Mine is around ten years old, the other day it reset itself and lost all its settings. The progress timer which beeped periodically during the countdown timer function (which is really useful) has disappeared and it only beeps at zero now. Any ideas how to reinstate it?

I would try to replace the battery and see how it goes.

using gloves to handle a plastic g-shock is kinda funny :-)

Why not? There is oil on your hand and it can smudge the screen or other part of the watch
