Had the same thing happen to me while at work last year, came straight from school, left my clothes and backpack in my truck then went to work for 8 hours. They did the same thing with the door lock. Took my MacBook, beats, plus the whole year of school work that I was working on. But that only gave me an excuse to rebuild stronger and focus harder. Because of that, I was forced into upgrading my computer and grinding school harder than ever. To this day I still see that event as a positive, forced me to get out of my comfort zone and grow up. There has to be a better way to keep your stuff secured, a useful tip I learned for keeping this from happening is preventing the opportunity first. I hope this doesn’t happen to you again, also if you’re worried about camping out in your car you can use bear mace for security or look into other means of self defense. A thief will be very petty and people have died for very little in those situations.

I would disagree with your statement that someone would be in a position to “need” to do this to someone else, no matter how bad things get in life, there is never a need to take things that don’t belong to you. When this happened to me, I was dealing with it for a long time, they had all my passwords and tried to hijack all of my accounts for everything. My mistake for keeping my valuables in my car, not having a lock box, not having renter’s insurance/homeowner’s insurance, and the Sherrif’s Department was absolutely no help whatsoever even though they had people trying to cash the blank checks that they stole.
