"Always do something you don't like doing, because you'll focus on what you really want to" That's some of the best advice I've ever heard.

Instead of giving away a physical object, you should give away an opportunity. A competition - short film - subject created by you, then you can promote the movies of all the finalist, and produce a micro budget short for the winner. Use some of your influence and audience to move someone in your audience one step forward.

I dropped out of college 4 years ago and my life has drastically improved because I kept working on myself. Society will tell you you need college. Question them. Question me. Question yourself. College exists as a tool to help get you to where you want to be. Step one is learning where you want to be. I advise not going thousands or 10's of thousands of dollars into debt before knowing what it is you want to do. Too many of my friends have been graduating with degrees they didn't even care about and now have tons of debt, all because they didn't want to let down their family. They're really stressed out now. Ideally, your family should love and support you anyway. They should want you to be happy for how you define happiness, not them. I was given the gift of a wonderful mom, who supported me through everything. She was the only family member who fully had my back when I dropped out. But not everyone has that. The choice at that point is to either become stronger within, and do it anyway, or give in to the pressures and live how others want you to live. She knew I had to go my own path, and figure things out my own way, learn from my own decisions. I ended up going on a lot of adventures. One was a 3 week hitch hiking trip. I learned a lot about myself through these adventures. If you already know what you want, then go *directly* after it. If you truly feel that music is what you want, go directly after it and only go to college if you have a clear reason why you need to in order to succeed in your field. Quick example: If there is a company you want to work for, call them directly and tell them you want to work for them. Ask them if they have any requirements to get the job. If they say a college degree is required, ask if there is any other way you could prove you have what it takes to do the job. Some places will give "tests" of different kinds, and if you pass, you're in, regardless of holding a degree. Business owners are just regular people like you and I. They often require degrees simply because they can streamline this requirement - testing every applicant would take too much time and time is money. But if you ask them for other ways to get the job without a degree you may find a way. Even if they say no, if you can come up with something creative to demonstrate your skills in the field, then show it to them, if they like it there's a decent chance you'll get in without a degree because you showed a lot of initiative and most business owners appreciate that. If that doesn't work, you can be honest with them and say "So I really want to work for your company. I understand I have to attend college. Is there anyway you could help me pay for college? It'll be worth it to you in the end. I will be an amazing worker. I clearly really want this job or I wouldn't be trying so hard right now." But if there is no way around it and you need a degree, then, and only then, should you spend thousands of dollars and hundreds of hours of your time getting one. Or perhaps you want to start your own business instead. Pursue it directly, if possible. If music really is what you want, make it your life. Learn everything you can about it. There is an enormous amount of free training online. KZbin and the internet at large have been my "teachers" the past 4 years. And I have learned way more than I ever did in traditional school settings. We all learn differently. If you don't know what you want yet, I think it's best you take time off from college. As long as you need. I advise against limiting yourself to only one semester off. This decision is too important to force anything to happen. When you think about it, the real question here is "should I spend thousands of dollars on this thing?" If you were about to buy a house you wouldn't just jump into it, right? You would research houses. And you'd think about what you really want out of a house. It is the same for careers. Dropping this much money is easier when you don't have it in your bank account. Try pretending you have $50,000 in your bank. Now let's say, if you go to college you *have* to use that money. This will help you feel a little more attached to the money and want to use it carefully. Learn about yourself for as long as you need. Then when you know what you want, go after it directly, and if college is an absolute un-avoidable requirement, then go do it. I am not against college. I am against people choosing to attend college who don't need to, getting in debt, and then not even using their degree. Question your friends and family. Question your elders. Question me. Question yourself. Find the things you're truly passionate about! Only go to college if it's unavoidable! Don't let anyone tell you how to live your life! Seek those who will support you no matter what! Good luck!

Thank you so much for your advice Casey! Please allow me to say this small advice to the people out there... ❤️I am 28 years old now... I went to college and after that I studied computer engineering and then did my masters degree and all that took me around 6 years... It was never what I WANNA DO or WHAT I LOVE TO DO... But I come from a country where the society and most of the people there think that you're a failure if you don't go to university or graduate as an engineer or a doctor! After all these years that I wasted, and even after working in the field for a few years, I couldn't stand my life anymore and I hated it for MY ONLY DREAM & PASSION has always been to become a musician/producer cuz I feel the need to share my music with the whole world... But back in my country, I couldn't find the support needed... So I decided to quit everything and this whole routine and I just became a flight attendant... Now even though I'm not so young anymore, I have more time with this new job to finally work on my passion... I still wanna be hopeful and I believe that I can still achieve my dream... It's never too late... But at least, PLEASE DO NOT DO THE SAME MISTAKE. In other words, if you have a dream that you wanna achieve, start working on it RIGHT NOW :)

Good insight Casey! I left university on my first week and decided to start a company simply because I found the lecturer not at all educational to me personally. I became a CEO at age 21 and now I'm 24, starting a second company. I would say from experience, always find something to study that you will NEED! I tell all my staff that I don't have an educational background and not one person treats me like an idiot. I think because motivating a group of people can not be taught at school anyway.

I love how you said to "dig ditches". I came from a family of 8 kids. My dad had a red pick up truck, put my brothers in the back and dropped off several of my them to "dig ditches" at a tree farm to teach them how difficult things can be. If they didn't like it..it was up to them to make changes and do what they wanted to better themselves (whatever that might be). It was the best lesson he gave my brothers...they are all doing very well today....not all went to college just to be clear :) Excellent video!

