They were lost and stranded in the mountains.

I got called by some people who got lost in the woods and ended up stranded after they got stuck in a creek crossings. With no phone service in the area, they decided to hike out and luckily were found walking down the road a few miles away where they were given a ride into town. With no way to get back out there, the car was left for a few days before we were called to see if we could get it out and bring it out closer to the highway where they would be able to get a ride to it later. So I loaded up Grumpy and we took the 4x4 wrecker out to do a little winching, a little rigging, and some super low speed towing to get it out to a staging area near the highway. Seeing as it also had a flat tire, I wouldn’t be surprised if that have me just go back and tow it all the way to town instead.

Hard for me to emphasize enough how important it is to stay with the car. i just did a vehicle recovery where two people died, their jeep still had a lot of fuel, all they had to do was sit tight and cuddle up but they apparently decided to walk out, cops say the hypothermia must have kicked in soon because they made a wrong turn 1/4 mile away from their jeep. just tragic

Yup, as a former search & rescue person, I totally agree. That said, if no one knows where you are going and you have no cell service, it's a difficult call. That's why I always tell people if you are going places with no cell service and only one vehicle, take a Spot or similar emergency beacon.

Nonsense. You make the decision to stay with the car on a case by case basis. If you don't have a signal and you don't have anyone looking for you, you could easily starve to death waiting for help that never comes. If you wait for help that never comes by the time you decide you may need to walk out, you likley won't have the energy or brain power to be successful. These people were stupid enough to drive a camry out there, leave a car with a flat tire locked and blocking the road, put card board under the rear tires on a fwd car after their magic wand didn't work, and still managed to find their way to safety. Obviously, waiting with the car was NOT the right decision in this case.
