Casio Royale Watch In-Depth Review, The Good Timekeeping Show

This episode of the Good Timekeeping Show is an in-depth review of the Casio AE1200WHD watch. This watch is often called the "Casio Royale" watch because it looks a lot like a watch worn by James Bond in the 1983 movie Octopussy. But the watch in the movie was actually a Seiko watch. As for this Casio watch, it has some great features like a map of the world to help you check out different time zones. It has 5 alarms plus the hourly "chime" signal. It has a 24-hour stopwatch and a 24-hour countdown timer. There's a pretty, amber-colored backlight. It's accurate to within 30 seconds per month (but, unofficially, I find it to be accurate to within 10 seconds per month). It's water-resistant to 100 meters and it's powered by a lithium CR2025 battery which should last about 10 years.
It's a good-looking watch and it's inexpensive. Typically, you'll see it for less than $30 and, as of the date I recorded this video, it was less than $23 at Amazon.com.

@@Simplifier123 Why ? Because steel looks so much nicer than plastic. For people who don't like the extra weight, there is still resin. A bit like G-Shocks. (Although in case of G-Shocks, I have a square made in steel. But I much prefer to wear my resin one.)

I got one of these a few months ago without knowing it was a cult classic. I love it to death and bought a second one in black to modify a few days ago. Also don't forget you can choose to have the backlight shine for either 1.5 or 3 seconds.

@@Karlenk0 when you are adjusting/setting the time, one of the options you can cycle through just says "1" by default, but you can toggle it to "3" by hitting either one of the right side buttons. This switches between being on for 1.5 to 3 seconds.

I've got this watch for 4yrs now. I bought a new casio digital watch and plan to give the casio royale to my wife. After wearing the new watch for 10mins, I took it off and gave it instead to my wife. 😁

If you are averse to the dark inner surround, I found one that has a light grey color instead of black. It still has the white text and this makes all the features listed blend in with the surround. I used alcohol to clean off the “10 year battery” and “world time” text to declutter the bezel. It looks much cleaner than having all the text everywhere.

The accuracy of my bronze version of the same, is a remarkable +/- 1.5 seconds a month! For that I am most grateful. For my professional job I've had a Breitling Emergency for 5 years. Still, my love remains for Casio of which their highly styled G-Shock GWN-1000, used for boat fishing. I took the "World Time / Illuminator" off mine today with a couple q-tips, some 91% rubbing alcohol, and about 3-5 mins of vigorous rubbing. It looks so much better!

I think the (mm - dd) to (dd - mm) date option should be switchable. I think if the world map display could be also switchable for a BIG display day of the week as a two way option as well.Would greatly improve the watch popularity. I bought this watch a week ago and replaced the watch band with a modified silicon band and it is now a very comfortable watch to wear. I also removed the illuminator and world time lettering because I saw how easy it was to remove. Your instructions on how to set the watch and use the features was terrific. I have 3 other Casio watches one of which is a triple sensor mud master and I enjoy this inexpensive watch as much as the pricey mud master. So thanks for the comprehensive review.

How's the watch overall? I don't usually wear watches. I used a Mi band 4 for two years. I bought it out of curiosity, and it's an ok one. I want to buy a watch with steel bracelet. I'm a medium sized guy. I liked this watch because of the design of dial. Would you suggest this watch? Or is there other suggestions that have metal bracelets? My budget is under $40.

You can turn the beeps off if you want to. I tend to like the hourly beep but I have to keep it turned off most of the time because it bothers my wife at night and because I do a lot of work in which I am recording audio.

I wanted to get the metal one at first. Metal is hard and the case is plastic. It's doesn't make sense to get. I got the $20 black and gold or bronze. Coolest watch I own.

Hi Greg, thanks for your another great presentation in sharing the tutorial of AE-1200. I notice your additional Dual Time (T2, T3, T4) displayed PM on the left. On mine, when I select NYC, LON, PAR, I do not see AM/PM. My Home Time is set to SIN and it displayed a AM/PM on the left. Do you know why mine Dual Times are not displaying AM/PM ?

This Watch clearly looks nothing like the Seiko Watch. The only similarity is they both have an analogue clock in the left hand side of the screen. But even the analogue clocks look completely different. The Casio has a map on the screen. The Seiko doesn't.
