There are a lot of fees involved with docking a houseboat you don't think of. Plus you need to winterize it. And it might be a tad cold in the winter. But cute for summer.

So I lived on a boat in college in the Seattle area, and the water is surprisingly insulating. Even when it's colder than freezing outside, the water keeps the boat a bit warmer (40 degrees or so) than you would expect. A small heater, or the stove they have, usually suffices. Of course, NYC is colder than Seattle in general. Good luck to the hardy sailors who make this a home

Yeah, so storms were not fun. I remember one in particular when I had just had my wisdom teeth out and was still groggy from the anesthesia. For the most part we would just "batten down the hatches" and call a friend to stay with when it got too rough. Our marina was pretty protected. Overall, it was a fun experience and I'd tentatively recommend it! @@653j521

Happy Labor Day Cash. That houseboat is a seafarer's haven. The second story deck is cozy yet functional. The bedroom has ample space and the quirky, tasteful deco has a true personality all its own. I like the idea of moving (or in this case) "float away" from any annoying neighbors. That's the jackpot perk right there! Great place to live, but it gets crazy 🧱 (cold) during the winter months. But since the house is properly outfitted, it probably won't be an issue staying warm. Thanks Cash 👍.

I had a good friend & his brother was an airline steward. He was based in Hawaii & lived on a houseboat in Honolulu. I always thought that was about as good as it got right there. Unfortunately, he couldn’t stop smoking weed & got fired from the airlines😞

That was AWEsome. In Victoria, BC we have 2 floating-home marinas; my brother lives on a sailboat at a 3rd marina but it gets cold because the keel is in the water. This is one of the nicest coolest pontoon houseboats I've seen. Probably nicer than my 1-bdrm apartment. ...Wait, it's only $250K to buy??

I LOVED EVERYTHING about that property except for wishing it was on a larger lot of land! LOL!!! The layout is nice, but the decor is chaotic! I visited a houseboat on Lake Union in Seattle. The boat was at the very end of a dock with a dozen other houseboats moored on it. They were really crammed together. The houseboat had low ceilings; perhaps seven feet. The kitchen had adequate counter space and a small oven. There were two bedrooms up top and a head on the lower deck. It did have a feature not found on many of houseboats. It had a washer and dryer in a cramped “basement deck!” Boat owners had to park their cars in a small lot up by the street. It was a long walk down to the pier and then a longer walk to the end of the pier to reach your house! Oh, and a California earthquake was felt by people on the Seattle houseboats! (Landers 7.5 quake woke people on the Lake Union houseboats!)

Yikes! $4200? Very cool house boat. I live on the Oregon coast and there are some people who live in a marina close by on vessels. But, in the Portland area there are lots of floating homes which are stationary unless towed elsewhere. I had thought of buying one but the docking fees get more expensive all of the time. I've always wanted to live or at least own a Houseboat, since I saw the 1958 movie of the same name, with Cary Grant & Sophia Loren (hoped that she came with it!) Then, I saw the 1960 t.v. show "Surfside Six", set on a Miami based Houseboat & that confirmed it! (In 1963, I actually went on that boat, then turned into a bar!) Unfortunately, it never turned into reality, but I'm still dreaming!

The idea is fun, but I'd love to know what the yearly upkeep is. Boats require loads of money and work to maintain, but it might be cheaper than rent overall.

The proverbial hole in the water you throw money into? The two best days in your life are when you buy the boat and when you sell it. And other well known sayings. I wonder about insurance, in case the boats are blown together or into another object. Do you have to take it out and scrape the hull? Is there a boat inspector to tell you if it is sound?

​@@653j521my parents did that in Florida! In between they were always at the dock cleaning the salt off their boat. Not my thing, but then we do rv for months at a time. Renting anything is the simplest life. Let someone else worry about the details. But then I sure do love having my own home. Rented for 20 years, got nothing to show for it except 20 years of total independence. It's a trade off for sure.
