
