After Die Another Day it was time for a reinvention of the James Bond franchise. The answer became in the form of the blonde haired blue eyed actor Daniel Craig in Casino Royale. Bringing the character yet again to the modern day it's considered to be one of, if not the best film in the franchise with incredible action, drama, revenge and romance with the inclusion of Vesper Lynd. Plus parkour. But like...good. Thanks for supporting our Caravan Of Garbage review.

It's a pity the writing is catastrophically bad. One great chase scene, one very good fight scene, one very good action scene. That's about it. If you know hold'em, the poker scenes are disastrous. There's zero chemistry between Bond and Vesper. The writing for them is just terrible.

It is baccarat in the book, though. Not "Bacharach", however😂 As a matter of fact, I learned to play baccarat from the long passage in the book where Bond describes the game to Vesper... I think they changed it because a. nobody plays baccarat anymore but everyone knows the basic rules to poker so it's more relatable, and b. poker is a more visually interesting game to follow, based as it is more on skill than just memorisation of strategy.

One other reason for the change in direction of the series from Die Another Day to Casino Royale was the Austin Powers films. Daniel Craig said in an interview once that those films were responsible as they were big parodies of the Bond films, and after their releases Bond probably wouldn’t be taken seriously anymore by audiences. So the reason for going in a grittier direction, Bond just murdering anyone he could, the brutal torture sequence and just getting beat to shit is because they not only needed to keep up with modern spy thrillers, like Bourne, but because people wouldn’t be able to take Bond seriously after Austin Powers. So they really had to show people this wasn’t going to be a Brosnan/Moore pun quipping comedian.

What I did know was that EON productions never pass up an opportunity to do the bare minimum, the theme I heard online was meh, and they had replaced baccarat with poker. I was, to put it simply, resigned to it being average at best. Boy was I wrong. The theme song worked, poker worked, and EON had actually adapted a bond story properly for the first time in decades. I would love a disconnected straight up drama of a young Bond in WWII joining the secret service. Just an awesome action drama period piece. Less Kingsman and more Band of Brothers. With a young, brash ahole as the main character. But obviously being young, a lot of that swagger is still clearly brovado to cover the fact he's essentially still a kid.

I think the way this movie presented 45 minutes of poker was brilliant. Surrounding this “high stakes” poker game with the highest stakes of life and death was so well done. The changes of pace from a stairway fight to the death back to playing a card game was fantastic. And it kept me engrossed to what was happening on the table along with what was happening beyond it. This movie is so good.

So, one time, I met Mads Mikkelsen outside of the Fairmont in Toronto, he was having a smoke with Mr. Nathan Drake himself, Nolan North and I got to talking with them. I told Mads I was a big fan of his work in Hannibal and loved him in Bond, but I felt the puffer took away from the character's toughness and made him seem like, as you guys said, the nerd bullied in HS. Nolan, the gentleman that he is, disagreed and said actually it's the puffer that makes him such a great villain. He said that it made Le Chiffre seem more human instead of the normal mustache twirling villains seen in old Bond movies and I've done a 180 on how I thought about Le Chiffre prior!

12:15 I'm okay with the poker replacement, if only because the intent is to have the game itself be a source of tension, and the whole planet knows poker while baccarat is used in Bond specifically because it's snooty and high-falootin' just like his suits and his martinis and his machine gun bulletproof cars. In poker, if he gets a straight, I'm like, oh man, a straight. But in baccarat they're like "cinq pour la banque" and I'm like, whatever.

I really hope that when you get to Skyfall, you'll address how NOTHING in that movie makes ANY sense, and Bond continuously fails at EVERYTHING, until the very end, and then the new M is just like, 'Well, I didn't think you had it in you, Bond, but you successfully got my predecessor killed, so welcome back!' Roger Deakins shot it so beautifully, it's like people were hypnotized into accepting complete nonsense.

Plus, fans were pumped because it was the 50th anniversary film, and it had the obligatory anniversary-film references to the history of the franchise. Skyfall is probably my favourite Bond film. It feels modern, especially with the prevalence of hacking, but also the soundtrack is awesome, and I love Q, he’s an incredible character. And I love the arc of Bond dealing with his past, and M’s death. Edit: And something else in Casino Royale, originally when Vesper is crying in the shower, she was meant to be in just her underwear. It was actually Daniel Craigs idea that she should be fully clothed, as it makes sense if she was traumatised and ran into the shower she wouldn’t have stopped to undress.
