I really loved the realism of this. rather than laser beams and spaceships, this film captured the banality of actual power players. The villain of this film was not a deranged billionaire intent on seeing the world burn, but instead a calculated cabal of secondary world leaders. Realism. Oh like how James Bond somehow drove all the way to the other end of Lake Garda in an hour, changed suits and removed his inner vest and Mr.White as well all with Quantum goons hot on their ass firing like mad despite one of their bosses being in the trunk. Somehow it’s realism that Mathis could be taken by corrupt police officers at a party and be beaten up and stuffed into Bond’s trunk within minutes without alerting anyone. Somehow it’s realism that Bond could fly that rickety ass airplane and somehow outmaneuver a high speed fighter plane and then miraculously find the very sinkhole he and Camille were looking for among dozens and come out unscathed despite only opening their parachute a few feet above the ground after falling hundreds of feet. Yeah, very realistic. They forgot to make this movie even remotely fun and stylish. They made it dirty and unpleasant and unnecessarily try hard to seem realistic by making it so humorless and self serious despite how unrealistic and stupid it was. Worst official Bond movie. Even other bottom dwellers had more to recommend.

@Jon Valler That's something of a gross oversimplification, if it was true that people go to see sequels simply because the first film was good we'd never get any of those famous flops that killed off series. You can dislike the fast and furious films but they wouldn't keep getting people back in to watch them if they weren't doing something right. To say otherwise makes you sound elitist, yes Shawshank didn't make as much money, but there are more factors beyond simply Shawshank being "too good to be popular" or whatever, we've got to take into account the difference in cinema going audience in 90s vs 00s/10s, the expanded home cinema market, F&F got a lower rating and is a more family friendly topic (slightly) so pulls in families (more families will watch the fast car film than the brutal prison story) which also impacts sales, marketing campaigns, and so on and so on. Indeed ticket sales are one of the best general determiners of a film, word of mouth still counts for something, more back then, you'll never find Sharknado, Birdemic, The Room or such making a billion dollars at the box office. It was probably a forgone conclusion QoS would make a couple hundred million quid yes, first day tickets, die hard fans, the see anything a week audience all play their part. But I think rather than it being a slap in the face to Hollywood writers that QoS made money, it's more proof it isn't as bad as people like to say. Not perfect, not without stupid moments and odd choices but I don't believe people would have got it to almost Casino Royale heights if everyone disliked it, and by your own logic of "people watch 2nd film because 1st film good" (which will be largely true, just not entirely) surely you must think QoS is good because otherwise why did Skyfall get almost double the box office?

Oh dear. You expected realism in a Bond Film? I mean, compared to every other Villain in the franchise, Silva's scheme is about par for the course TBH. @ericlayton88883 жыл бұрын
For me it's less about the implausibility of Silva knowing everything he had to know in advance for his plan to work and more about the fact that there is absolutely no need for him to have come up with such a plan. He blew up M's computer with a fucking virus, did he really need to do anything other than that to kill her?
@jomo9993 жыл бұрын
@@ericlayton8888 I'm not going to argue the logistics of it because it's all pretty farfetched. But they clearly establish his plan was to publicly humiliate her before killing her. He blows up MI6 near the start of the film without her inside so she could see it - it's about her world falling apart around her. What better way to do that than escape just after she thinks she's caught him and then blow her away at the enquiry into her own incompetence?
@racewiththefalcons13 жыл бұрын
@@RogueBoyScout, Bond at least had _competent_ writing, even in some of its worst moments as a series. But the escape plan is absolutely, positively, *insultingly* terrible writing. Nothing in Die Another Day is worse. You cannot write that scene any more atrocious and hilariously ridiculous than it is. It's needlessly convoluted, impractical, embellished, and it only occurs because the same "I wanted to escape!" nonsense happened in the Dark Knight and Avengers.

Probably my second favorite of the Craig Bond films. That opening where M's bodyguard just shoots up the place was great I thought, I was completely blind sighted by it. I do also appreciate the rationale that oil has replaced gold as the most valuable substance. There was definitely thought behind the film, and it would've been fascinating to see how this would've turned out without the Writer's Strike happening at the same time. But again, even with the troubles the film went through during production, it's far more enjoyable to me than Casino Royale was. And I like to imagine that Jeffrey Wright in his scenes isn't actually acting with how fed up he is with everything, that's just how he felt with the filming of it and all the rewrites reducing his role in the film.

*12:53** He obviously used the Face Back app that Will Ferrell made in the motion picture The Other Guys starring Marky Mark Wahlburger and the aforementioned Will Ferrell. A technology that actually exists. When I was checking to make sure the app was called face back, I saw an article from 6 years ago saying how Facebook can do that.*

“Not anybody’s favorite” Wrong. It’s mine. Got ‘em. Genuinely though, it is. Casino is of course the better movie, and I’m not arguing it isn’t. However, I always watch these two back to back and in my opinion they work together extremely well as if they were almost one movie. Casino is the slower-paced setup, and then Quantum is the crazy fast-paced balls to the walls action half, and I really, really enjoy it.

