This truck was hauling a skid steer down an icy driveway when the trailer started to push it sideways. Luckily he kept it together enough to aim the truck for the ditch, but then as the tail end spun around the trailer and skid steer went over the edge. I’m amazed it didn’t roll over, and luckily he’s one of the very few people who actually chain a machine down in a dump trailer or it would have tumbled to the bottom.
There was no hope of doing this job from the bottom, as none of the trees above it were strong enough to snatch block off of. So I got a little wild with the @NRCIndustries 40TB rollback on a dirt road up the back side of the mountain so that I could come down from above. After that it was a bunch of small winching and repositioning movements until we got everything on the road, and then we used my truck as an anchor to lower them down to the bottom so that it wouldn’t start sliding again.
I also have to say a huge thank you to Art Davis of Davis Towing and Tire in Sisters Oregon for my Christmas gift of an 8 ton snatch block, because it definitely came in handy today! If you ever need any towing services or tires in the Sisters/Santiam Pass area, Art and Kathleen are awesome people that are definitely deserving of your business!

That was just amazing. Using the equipment available and being smart enough to take small bites instead of trying to do everything at once. You may have never said you were good at this, but the video proves otherwise. To my untrained eye, that was a masterful job.

Holy moly, what an amazing recovery!!!!! You had me holding my breath several times throughout this vid. You're right, the rollback was probably not the ideal recovery vehicle for that job (understatement of the year, LOL). And then with Alex backing your rig down the hill while you commented "I don't know if he can drive a truck or not, but what could go wrong" had me 😅😅😅😅 Definitely a sketchy recovery but my confidence level was a solid 9.99 from the start. Thanks for a very entertaining vid!!!!

It’s not wrong if you know your equipment well enough to know how to make it do what you want it to, regardless of it’s intended purpose. It’s ingenious, and experience. Poor Alex that snow really had it out for you today. I think the scariest part of this video was watching the rig slide backwards down that hill with only the front wheels turning.

Your last sentence, why do you think it was scary? Both vehicles were chained together and by having the brakes applied on the wrecker, that enabled the pickup/trailer to stay straight and also gave the pickup more braking power just in case the pickup were to slide on any slick spots. Furthermore, another reason the brakes were applied on the wrecker was to prevent any slack on the chain, so the wrecker wouldn't hit the trailer.

I have no idea what order videos come out in, however I look forward to Grumpy getting well and coming back out. Alex seems like a nice enough bloke but Grumpy does a thing that makes the video's much better. He asks lot of questions mainly about what is about to happen and why. This forces Casey to explain himself and helps the audience follow along. Casey is getting better at explaining himself without prompting and I'm sure Alex can pick up on this, however Grumpy is the master! I enjoy the videos I'll call it an attempt at constructive criticism (I never said I was good at it!).

Very impressive recovery, Casey! You might have not had the ideal equipment for the job, but your knowledge of the equipment you had available (and physics) made it a success. I think this might be the best one I've seen you do so far, and I've been watching since the early days of the channel. And kudos to Alex for getting it all on camera, despite his apparent traction/balance issues, lol.

I know she always say super long video I don't think you realize that we subscribers as enjoy your videos we also enjoy the longer ones because it gives us longer and more time to watch exactly how you do things and what you're doing You're making me thinking of quitting my union roofing job and going back to towing cuz it is not only good money if you do it the right way they're legal way it's fun so we appreciate the longer videos although the short videos are cool because you get them done quick but if it takes longer we still enjoy them just as much

You are one hell of a driver. Backwards hooked to them on ice with a big drop off. My hats off to you! The great part was you got it on video and as the saying goes "if it's not on video, it didn't happen! " Lol

If the pickup isnt broken, so you are just trying to get it unstuck, the best thing would be to bring a tracked skid steer like a T300 up there. It would pull that rig out without much fuss. I know because I just unstuck my truck and loaded trailer with one. Quick and easy.

Question for Casey - when you hooked to the skidsteer with the cable, you were keeping your head below the deck while pulling? Part safety, part watching lower down? We know what would happen if that cable broke and you head was above the deck. No bueno.

Good job. I got nervous when you let someone else in the cab. I never had a roll back that large. We did carry an army wrecker with articulating boom on a low boy for a couple of rescues. Had to move some train cars off the tracks. We found some steel tracks that would go over the rear duals that helped on icy roads some. We did go to super singles and that was a mistake for could not get traction on ice. The duals with spiked chains did the best. Even better on ice than the tracks. I built some hyd spikes for each outrigger so we could dig in. When we bought it at auction it was pretty rigged up. Had air lock diffs in the rear and front so we ended up using spiked chains on every wheel so we could stop if started to slide. It had extra levers in the cab so could raise and lower outriggers from inside if we needed to move the truck. I liked being able to stab them in the ground with the spiked add ons if we needed to. Great recovery and keep the videos coming.
