Love these bands like Cirith Ungol, Manilla Road, Pagan Alter, Angel Witch, Witchfynde etc that all fit in this nexus point between NWOBHM and Power Metal. Kinda like gritty low-fantasy. Didn't know today was the day it was being dropped, but cannot wait to check it out now

I grew up in Ojai which is close to Ventura, so I saw a few local Cirith Ungol shows as a teenager. Then my best friend's cousin Jim Barraza joined the band - his debut was the Paradise Lost album. We jammed a few times when I was 16 - he would show me Randy Rhoads licks (his favorite guitarist) and I would show him Metallica and Slayer riffs (this was in 1986 - he was more into traditional metal and I was a hardcore thrash metal kid) Also, Jarvis Leatherby's real name is Jeff Hershey - he was in a pop punk band in Ventura before he decided to play metal. The new album is pretty damn good. I wasn't really a fan before that even though they were from my area - Tim's vocals were always too screechy for me, like chalk on a blackboard. But I actually like his voice now - it's mellowed over the years. I talk to Jim on Facebook occasionally - great to see that they got back together and are kicking ass 🤘

Paradise Lost is still my favorite Cirith Ungol album (even got that record and a shirt with its artwork), it just has such a perfect mix of nwothm and early doom. Dayum shame about what happened to the band with its release, but i'm glad that they are back together now and since their reunion, Metal Blade did a proper reissue of it.

I discovered cirith ungol while watching … Richard Pryor live from the sunset strip. I grew up in Los Angeles so it’s even more interesting to see the vibe and talent in that area at that time. Van Halen was playing down the strip where David letterman was just a stand up. Cirith ungol was there.

Of course I'll pronounce their name however they prefer, but "Not (K)Cirith Ungol a la Lord of the Rings" is an odd way to put it since Lord of the Rings is where it comes from.
@kitoyobeni14 жыл бұрын
That pronunciation comes from the movies though, as I don't recall any indication from the books. Band predates the movies, curious as to Tolkien's intent?
@krumphau4 жыл бұрын
Tolkien wrote a lot of notes and appendices on languages and words in his books since that was such a big part of it. They did their research well for the films, so unless they particularly messed that one up, I'm reasonably sure that's the way it was intended.
@kitoyobeni14 жыл бұрын
@@krumphau Would he have included pronunciation keys? Seems like a omitting that could easily slip through the cracks unless spoken in a recorded interview or something. Is their another example of a hard c in a similar spelling in English?
@krumphau4 жыл бұрын
@@kitoyobeni1 The conversation made me curious so I looked around a bit, and there's a guide he wrote in the back of Silmarillion that's been reproduced on a few different websites. Among the first things is a very clear 'C is always pronounced hard, as in K'
@rmtaillefer4 жыл бұрын
@@krumphau I want to say the appendices in RotK also has a pronunciation guide too? Been a while. My assumption is that it has something to do with Tolkien being a scholar of Old English. In OE spelling convention 'c' was (always?) pronounced with a hard 'k' sound. OE borrowed the alphabet the Romans used, which itself was borrowed from the Greeks and the Etruscans. The overlap of 'c' and 'k' goes all the way back to then, and they don't start differentiating until Middle English, I want to say? I'm not educated on this subject, I'm just regurgitating half-remembered info from the EXCELLENT "History of English" podcast. Two big thumbs up if you are interested in etymologies, etc.

Coincidentally, I just got into Cirith Ungol. It never clicked that Jarvis was in the band for some reason despite being a huge Night Demon fan. No, what got me into them, literally earlier this week, was having Arthur Brown's "Fire" put in my brain and then me looking up covers only to discover Cirith Ungol's cover. The new album kicks so much ass.
@staalhard6664 жыл бұрын
Forever Black is quite different because of Jarvis' groovier basslines. I'm a big Night Demon fan, but still need to get used to his artistic influence on the new CU album. You can clearly pick out the riffs he wrote compared to the more classical approach of the other members. I like the nods to their earlier work they put on the album. Dont have the album at hand, but I think it's the third track where they use the opening riff of Black Machine as the main theme for instance. Was supposed to see them double headline this weekend... Damn Covid-19 :(

Very cool and thanks for the love to this super-cult band. Though I've been a headbanger since the late 80's, I didn't discover Ungol until '93 or so--they were THAT underground! I got to meet Rob Garven back in the late 90's and yeah, they are the real deal, with roots in the very earliest days of metal. Interestingly enough, during the 80's, the guys in Cirith Ungol and Manilla Road weren't even aware of each others' existence, despite their stylistic similarities and being influenced by the same 60's/70's psyche and heavy rock bands (Hendrix, BOC, Sabbath, Granicus, Uriah Heep, etc.).
