Part 13: • Cassidy on Griselda Ge...
Part 15: • Cassidy on Being Down ...
Part 1: • Cassidy Doesn't Think ...
--------
In this clip, Coach PR started asking Cassidy to break down Drake and Kendrick Lamar’s rhyming styles, and Cassidy started off speaking about Drake’s versatility. Cassidy pointed out that Drake doesn’t even have to even rhyme words to come off smooth, and he added that he never rhymes one-syllable. Cassidy added that he sees rhyming one-syllable as “cheating,” and he explained that he’s critical of other artists because he’s so hard on himself. From there, Cassidy spoke about his podcast, where he will break down different songs by each bar. After a breakdown on the difficulty of rhyming words with multiple syllables, Cassidy stated that Fabolous, Griselda, and Eminem can do that, but he added that it’s rare.

I think metaphors and punchlines matter way more than syllables, Cassidy just being a nerd and technical about lyrics. Drake has way more punchlines and metaphors in his lyrics than Kendrick. Drake and Wayne were showcasing that ability early in their careers. Kendrick just spits a ton of syllables and rhymes words fast to make it sound fancy but don't be really saying anything impressive other than conscious lyrics to make you think.
@YoungMesrine
@YoungMesrine Жыл бұрын
@@TheDamnFarao Yes but punchlines are important and if you punch without rhyming it's not good...Not everybody can punch but at least every rapper should rhyme better because it's easier...that's why Cassidy is mad because it's easy to rhyme with syllables but some niggas still can't do it
@TheDamnFarao
@TheDamnFarao Жыл бұрын
@Young Mesrine🤴🏿 Well Cassidy is talking about a niche type of thing that most people don't gaf about. Like papoose when he choose a specific letter and ONLY rhymes words starting with that letter, that's niche. Most listeners aint gon be like "damn that bar was hard he rhymed 5 syllables" but a clever bar or punchline will always do the trick.
@LukeReneMusic
@LukeReneMusic Жыл бұрын
@@TheDamnFarao nothing wrong with conscious lyrics that make you think… to me, it all matters.. I think there’s times where it calls for u to be witty with simple punchlines & metaphors & there’s also times to showcase your vocabulary & rhyme words on a high level.. I think everybody we consider great all have the ability to do all of those things at the same time.

@@closure9938 u didn’t ask me, but this is a good question. Because Kendrick does use a lot of syllables but it sounds forced at times. Like he’ll add unnecessary words to make the syllables match. I would have to do a deep dive on Drake because his rhymes can be simple at times but he has a huge talent for connecting with the audience even if it’s simple. Sometimes the highest form of sophistication is simplicity.

Think about how hard it is for someone who raps like Cassidy who already raps in a way where there is a limited amount of pockets to find new creative lines to say that he hasnt said before and that other high level lyrical rappers havent used before. Being a lyricist these days is a thankless job. You work twice as hard and you appeal to only a margin of music fans who actually put time into deciphering the lyrics.

@@iceman18ize You can call him mid tier as an artist I'll concede that because conceptually and stylistically he hasn't made as much effort to change and evolve his style. He stayed in the same lane for practically his entire career without much deviation. But as a lyricist I'm going to disagree with you. He clearly is one of the chosen rappers who actually pays attention to detail in his bars. He's not just rhyming for the sake of rhyming.
@iceman18ize
@iceman18ize Жыл бұрын
@@shawnhawes7545 I don’t see him outpunching Method, Los, Royce, Thought, hell even Elzhi to be honest he’s not catching or beating them in any pocket ANY day of the week. He never evolved, he stays in that same shell mostly. He pokes his head out to eat within his range, but he never moves his feet. He stayed in that same comfort zone and never ventured to other pastures. Which is why we get this slow redundant speech on bar construction and 1000 critiques for new artists, instead of doing comprehensive breakdowns of his individual projects as an artist. The fact is, the songs are scattered chickenscratch with little direction as a complete package. Cass is a rapper, I’ll give you that. But he’s so stuck in his ways, that that is all he’ll ever be, never an artist. He will be remembered as a technical pioneer, no more. Remember “Flawless, Real Talk”…? That’s Cass, just with a more refined/ polished exterior, but essentially the same formula...

To break down what cass is saying “Astrology” “Carefully” = that’s rhyming one syllable because the only part of both words that rhyme is the last two letters. Now to get in a lyrical bag and rhyme all the syllables you would need to find words like “Apology” “Apostrophe” Hypocrisy” “Artistry” These are words with more than one syllable to rhyme with astrology

That's what made me fell for Hov, he would use different styles in different songs and for me that's dope.
