Phase 2 of the Western Star is done! Tim at High Mountain Diesel Repair built me a VERY custom dual pump PTO system for the ‪@SeriousTrucks‬ and got it done in time for its surgery appointment that's coming up Monday morning. After that it will be a completely different truck and the whole plan I've put together with that extra long truck, the very specific trailer I bought, and the final piece, will all come together to complete the puzzle and explain why I did things the way I did. After that, the only major change I want to make to that truck is the addition of the ‪@onspotnorthamerica22‬ Automatic Tire Chains. Those are easily the most useful and practical modification I've ever done to the rollback, and I don't ever want to have another truck without them.
Now speaking of the rollback... We know what the problem is, and now we just have to figure out why it's doing it. To say that the dealership it was at is an absolute joke would be the understatement of the year, and their complete incompetence cost me the sale of that truck. I finally went and just took the truck back from them and will deal with it myself, but unfortunately I haven't had time to even mess with it since then so it's still just sitting.

Sparks got rich off TV money and D-bag kids with smoke belching mall crawlers ordering crap from them. Generally I HATE the EPA for all their BS they’ve done to Diesel engines and the way they put the screws to decent, hard working people but I have to admit I wasn’t upset at all when they slapped a 7 figure fine on the Diesel Butt-bro’s a few years back.

If you have someone that can hook cummins insite to the truck and run the EGR turbo test you can find out the health of the system very quickly. No idea why a dealership would “take it apart” I have about 30 of those engines in my fleet. They either work or they don’t. That VGT has mechanical arm and cannot be reinstalled wrong like on an ISX. What I have seen more than once on a loss of power issue like yours where it doesn’t engage under a load is the differential pressure sensor tubes on the intake are restricted or plugged giving the air pressure an incorrect reading for the requested vein position and fuel. They are the two hard line tubes that come off the EGR cooler and go up the pressure senor just next the Venturi on the intake. Take them off (11mm) blast them out with compressed air and brake clean and slap the ‘em back on, free 15 minute fix.

Damn Casey , 50-4 sure has been a huge pain in your butt. I am glad that you're on the right track now with the trucks running issues. It does sound like either a ECU that is not functioning properly or maybe a input sensor that is no longer working. Wishing you all the best with getting that straightened out!

Good to know that there isn't serious mechanical damage to the engine. But what a bummer when control systems peter out that take a rig out of service, especially when so many mechanics don't really understand the newer systems but won't let you know, and just play stink-finger the whole while.

Best arguement for a headboard is to put lights on - tail, brake, turn etc can all be mounted behind the sleeper compartment on the headboard - gives best visibility to other drivers too - just reversing, clearance and work lights at the back plus reflectors

Your tribulations with the rollback are, unfortunately, becoming the norm in the industry. Finding people who are mechanics rather than parts changers, and shops that will be honest with you even if they are at fault, is becoming increasingly hard. Troubleshooting seems to be a disappearing art. You have handled the frustration on camera much better than I could. Arrogant ineptness gets under my skin very fast. Thanks for another good and entertaining video.

First, finally. Fantastic to get a walk through of the new truck, sounds like there was more than a little thought expended on that project, after this and the walkthrough of your old custom trailer (thought you were going to buy that back) people are going to accuse you of being good at that. Thought I had missed a video about the new truck but you covered phase 1 being finding and buying it. Good to see progress on the rollback too, shocked to hear you had it sold but can you imagine it going wrong a day or two after the money had changed hands. Good luck with both projects and cant wait to see it finished

A good argument for a headboard would be the sleeper cab isn't going to be made of anything too strong, and having a load break loose and come forward isn't something you want to think about. I realise you don't usually transport the sort of load that can do that but there's a first time for everything.

I had a truck with that same Cummins engine. Had a problem with it thinking it had high exhaust temperature. I had 2 different shops try to figure it out. I tried to figure it out. Finally after months of problems. I was able to get the top Cummins diagnostics guy in California from Cummins come look at the truck. He scratched his head for about 6hours. Saying exactly what everyone said. Nothing makes sense. He asked if it had any recent updates flashed. Yes the one shop did. I showed him the receipt from that shop. Well he checked it. And come to find out that engine had no updates flashed since it was built in the factory 10 years earlier. He flashed all the needed updates into the ECM. Bingo no more problems with that engine. Not saying that is the fox for yours. But something you should check it could help

Tim did a great job on that install. I'm guessing you may have a date with someone named ZACH. I was hoping you were also putting a pusher, onspot chains, and a herd bumper . To make this best of all worlds.

Looking forward to phase 3 and seeing your plans for that truck. To bad you had that happen with the rollback and lost the sale. I believe things happen for a reason. Hope you have time to work on it soon and get it working correctly again.

Casey, does the turbo issue come on when the exhaust temps climb? The variable nozzle turbo’s can function fine when cold but when they get hot they can stick especially if the nozzle ring in the exhaust housing has cracks in it and or the vanes have dings in them. If you had an injector tip problem it may have done damage to the vanes or ring. One way to check would be to get it hot and then use a blow gun with shop air to see if the actuator moves the arm full travel. Wouldn’t trust that the repair shop says the turbo is fine until you verify it

I always figured that you would be putting a big winch behind that cab but now I am really curious. A crane of some kind to go with the winch.

I'm guessing a crane lift. It's just about like the ones we used in the military. I'm hoping. That would be amazing.

Rear redesign must mean a heavy duty wheel lift is coming so you can do tow jobs without bringing along the trailer, deck redesign means a winch/boom system of some sort. Then, the only other truck you'll ever need will be a 50 or 75 ton rotator and you'll be Pepe of the North! lol

Custom sleeper tow truck with regular 5th wheel capabilities so you can recover, pull back to the trailer and hual it off all in one go.

I am willing to bet that a sensor just didn't get plugged in all the way and the ECU doesn't know to control the turbo. I still don't hate International any less, I drive one daily that I have had since new and it is literally falling apart. Mine (company truck) spent 4 months in the shop because the TCU forgot how to use the even numbered gears, and in hindsight I should have left it broken because it pulled better that way. Yep, it has the big 15 liter Cummins that can't maintain its speed on I-5 from Portland to SeaTac hauling sailboat fuel.
