Great to finaly see a something about this method :) I use it to make ring bands. I recently added them to my instagram for the first time too which is a coincidence. I also use natural stone but Emerald doesn't react well in my experience. It took me a long, long time to get it right because there is very little info out there! It was a great challange working it out for myself though 😊

@@OnlineJewelryAcademy Hey, how can you do this on a ring? I can cast them flat set but I like how you poke the sand clay down to set the stones, but how can this be done on a ring and lining it all up? Many thanks

@@beccawall665 You would need to purchase a molding ring that you can fill with molten metal through the side. Unfortunately, I don’t have a resource for that type of mold. You’ll have to search for one online. 😀

How do you prevent the stones from floating to the surface when the silver is poured ? Is there a way to stick them to the bottom ? Thank you. I really appreciate you taking time to make these tutorials:)

The casting clay material is a little sticky. Do you just position the stones do that they’ll show through the surface. You might have to experiment a little to perfect your technique. Thanks for watching! 😀

Are you sure that awuamarine is possible? I used it and it comletely shattered. But it was a rough and natural stone. was that the problem?

Rough stones with inclusions are not a good Choice for this process. You can Google a complete list of stones that are appropriate for this type of casting. Good luck with your creative pursuits.

The types of stones you can uses is included in the video. You can also look up the same information on the web or in a gem identification book. Generally, it's best to use CZs and corundum for this process.

Why would one not use coloured cz's ? I'm guessing the heat affects colour but would love to hear more info on this. Thanks for the great video!

When I was researching this video I learned that some CZ's cannot be used for this type of work because of their chemical structure. Just like natural stones, some CZ's cannot withstand the heat shock that this techniques puts on the stone. My best suggestion is to consult a gem identification book that covers this topic so that you aren't wasting money on cracked stones or ones that loose their color. : )

Sorry two more questions, what is the difference in casting grain and sterling silver? In SA I don't believe there is a difference. And secondly if the process is a dud and working with cz's, is there a way to cut out the cz or melt and separate and try again or is it a done deal once its cast? Maybe melting and pouring in bubbling water to create pellets again would help in separate stone from metal? These are wild ideas I know, but very curious....

If you would like to learn more about gemstones, I highly recommend checking out other KZbin channels and visiting your local library for free information. You could also speak to a graduate gemologist in your area. A book that I have on my shelf is "Gemstones of the World". Here's an Amazon link for your convenience: amzn.to/2OcV8bH Casting grain is merely clean/refined sterling silver in a granular form. You must use at least 50% new metal (casting grain / scraps) when doing direct casting (please refer the the other OJA videos on this topic). Stones caught in imperfect castings can easily be broken out our cut out.

I recommend that you search Google for stones that can survive direct casting processes. Personally I wouldn’t use diamonds for this process because of their value. And I don’t believe moissanite is compatible with the process. Good luck!🍀
