Dear Valued Case Customer,
If you have purchased or received one of our knives with "Chrome Vanadium" blades please be aware that CV is easier to re-sharpen and holds a better edge but is less resistant to rusting and discoloration. It is recommended that a thin layer of lightweight oil be put on the blades after each use. We have also found that if you put a clean blade in a raw potato or apple for about 30 minutes, the blade will permanently darken but this helps prevent rusting.
If you prefer that your blades be changed to stainless steel, and your particular knife was made with stainless steel blades, as a courtesy this one time, we will be happy to change them for you. There will be no charge as long as the blades are not worn from use or sharpening. If your knife was not produced with stainless steel blades, we will clean your blades and return the knife.

It's pronounced Vuh Nay Dee Um. It is one of the older original steels used by Case going way back. Most people who really work with their knives PREFER the Chrome Vanadium, due to the fact it holds an edge really well & sharpens very nicely. If ya keep a very light film of mineral oil ( safe, cheap & non-toxic, many collectors smear some on their hands when handling their knives ), it will keep the blade from rusting & the blade will eventually take on a "Patina" finish, that looks very vintage

i love CV. i stuck mine in a potato for about an hour and then scrubbed some of the patina off with steel wool then oiled it. that was the last time i oiled and that was about two months ago. it darkened the blade without forming bad rust.

You said that old school case knives were stainless steel. Old Case knives are made out of carbon steel and chrome vanadium is a type of carbon steel.

I put all my knives with carbon steel blades and vinegar to give it a patina finish. it keeps them from rusting. You would just have to tree that knifelike it has carbon steel. I believe that’s what they were trying to tell you.

CV is a high carbon steel. It's what every knife had before stainless steel became popular. It takes a better edge than stainless, but it is more prone to corrosion.

Yeah cv will definitely patina if exposed to food, etc. and rust if not oiled. I quite like that steel honestly.

I don't let my knives rust, but I love a blade that has a patina, and I greatly prefer CV, or any high carbon steel, to stainless. I actually use the knives I buy for hunting, trapping, and all sorts of bushcraft tasks, and stainless just does not perform as well, and won't strike sparks at all. My idea of heaven would be getting a Case Hammerhead that had a CV blade. I think Case would be surprised by how many people don't want stainless steel blades.

Is this video a joke? CV steel is usually sold at a slight premium and some Case people will not buy anything but CV, It is the best steel, in my opinion, takes a great edge and keeps it. I think if you carry it and use it you would find that CV is the best user steel you can get. If you want SS though, well that's fine too. I mean life is short and you should get what you like. I would love that little CV knife, it would be my Fav little EDC. Good luck.

Chrome Vanadium is a wonderful steel and was used used in a variety of tool applications, perhaps with the most notoriety being Ford. It's nowhere close to a stainless steel, but it will put SS to shame in its hardness, durability and strength. My everyday carry is a Case 3165 chrome vanadium (CV) hunter. I've carried it daily for a year and its superior to any folding knife I've owned over the pas 40 years. A person needs to understand CV before making broad criticisms. Yes, it will stain but once it does, the smallest amount of oil (or fat) will keep it in good shape. It will take on the same color as Ford CV tools from many years ago. The Chromium in the steel will prevent most erosion PROVIDED you give it a minimum of attention. If you are a person who does not take pride in owning a first class knife, then CV is definitely not for you.

people pay big money for knives that have similar qualities of chrome vanadium steel. as long as you don't put your knife away wet it is still a great option at a fraction of the cost of some of the new premium steels

I think the carbon steel(CV) is the original steel used by Case. It develops a patina over time, and doesn't rust if you keep it oiled. I prefer carbon steel blades on my traditional folders over stainless steel. Great Eastern Cutlery makes some excellent carbon steel traditional folders.

CV or carbon steel is far superior to stainless and until Queen Steel started using stainless it was all knives were made with. It ain't new hoss.

Chrome Vanadium steel is so much better than the crap stainless that Case uses. It shocks me that a guy your age doesn't know crap about knife steel yet post a video about one of the oldest and best steels 1095/CV like it is something new. All the "old style" Case knives were chrome vanadium. The crap stainless is the "newer steel". One thing this video did inspire me to do is start a youtube channel to hopefully cancel out misinformed, ignorant, and flat out incorrect videos like this one.

I use to sell Case and other quality knives as well as firearms, fishing gear, ect. in my late teens/late 80's at a good ole store that does'nt exist now but you may remember..."Brendle's". We could hardly keep the knives on the shelves or in stock then and the "Vanadium" problem did'nt exist...people who really used them for everything came back time and again because they did'nt fail period. Ahh,the good ole day's are gone...lol.
