Cast Iron Table Saw Restoration UPDATE 5 - PRIMER

Restoring a legend! I had the old paint stripped off by sandblasting and the crack in the cast iron repaired by professionals.
Welding cast iron is specialized work and I didn't want to risk messing it up.
Time to start prepping for assembly. First things first, getting a coat of primer on the large saw components.

Nice job on the weikd most ppl have a hard time weilding cast iron but you got a nice weild. And a great finish on the painting of the saw a lot better than the gray. 👍👍👍👏👏👏✌✌✌

I’m a machine tool fitter and I use to recondition laths, surface grinders and milling machines. There is a brush on filler you can use and then using wet and dry sandpaper with water to rub it down smooth using a sanding block. Then you can spray paint. Just a suggestion. But it looks like you got handle on it. Good job.

You have a great way of explaining what you are doing without making it too complicated or skimming over it. When you said you were going to do automotive filler I was a bit sceptical but it turned out great. I would have potentially made a cardboard painting booth or something to stop the particles spreading around the workshop but that's only my take on it.

I would have preferred to do it like that but my time is very limited and with some projects I simply don't have the time and resources to do what I want to. Sometime I need to compromise.

It's looking good 😊 It looks like your going around the spray painting the right way........ getting advice from the people at the garage. The thing I've found about learning practical skills on line is that they aren't standing in front of you to give instant advice. Don't get me wrong, I love watching videos to learn from, but there comes a point where you have absorbed everything you can for this stage of your practical development. Now you need to put it in to practice, practice and more practice. After that, find someone who knows more then you and go through what you have done and any problems. At this point, having someone in front of you and giving help and advice is going to help more then videos as they can tailor the advice for you. Once you've actually got going again, that's where the videos can come back in to build on your knowledge. My last tip on spray painting is learnt over several mountain bikes that I stripped back to bare metal before re painting........ wet and dry paper can fix any mistakes you make...... I wish more things in life were that easy to fix!! If you make a mistake, sand it back a little then re spray. Have fun and try not to think of sanding as a punishment or something to be endured, listen to a book, music or just let your thoughts wonder, it's a great way to spend an afternoon 😊👍👍👍👍👍

Glad to see you working on the saw again. It's coming along nicely. If you don't mind, I have two suggestions for prep and paint. One is to mix auto body filler on a flat surface rather than in a cup. It's much easier to mix and to utilize all of the product. It's a perfectly viable technique. All large cast iron machinery is finished with a generous coat of body filler. The other is to sand between coats with nothing finer than 320 grit paper. The 1000 grit finish is far too slick and doesn't provide the proper tooth for the next coat to adhere.

On rough surfaces such as yours. I would put a heavy coat of primer on it. Then stand it smooth. Then put a second coat on before applying the finish coat.

Congratulations on your progress so far. I don't get into metalwork. Wood is my thing. So, I wouldn't have even considered a project of this scope. My thoughts go to the restoration of the inner workings. Making precision, fine-fitting cuts consistently would be my main goal. So, I'm interested in seeing if any of the gears, threaded adjustments, or bearings will need any work. It also seemed like the fence and the slide support needed some help. Maybe you could show us any of that work, too. Cheers!

If you have another product using body filler try looking for tubes of premixed. Makes things a little easier. Thank you for sharing videos.

I always use a truck bed liner spray paint when repainting big tools. It's incredibly durable, easy to apply, and the rough surface hides any imperfections. The rough surface does hold sawdust a bit, but I like that it's super strong and looks great.

Another good video. It's a slow process restoring anything but when you start to paint the end suddenly looks closer. Can't wait to see the final product. The secret to a good paint job is patience and pay close attention to the little details. Good Luck !!

Very nice work. The saw looks great now without the finish coat. It will look even better with it. I like putting down a piece of cardboard between paint projects and the plastic. I have had the plastic tear before.

Hi A clever idea to wrap the dowels with paper. In order to get a better result with your spraying, I advise you,, not to use your wrist. You have to move your whole arm and not the gun, this should always have a right angle relative to the spraying surface. By the way, I really love your video’s. Keep it safe, it is not over yet. Great channel👍 ( having restored classics and antique cars for 30+ yrs) in the future if your going to use filler, seal the metal 1st before using the filler. Glad to see you were wearing gloves as oils from your hands gets into the bare metal and plays havoc with primers and paint .. also never paint in an area where you have use silicone spray

I've watched the whole series, diving into round 2. Can you recommend a paint sprayer, maybe the model you used? Didn't see one on your affiliate links. I think from watching the video that it is it's own unit, correct? Meaning, the sprayer connects to an air compressor? I just picked up an 80 yr-old Walker-Turner 1180b 10" cabinet saw in awesome condition, minus the need for a fill resto. Thank you for taking on this project and recording the progress! Well done, starts looking good, the hardest bit is now over 😊, watching this was like watching myself when I did mine, did it the same way, I am glad to see it in action. What fence are you planning to fit on it, the original or an aftermarket like the Very Super Cool Tool fence, Incra or another fence? I use the original but as it tilts to the right, I am planning to get a new fence, most likely VSCTool fence as it can be used on both sides of the blade.

Great video as usual :-) sorry I only think about this now - but it maybe a long shot if I recall you in the western cape area , try contacting Maxmore or other knitting mills ( the older ones ) once upon a time most had Bentley Coments ( recall as a appy ) each knitting mill ( most the technicians ) that worked on these machines will have the thread cutting tapes/dies - - ok there are a few machines that were converted to witworth and some to metric but most would still be UK imperil maybe this idea could help your project

@@WoodshopJunkies Thanks Mate.I bought the saw a couple of years ago but the name plate was missing.A lot of surfing and the nearest I could get to what type of saw it is is that its most probably a Burrsgreen.So heavy that it takes 4-5 men to move it.Have it now on a platform with castors.Thanks for coming back.

You NEVER wet sand body filler. Its hydroscopic!!! Metal WILL rust under the filler!!!!

never ever use water near a sandblasted iron surface! It will rust the moment it touches it (even the air humidity). you may have cloth-dried it but it eventually rust underneath.
