The thing that annoys me is why the hell don't banks have a shield over the top large enough for your hand to slip into so you are able to punch in the code one finger digit at a time? I always cover mine, but once in london whilst I had been out for the night I didn't, and someone scanned my card just like this. When I was called the next day by the bank I asked them the above question, and was told "I don't know" One design feature change and it could stop this for ever.

So many places want your credit information and then dont properly protect your data theres 300 million people in this country and somethin like 2/3 of us have had our identities stolen or compromised in 1 way or another usually through no fault of our own, ie careless or insecure data collection and storage. @aollerhead118 жыл бұрын
+Luken Wong The reason the device is called a "skimmer" is because it's relatively thin (around 2 inches) and the card can be passed through the device on the way into the actual machine's card reader. The card is pushed through and the magnetic strip is swiped and fully read by the skimmer before the last few inches of the card even enter the machine, at which point the cash machine/ATM has the card and functions how it would regardless of whether the skimmer was there. When the other guy showed the more sophisticated/convincing one that looked like the entire face of the machine, it looked like the card slot wasn't opened in the back, so I doubt that one would work as is, but maybe that's why the guy in the video called it "crude"

@CallumAi9 жыл бұрын
Why on earth do cards still have the magnetic strip anyway?! I honestly can't think of one time I've actually used the strip instead of the chip, never. Surely ATMs can read both chips and strips by now? I'm pretty sure they must - I use strong magnets reasonably often so the magnetic strip on my card is likely wiped but I have no problem using ATMs so I guess they must be using the chip.
@TheWireEDM9 жыл бұрын
Callum Aitchison Good luck paying when the chip fails. The idea is that if the machine can't read the chip, then it asks to swipe the strip. If this is on a cashiers desk, then the cashier must ask for ID or all the responsibilities fall on the cashiers shoulders in case of card fraud. But if you have a chip card with a stripe and you swipe it, the machine should immediately tell you to use the chip instead. Only if the chip read then fails will it ask & accept the stripe.
@CallumAi9 жыл бұрын
Jaakko Fagerlund By still having the strip that's not a security advantage at all. You could destroy the chip if you wanted to to force everything to use the magnetic strip. Also, the chip just doesn't fail - those things are crazy reliable (although sometimes (albeit very rarely) there can be a read error which is fixed by taking the card out and putting it back in, perhaps with a little wipe if you feel like it).
@TheWireEDM9 жыл бұрын
And that is why all purchases with the strip has to be ID'd or else the cashier is responsible. The chip doesn't offer added security, it's been broken for years now.
@CallumAi9 жыл бұрын
Jaakko Fagerlund Yes, it does. Chip & PIN isn't broken to a point where it's not as good as magnetic strips, in fact it's hardly broken. As far as I remember from when magnetic strips were a thing you weren't ID'd but you signed a paper and that was compared to the signature on the back of the card. Obviously not that many people carry ID with them and unless you "look under 21/25/insert-shop-policy-here" and shops ID you for buying 18-restricted items there's no need. That's a bit of a problem if you want to buy something. To reproduce a magnetic strip is reasonably simple since all the data can be read and written with ease, reproduce that on a different card with a different signature and it's pwned. With Chip & PIN you'd have to find a vulnerability in the card's chip itself to get all the data from it without a PIN which I believe has been done before but obviously hardware in cards can be updated with each issue.
@TheWireEDM9 жыл бұрын
It has been hacked and updating such things is not easy nor cheap, as the machines would have to be updated and the cards themselves too and that costs money. When magnetic strips were the thing, shops around here had a get-out-of-jail-free card in case the shoppings were under 50 EUR and the ID was not checked, BUT, with the introduction of the chip cards, every strip transanction has to be ID'd or the seller is in trouble in case of fraud. And if you check your card use terms from your bank, it will most likely say that payments can be ID'd at any time, which naturally then means that you have to have your ID with you every time you think of making a purchase with the card. And at least here the terms also state that without ID the cashier can keep the card and return it to the bank and get a reward, that is then deducted from the card owner. And now with the VISA PayWave or wireless/contactless payment system in place there is even more chances to copy the card, without even seeing it.
@Reboothis12 жыл бұрын
People usually say "PIN number", because the word "Pin" has another meaning. Like if I asked you - Do you have any pins?
