Still useful today (2024)! I have an old retro computer and instead of modding a fan to the 3Dfx graphics card, I'll mod the case with a 120mm white fan with wire fan guard directly blowing air into the graphics card and all the other components 🙂

Would this same technique work with a glass panel or a plastic side panel on the case? I am not sure if mine is glass or plastic. I think its plastic but its thick n heavy almost like a light glass. Would it shatter or will it work just the same as in the video

Would this method also apply to perspex? I'm looking at possibly doing a custom side window job to my Antec 1200 (Similar to Tjharlow's work), however I at the same time want to postion a 120mm fan to run over and cool the GFX card(s). Can't currently use the side fan in the 1200 because of TRUE120 black prevent me from doing so.

Airflow question: Are side fans really necessary? I removed mine because it was making a low yet annoying noise due to vibration (it didnt disappear even with rubber grommets), I record acoustic instruments so that was a real problem. I put it as a bottom fan instead and now I am thinking of making a side window (to cover the side holes and also because it looks cool). Should I add a side fan in the window? or is it better to add top exhaust and be fine with the bottom and front intake? Thanks
@MooTaters15 жыл бұрын
Nice but you had to have taken off the 90mm fan holder to screw it on being it's right in the way. Unless that was something you have to attach which I could have sworn it was already installed up there fan and everything when you get the case.
@MooTaters15 жыл бұрын
Man I just wish when thermaltake first built the armor case that they just made a 120mm fan on top for exhaust. That or they didn't put that cruddy top plastic thing on it that terribly blocks airflow and put something else that looked just as nice.

Bill, I'm curious as to how much those Hole saw attachments are in the US, i haven't had any luck finding them on the net (To buy in Australia) How much were your *set* in the US? When i priced them here at our local hardware store they were around $120 AUD.

Just a few extra tips: Use oil to lubricate the circular saw, dont let the saw cut all the way through in one go, but rather stop when the cut is halfway the plate (specially when the plate is thicker ) and finish the hole from the other side. This way you avoid a nasty burr. I missed the pasrt where you show/tell what direction you fan will blow to, before you screwed it on. :) For the rest, love the vids, keep m up.
@Strife22116 жыл бұрын
Frenk Janse no. It's not a circular saw. And with those temps any oil can burn. Use water.

Great video. Very informative. What advice would you give for trying to create a fan slot for an acrylic window? I recently did a window mod on my Corsair Carbide 500R. I wasn't happy with the mesh which obscured all the goodness inside, but now I'm wondering if I should put at least 1-2 fan slots back into the side, but if I could do so while maintaining the window that would be great. The original panel's side was a mesh so you couldn't see into the computer regardless of fans being present or not.

There's a much easier way to fit grommets in holes. Just squeeze the sides together like a very long oval shape. The channel will open up and an end can be easily pushed into the the cut-out. You should be able to get 50% in place before needing the screwdriver to ease the rest in. It might not sound much, but when you have a lot to do, it really speeds things up and is the recommended method to reduce possible damage to the grommet from the screwdriver, especially on very small, thick ones.

Great tutorial. I recommend drilling the fan mounting holes *after* drilling the fan hole and not before. The reason for this you can see in your video. It's pretty common to have some drift when cutting the fan hole, which you had, but this can be corrected if you wait to punch your pilots for your fan mounting holes preventing your fan grille from being slightly off center from the hole itself like yours ended up being.