I enjoy Quantum a lot - I love the opening car chase - but I do think Casino Royale is much better and has more inventive action overall (PARKOUR) lol. My real favorite is Skyfall though. That movie blew me away, Javier Bardems performance was perfect and the emotional payoff was stronger - almost like a great combination of Casino and Quantum.

Yes, straight after Casino Royale is how I watched Quantum too. It works, but it does feel like a weird fever dream.

@GiRayne from a purely filmmaking perspective it's not poorly made at all. As for the misogyny, as a woman, it didn't bother me that M died. Judi Dench was leaving the role sooner than later. And having a woman replace her would've been pandering. Her character was amazing and she got a proper send-off. While Moneypenny was disappointing but I don't chalk these things up as the entire film being misogynistic. And it's certainly not a reason why I didn't like it. It brought a lot of depth to her character.. They did lean more classic bond with his "womanizing" but ya know, he's that way in every movie. Quantum literally introduces a female counterpart just to kill her off in a terrible manner as a throwback. With Bond, it's easy to pick and choose when it's misogyny and when it's not, when the truth is, most of it is. His first love in Casino Royale betrays him for her own and dies at the end. Quite frankly it was refreshing in Skyfall to see him care so much for a woman he has no sexual relationship and still nearly die for

10:30 Thing about this is: Bond didn't trust anyone at that point because he was so bent on rage and hatred. Of course, M didn't really listen to Bond and just cleared Mathis and MI6 compensated him. When he's in the trunk, he's heavily beaten up and Bond uses him as a human shield ... but not on purpose. He didn't expect them to shoot and you can see that (or at least I did). Then he dumps him in the garbage because, at least that's how I understood it, he tried to buy himself some time? I don't remember who said it but supposedly this bought him some time because authorities would have to investigate longer what happened there. Otherwise, great review. I think this movie was okay, even good at some points. Could have been a lot better BUT the best part of it out of ANY Bond movie is Bond himself. I love how badass and bruised he looks and how well his clothing looks in this one. Especially in the artworks / prerelease material of the movie. Plus, his arc (with Camille) is pretty cool and the action, while yes, it was messy, definitely made you feel in danger and often felt pretty brutal. And the music ... oh my god, the music. Only the Bond theme was missing but even that was there at times. A proper gunbarrel at the start would have been nicer too (there's a lot of fan edits out there with Craig in Brosnan's gunbarrel: could have fit well in this but ah well). The villain was all right. As you said, he wasn't an iconic or menacing one, just a very real one, especially at the time, so that's positive too, I think. He does feel pretty insane though with his weird eye movements and the way he screams in the end fight, so at least there's that.

"For FOUR individualists: 12 fresh eggs Salt and pepper 5-6 oz. of fresh butter Break the eggs into a bowl. Beat thoroughly with a fork and season well. In a small copper (or heavy-bottomed saucepan) melt four oz. of the butter. When melted, pour in the eggs and cook over a very low heat, whisking continuously with a small egg whisk. While the eggs are slightly more moist than you would wish for eating, remove pan from heat, add rest of butter and continue whisking for half a minute, adding the while finely chopped chives or fine herbs. Serve on hot buttered toast in individual copper dishes (for appearance only) with pink champagne (Taittainger) and low music." ― Recipe for Scrambled Eggs 'James Bond'

I know James gets tired of playing through video games to footage and level select and all that but if he wanted to maybe give 007 blood stone a crack for spectre since I don't think that game had any video game adaptations and it ends on a cliffhanger implying blowfeld was behind it all.

I will defend the fight scene with Greene at the end - as someone who likes this film a bit better than most do! I once heard a quote - do not recall where, but it applies. It's something like 'The best swordsman in the world does not fear the second best swordsman in the world. He fears a novice - for a novice is unpredictable and unruly'. Something like that. Enjoying these reviews! Looking forward to the Spectre one - there's so much... Weird stuff in that film.

All the Bond villains do usually have some distinct visual trait, and Green's is super easy to miss: he has black eyes. It's referenced again in the opera that they go to, which is called Tosca, about a woman with black eyes (the audiovisual element of the performance has eyes as a major theme).

*12:47** idk there is logic in that train of thought. Just like how in poker the hardest type of player to play against is a beginner, since their moves make no sense you can’t get a read on them. It’s harder to play defensively against them. Same thing with fighting. If you’re going up against somebody that is trained you have a general idea of what they are going to try and do. But if it’s somebody that was not trained to fight they have no style, no fighting rhythm no rhyme or reason for what they are doing so you have 0 idea what’s coming next. That’s why in MMA when someone is fighting an opponent with a fighting style that doesn’t mesh with theirs, it is usually one sided and over quick. You’re trained on how to block a punch with the correct form, not wild as hell haymakers.*
