I am so thankful I watched this tonight. It’s the start of a renewed era for me. As Mr Stilwell was chopping down the fence, my heart felt the brokenness of 2very close families. This brought me to my present circumstances & I balled like a baby. He heals my brokenness. Thank you Lord for tearing down my ‘walls’ I used to be real humbled but I allowed my heart to become callused. Forgive me Jesus! I need you. I can’t live another day with my pushing you away. I wish parents were required to teach their children how to swim as soon as possible. I'm 63 and when I was young the public pools gave swimming lessons for free. Many people can't afford lessons, therefore they fail through the cracks and are in more danger for drowning. Prayers for anyone that looses child at any age.

I don't know if I saw a pirate version, but I remember my father renting this movie on VHS when it arrived at the videoclub, in the early 90s. He was so moved by its heartbreaking story and deeply human message that he rented it again some time later. There are certain films that mark you from childhood... and this was one of them. Although I was a teenager by then, I remember crying like a child. Today I just watched it again, after 30 years: I couldn't help crying with emotion, as I did then, knowing that my father is no longer alive... but reliving, somehow, those moments we shared together as a family. Sad, but beautiful and solemn movie! 🥲

I’m so sorry, Susan. Nobody should have to experience that kind of loss and pain. I’m sure people mean no harm when they say stuff like that, but I completely understand if it rubbed you the wrong way. People seem to think they have to say certain things in the aftermath of tragedy, and they end up spewing platitudes that do more harm than good. There’s no easy solution for the trials you’ve experienced. You just need to go through it the best you can. Please know: my heart is with you.

The pool should have been covered when not in use, but I agree, in this story it still is primarily the sister’s fault. Since she’s meant to be a minor I assume, it therefore goes back to it being her - and Casey’s - parents’ fault.

This was such a great movie and I don't understand how people build pools knowing kids around who cant swim without covering it. Casey is so intelligent and inquisitive so sad what happened. The neglect the young daughter received was so sad. Let's be honest it was Kathy's fault she was suppose to be watching him point blank and she was annoyed by him and told him to get lost and go sail the boat which he thought she was giving him permission. The daddy blamed the neighbors cause he felt guilty he neglected his son and was jealous of the bond his son had with Hank.I'm really glad how it ended

The tragedy probably would not have happened had she been home in the first place; as the mother pointed out herself. Parents are responsible for their children, not the neighbors. Grownups are the ones to watch kids. Their dog digged the hole so they should have fixed the hole themselves. His dog, his son, but accident is an accident.

Everybody is getting upset and not realizing that the little boy has the greatest loss of all. The little boy lost his entire life and future !!! Gone from this world

Not the greatest loss for him, he is in Heaven, the best place in the safe loving arms of Jesus. Like my nephew Joshua who passed at 6yrs old, I believe he is in the best place with Jesus where we all want to be one day even though we miss him dearly.

Excellent movie. I teared up more than once. However, this movie didn't address an underlying issue. Hank was terrible to his daughters, especially to his youngest, who really wanted her dad's attention and time. Hank just wanted a son and paid more attention to him than his own kids. Pete, Casey's dad, was so jealous of his son's relationship with his best friend, yet he could have done all those things with his son, like fishing and playing ball. Still, the cast was superb. Thank you for posting.

So happy they made it through and cane back together.

It was a accident. I'm sure sure Casey was told like any other child not to play around the pool without adult supervision

I hate that saying,...'in a better place'. How could the boy be in a better place? A better place would be at home with his family!!! They should have hidden the fact that they used a dummy in some of the scenes. No way the kid with that boat could fit through that cap under the fence. The father was in so much pain and the grief was so overwhelming he just needed someone to blame. Blame is part of the grieving process along with anger.

This theme reminds me of the pact where one family loses a daughter and the other family son is accused of her murder. Both families were so close before this happened.

Where I live the pool must be well lock and secure where a child cannot reach it. Still a sad story. Was a lifeguard in the pass and love teaching swimming and water safety. Get off your phone and watch your child.

Hate when people say there in a better place say nothing bc no words

Death is biblically misunderstood by most maybe. The Resurrection will be better for many and then a better place.

I'm a Christian and it's just the dumbest thing to say to people in the time that they're in. Very foolish to say something like that to a grieving person.

I totally agree . I lost my 20 year old son Chance ,12 years ago… and I know people mean well when they say “just think of it this way …he’s in a better place “… but it hurt my heart each time I heard it … (I’ve kept journals since my son passed )…and I’ve written in them about this a few times …but I would feel so angry when someone says that . Because I wanted to yell out loud that “the best place for him to be is with me ! With his mother ! “Still in the bedroom down the hallway …fact is in my opinion there is no really right thing to say . The ones that just gave me a sincere look and a quick “I’m sorry “ with a hand shake or hug was enough . My sons best friend died in a car accident 2 months before my son passed… I looked up as I sat on a stool beside my sons casket and saw her walking up to me …the look in her eyes spoke volumes because unfortunately she had been thru it …Her son and mine has graduated high school together a year prior and her son had a 7 week old son when he died. She’s raising him now. Life seems so unfair . My younger son adored his big brother . He’s 28 now. A Firefighter/EMT. I think he chose that to help save people . He gave us 2 grandbabies . His first son is now 3 years old … his name Is …Chance (named him after his brother )… and he has a 20 month old daughter too! Anyway I didn’t mean to ramble on… I really just wanted to say I agree with that “oh they are in a better place” ( Heaven is a better place … it’s just not the best thing to say to a grieving mother. And some might not understand that if you haven’t lost a child and I get that . I wouldn’t have know either . )

As a kid I heard what happened up at our neighbours place( we grew up on almost six acres), and there was a dam on our neighbours property. Dad was in our paddock and heard screams, he and the neighbour came running and they got there too late; a little girl had gotten tangled in the reeds, and by the time they reached her, she had drowned. ( the parents ended up breaking up over that terrible tragedy!!!! Apparently another child also drowned in that dam!!!! We used to swim in our own dam, luckily we were all ok…………. I think of my poor dad and the girls dad how absolutely horrific that must of been for them.
