When hacksawing screw/bolt, always put regular nut on first before cutting. Although filing is great/necessary, unscrewing nut, will ensure threads straighten up.

You're right, the stainless screw is stronger and that is the problem. It won't break, but the fiberglass will. Don't do this, use aluminum rivets instead. Easy to replace and easier on the fiberglass.

Well, I just had the same rivet break on my 2019 Casita Liberty Deluxe. I called Victor at Casita who handles repairs. While discussing the issue, I asked him about using a stainless steel bolt like you described and he told me that it would void my Casita warranty. Evidently, they use aluminum rivets so that if there is a large stress the rivet breaks. If you instead use stainless steel bolts, you might end up with hairline fractures in the fiberglass. This is more of a cosmetic issue, but I prefer to maintain the nice finish of the Casita without hairline fractures. Victor is going to send me the appropriate aluminum rivet that is 1 1/4 inch length and 3/16 inch diameter. And then I will make the repair.

Allen From what I've read, Casitas are built with rivets instead of screws to avoid stress cracks in the fiberglass. If the shell is under stress (which it is every time you drive it down the road), the rivet will break by design. If you replace the rivet with a screw, you risk cracking the fiberglass shell. Excellent video. The only thing I would do different is to use a wire stripper with a built in screw cutter. It is easier than a hacksaw and gives a cleaner cut.

Hey guys great videos. Just one comment. Just in case you need to repair more rivets using a "punch" instead of a hammer could lesson any further damage to the fiberglass. By replacing with stainless steel you made it better than before. Good job!

This wasn't a rivet repair, this was a screw repair of a rivet. Good if you are doing that, not so good if you want to repair with a rivet. interesting none the less

Thank you R.V.A. A simple project that works best when done correctly. I haven't found a source for the white protective plastic caps. Not available at our Lowes .Not on your Amazon link. Any suggestions? Also I bought a used Casita. The previous owner did a modification . So I need a small amount of matching carpet: a yard or so. Do you have a source? I have a contact question into Casita, but no response yet. Thanks in advance.

William Branham My understanding is that Casita will sell you a length of the carpet that has the foam backing like they currently use. They will also sell you a package of the rivet caps... I think they come with the base the caps snaps onto. It is best to call Casita, ask for service/parts and leave a message. They usually call back in a day or so in the afternoon because they are doing new owner pickups in the morning.

I believe this one was a #8, like 8-32 thread, stainless steel.

@@RVAdventuresTV My nut caps would only fit on a 1/4 inch diameter screw, which doesn't fit through the rivet hole! Did you change out the nut cap?

Very nice video. Good info. Allen, my 1999 Casita has a couple of screws coming up on the outside where the two halves of the shell come together. They are near the back. I don’t have anything to tighten them with. And, it’s not a screw like a Phillips or slot. Is this something that Casita in Rice, TX would have to do?

Casita doesn't repair in shop. Maybe if you called them they could direct you to a place that could help you.

Because I wanted a permanent solution... the key is just snugging it up, not tight, so as to give some ability to flex a little... the key then is washers, and sealing to prevent leaks.

Some folks say not to replace a rivet with a bolt so the trailer can flex... this repair has been in place for 1 1/2 years and no problems yet.

For $ 20K I would expect somthing better quality. Casita needs some better attachment methods. They look great, but way too many corners are cut in manufactureing. The roof should not have a bunch of plastic caps over rivet heads. The shell should have the attachments incorperated when the casting is done for the interior components. This video alone has disuaded me from buying a Casita. Disappointing