Finally some great advice for kids that are blindly walking into college. The day and age of being able to get a job right away from that piece of paper obtained upon completion of college is over. Worst of all, people walking into a degree blind get a job they hate later on. Truly the worst scam of all time.

I discovered your channel a few months ago and I realized every single time I achieved something I'm super proud of in my life, it was by following the advice you're giving before I even knew about your existence.. so it really actually works!!! The "do what you can't" advice, the "take a shitty job that will help you fixate on your goal" tip... All of that. I'm not a creator or an innovator or an entrepreneur, but it totally applies in other scenarios too. I chose to follow the boring university-> internship -> steady job in IT path and this mentality helped me 1. make this boring path exciting and have amazing experiences in foreign countries and 2. helped me push through hard times and finish what I started instead of quitting a bunch of times.

Either way, if you mess up and pick the 'wrong' choice (for you), you can always change your mind, rework your life/plan, and start over. That's what I'm doing at 45 years old. It's possible. Just figure out what you love and start doing that. Figure out what you do when nobody (or guilt) is telling you what you should be doing.

I'm 24 and its good to know I'm not the only mid 20's person that hasn't figured it out. Everytime I'm asked why I quit a job or ended a relationship to find a new one I just shrug my shoulders lol.
@frederic69988 жыл бұрын
+Ryan Ferrier same for me, never really knew what i wanted to do, from France i had some "great" job offers (at least what most peoples think is a great stable job) but never accepted any (allways prefered the temporary contracts), then i took a plane for Vancouver Canada with a shity english at this time found a nice job after a year i got a new oportunity with Bombardier in Ontario (24$/hour, in 2010 the CAD was worth more than USD) but finally i didn't bothered making the papers to renew my Work visa and came back in France worked a bit some shity jobs then mooved to Madrid Spain were the jobless rate is at 50% for the people under 25, peoples tought i was crazy, after struggleling a bit i finally got a job and stayed there 1year1/2 (only making 1000€/month but the weather is great). Then came back in France with no serious ideas what i wanted to do next worked some jobs again, got a nice offer from an electronic company working to build the Rafale combat aircrafts once the temporary contract was over i refused the permanent contract and started investing money on internet from my bed in my parents house hoping to be able to become financialy free and be able to travel were ever i want when ever i want for as long as i want, getting asked what i was doing, telling me that i should stop being lazy and get a real job blablabla, it didn't turned as expected lost some money was really feeling stressed and getting some doubts, then things started to get better i'm now making over 25 000$/month but still have not much ideas what i want to do lol, it's kind of boring making that much money from your bed seing no one all day and not doing much interesting things that you can talk about while everyone is at work all day. Also many peoples are jealous and kind of dont like the idea of someone making that much money from his bed so often i just tell the peoples that i still do the same job as i used to do before lol. And i completly hate the burocracy part of having a business/investments. Started to run recently, maybe i'll do a marathon to keep me active. I guess i'm getting "old" now and i'm not exited about traveling as much as i used to be before, but i'm thinking about going Mexico. I'm 29 BTW. I'm not good with girls but i dont see myself being with one girl only or being in a long term relationship, that scare me a bit when i see peoples around me in the same job since almost 10years getting a loan to buy a house/apartment, having babies, my brain is so far away from all this kind of things but have no idea what i really want to do.

To shed my own light on this topic, because I asked this same question about 5 months ago, I truly felt in my heart that I did not want to go. I wanted to follow a dream and see where it would take me. I decided not to go to college the DAY BEFORE I was supposed to move in (I didnt have to pay before you judge me). I don't recommend waiting that long to decide but Im glad I didn't go. Im currently part of a growing production company and Im making commercials and films as the DOP, here in my home state in CT and Im happier than ever with plenty of work every week, plus I even get to travel. However, it was not a walk in the park to get here at all. I spent countless days without rest, made too many mistakes, and had way too many people saying I was an idiot and would never be anything in my life. But now looking back Im glad I pushed through. The point I am trying to make is you have to know its a risk. You also have to know that you will do everything you can, and use every amount of passion you have to get where you want to go. But especially, have a backup plan, always. If you want to take a year off, do it. But don't waste your time. Make good use of that year, and if nothing works out or even if it does you can always start school the next year. Hope this helps anyone thats in the same position as I was in.

Your answer to the perennial question, Should I go to college? is a good one. I would like to add that there's much confusion about the distinction between vocational colleges, which teach almost exclusively for a trade, and universities, which _sometimes_ teach a trade or profession, but that more generally provide a well-rounded liberal arts education, which helps the graduate understand the world, history, the humanities, nature, and humanities place in it. That of course is the water of college, and not all students drink it (they're probably drinking beer instead). Not everyone needs or wants these insights, but, as someone who finished his B.A. relatively late in life, I found that I made a great leap forward in the quality of life because of the understanding given me by my education. College in America divides into three great periods: the period before WW2 when only a few elite intended (Casey's answer has strong support here because most pre-war writers, including Ernest Hemingway, had only high school educations); then, after WW2, with the GI Bill in place, nearly everyone went to college. But beginning in the 1990s, more or less, we entered a third phase in which almost anyone can go to college, but few can afford to pay back the loans. So yes, Casey's right: go if what you want to do requires it; don't go if you don't need it. But I say, if you have that burning curiosity to understand the world, why it is how it is, then you need to go.

Casey. Honestly a giveaway would be cool but. Speaking for myself. I don't need anything. I want stuff but not from you. Just having daily videos is enough for me. You are my favorite youtuber and one of my favorite people. Although you will never see this I just would love for you to know much you have impacted my outlook on life and how optimistic you have made me.
