For this reason this was a very hard watch. You cant teach his creativity nor can he explain it. Its natural to him and thats why no one has managed to come even close to his vlogs. He is a 1 of 1. Some things he can say like known things about positioning the camera, framing etc. but the rest is his uniqe experience and milions of hours spent filming and editing that cant and will not ever be replicated.

Casey's process is like doing improv with himself. To record, or edit, one moment, and just move straight to the next moment, trusting the process to take you to the realization of the idea you have in your head. It inspires me to ignore the inner critic, to not let overthinking get in the way of doing.
@PaulaHeartland Жыл бұрын

@Zeddd7 Жыл бұрын
I agree, I feel that to an extent Casey is letting the inner critic be, but not giving into it. There needs to be some sort of critical "this is the way to do this," but the way to do it is to just let things flow naturally. In my eyes, it's the inner and outer struggles that bring life to his video. They create a story arc, which he packages so playfully into well executed, intriguing videos.

I think Casey nailed it when he said 'it's pure intuition'. So often we want people to tell us the how and the why but sometimes there isn't a rule or a plan or to it, it just feels right. This is where creative talent comes in and the blurred lines between understanding what works and why to a degree but not being formulaic, sometimes you just need to feel your way through a creative process.
@thatjuanguy5 Жыл бұрын

One of my favorite lines from Casey: “So my goal is to have you never notice the cuts….when I'm editing, it's like, if you notice the cut, it's a failure on the part of the editor, and the cinematographer.” Excellent, educational video. Thankful that you made this. Awesome!

This video is incredible. It shows that Casey wasn't eager on the interview and was trying to skim off things at the start but your digging deeper into his psyche helped reveal a lot of what goes behind the scenes. It's highly relatable because as people who made a conscious decision to make films and learn about the process are mostly insecure about whether they have what it takes. Hence, the pursuit to find what drives creative people to do what they do starts. This is an exceptional class in intuitive film making and as he says, it comes with years and years of experience - there's no secret sauce, only pure intuition refined over time Great video, you've earned a subscriber!

@Yodd Жыл бұрын
It does slow your process down and more importantly it has a lot of potential for unnecessary work. Sometimes it is better for the overal endproduct to leave some things out. If you edit those things and do color and text only to realize that it doesnt work for the story, you waste time. Also it is always faster to batch things together. If you do text you can open a workspace that allows you to text efficiently, for color the same thing. The more you switch the more time you lose. With that being said, you should do whatever gives you the best end result and most enjoyable experience while editing.

I have seen countless people trying to capture Casey's "secret sauce" and they always boiled it down to black and white rigid steps (probably how AI functions). But by doing that you really miss the "secret" of the sauce. But YOUR video is amazing, because it shows how much of what Casey does, capturing and telling a great story, has become intuitive to his thinking. And the fact that he does not calculate everything, proof of how doing the work and practicing the craft, allows it to come out of him in such a natural and entertaining way. Great video and a masterclass on the difference between learning a craft and just trying to imitate one.

Sincerity + Honesty + Creative Flow + Familiarity With Tools + The Joy of Persistence = Casey’s Success. I can’t do that in video, but after 20 years of photography, everything he describes in his process is exactly what I do. The only time I stop to understand what I do is when someone stops me to ask me about my work and then a ridiculous amount of information I didn’t know that I knew comes pouring out. That only comes from time, persistence & the joy of creation. Everyone can do it, but not everyone does. Most people want to get to the reward without putting in the time and effort. One immutable truth is this: there are no shortcuts. Also, fame is not a metric of success. The only metric is this: Are you able to make a living that sustains your process. ~

It all goes back to the 4 stages of learning: 1. unconscious incompetence (you don't know how much you don't know) 2. conscious incompetence (you know how much you don't know) 3. conscious competence (you know, but you have to think about it) 4. unconscious incompetence (you know, without thinking about it) Casey is at stage 4, Jack is at stage 2/3. The fastest way for a student to get to stage 4 without having to go through stages 1 to 3 is to give up trying to understand why, and just mimic every action the master does. Eventually, you'll get so good at mimicking that you'll start to intuitively predict the actions of the master. At that point, you'll have reached stage 4. Trying to break down art into a science is too time consuming and inefficient. I find it's much easier and quicker to learn by feel.

Fantastic interview! There is a way of telling "how" you do something, and a way of "showing" the viewer how's it done, and you've accomplished that. Agree with Casey on so many things. For instance, locking down a shot may be boring for viewers with a short attention span, but it's critical. I remember the Bourne series switching from Liman to Greengrass. Both are great storytellers, but Paul can't lock down a shot for the love of God. It's difficult to watch in a theater. Something I learned while constantly talking to writers about story when I worked for the Writer's Guild, was that yes, story is #1, but #2 is overlooked quite often as an afterthought. Number 2 is music/score. It's so important and most don't know how to use it to tell the story. Casey constantly nails it. Thanks again for this interview.

I'm only 11 minutes into the video, and this has already helped me immensely. You ask great questions at the exact right moment to help dig into people's heads and ideas. Looking forward to learning more!

As a Director of Photography, Casey Neistat's editing style hits the mark. His chronological approach feels like a bagel, raw and deliciously real. No pre-planned narrative here-just like a good game of dreidel, it's full of surprises. I admire Casey's chutzpah, trusting his gut and not sweating what viewers might think. His use of music isn't just a backdrop; it's a guiding force, leading viewers through the story's ups and downs. In short, his instinctive and musical editing keeps viewers hooked. His work is a real catch in today's storytelling world.
