In part 2, we get the engine ready to take to Shacklett's Machine in Downtown Nashville, where they will clean all the rust and scale out of the block and head, check everything for cracks, and let me know what we need to do to get this thing back to like new again. But before we do that, we have to extract a broken bolt, and a long stud that's stuck tight, as well as extract the four cylinder sleeves using a homemade tool, so watch and enjoy!

Did those bolt extractions for many years. I always heated the bolt itself red hot keeping the heat away from the casting. You then let the bolts cool down completely. What happens is the bolt expands when heated and then shrink down after cooling. They come out like butter. When you have a broken off stud or bolt you just weld a heavy washer to the stud and weld a nut to the washer. After it cools down it comes out like the heated bolts. I would never heat a large casting without heating the whole casting. When you heat in the middle of a casting you are in danger creating cracking because the cast iron tries to expand but can't and thereby it cracks. Seen it happen.

Absolutely! That would suck having to replace an engine block! The method I learned when I worked up north was to heat the bolt, then hit the bolt with a damp rag (wearing gloves of course) making sure no water gets on the casting. The sudden cooling of the bolt breaks it loose as it cools down. Dimilar process, just speeds up the process a bit.

Hy, Just tearing down the same engine and found your video. did the shop work on the block deck at all? There are raised rings machined coming out of the deck which sit outside of the liner flanges..does that mean the deck cant be resurfaced? I've similar corrosion on the deck that you had which I'd like to remove if poss..appreciate any help

Been hard to find time to work on it. I was finally able to get it back together a couple of months ago. Couldn't film it though. Filming takes 10x longer and I had to get the tractor finished so I could make room in the shop. I did take pics along the way though. I'll try and put to gether a slide show and post it. It runs great, Can't wait to get the side mower finished. I have to save up for a hydraulic motor to go on the mower deck. But I can hook a regular 3 point bush hog up to it and get some use out of it in the mean time.
