This book sounds amazing, and I'll definitely get around to it at some point. I would recommend "Annihilation of Caste" by B.R. Ambedkar. He was born an "Untouchable" (Dalit) in the late 1800's and he challenged the system as well as debating Gandhi on some of his less than enlightened doctrines. My copy is with an introduction by Arundhati Roy which runs about 140 pages. The introduction is actually very good and sets a very understandable framework for Ambedkar's work. I'm listening to an audiobook for the first time, "Reclaiming History" by Vincent Bugliosi about the JFK assassination only because I can't find the book. I was worried I wouldn't be able to concentrate on an audiobook, but this one is holding my attention. I may give others a whirl.

These are such wonderful recommendations! Thank you so much for sharing. I'm very interesting in learning more about the Caste system in India so I will head here first.

I haven't read caste yet but I've bought it. Her first book, the Warmth of Other Suns is amazing too.

Wonderful review. I really dislike audiobooks.because they take so long to get through and I told like to be read to. Also I'm not good at multitasking. However I am tempted to listen to this audiobook due to your great experience with it. I am interested in the Indian culture regarding caste system because I'm with a man born in India. Also I am Latina and there is a caste system or was in the fifties that I never understood. I heard about this video from all of and it's as good as she said it was. Aloha

I really liked this book, and read it without having read The Warmth of Other Suns too. I had similar feelings about it really making me rethink how I saw race in the U.S. For me, the comparison to Nazi Germany and India really affected how I judged our own systems. Great review.

Oh I completely agree re: the study of Nazi caste system. My mouth actually gaped at some of the information. This is the stuff we need to know!!

Yay! I read TWOOS last year and am eager for CASTE. I started laying the groundwork by listening to the podcast series with Wilkerson and Oprah: podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/oprahs-book-club/id1529009628 and will see when I can get the book! Great video 😍
