This is one of the options on BOTM this month! I opted for The Last Story of Mina Lee but added Caste to my TBR after reading the summary. This was a great review, thank you Jourdan! I'm gonna make sure I pick this one up the next time I buy new books. I also had no idea who Isabel Wilkerson was before watching this, so thank you for mentioning The Warmth of Other Suns bc that's all been added to my list!

Ty so much for this review!! I loved the Warmth of Other Suns so much because there was a narrative structure to it along with all the history and facts, but I was feeling a little weird about this one because it didn't seem to have that same tone. But!! I'll get it on your recommendation (one of your best reads of the year?!).
@LEFTONREAD
@LEFTONREAD 3 жыл бұрын
Yes like I said the warmth was written in such a narrative structure. I too was concerned with Caste. Hard to explain but once you get started, I think you will see the writing although not AS narrative in structure, narrative none the less and very well packaged/written.

Regarding your final comments about feeling less optimistic about how embedded the caste system is, I wonder, have you read Upstream, by Dan Heath? He outlines a pragmatic approach to systemic change, that I think you would find encouraging and invigorating. Thank you for doing this review of Caste! Very informative.

Late to the party in most senses, but thanks for your review. I just finished Caste. I read The 1619 Project a couple times. Malcom X, and I'm also currently reading It's not a Crime to be Poor. All of these since 2020. I'm from small town north central Indiana, and I can confirm, as a 44 year old male, there is a lot I just didn't know. In my area we have a tendency (as a "liberal") to think we're ok, it's the South we need to worry about, but Caste took me to a different level of understanding after reading the previous books. There is A LOT people like me in the midwest DO NOT know about. And I'm pretty sure a lot of us a truly uncomfortable learning about because "we didn't do it" and a whole heaping ton of cognitive dissonance. We've truly been brainwashed into thinking the US has done nothing wrong and now I am trying to figure out how to change minds without using the "racism" word because people just shut down. I would shut down when being accused. I think Caste is going to help me.

Thank you for the review. Both of her books are terrific. As much as I didn't want to put this book down, I often wanted to stop because of the cringeworthy (I'm being nice) stories. Sometimes it was hard to (re)hear these stories. Unfortunately, those who need to hear these things the most are the least likely to read it. Also, I did like the story to end the book. She shouldn't have been put in that situation, but hopefully that plumber is a fractionally better person because of it.

I listened to this on audio as soon as I saw it was added to my library's collection and I really liked how she framed the issue of race in America as a caste system, and the information about Nazi Germany was something I had never heard before and gave me a lot to think about. Since reading the book I've wondered a lot about how we can rid ourselves of our systemically racist government, etc. and it's difficult to imagine a way out without burning the whole damn thing down, especially the way the nation is divided the way that it is right now. I will need to pick up my own copy at some point so I can really study it, so if you do a Readalong, count me in!

So much of this comment! It is really hard to picture how the system itself can be reformed, due to how imbedded everything is from the very foundation. Lots to digest.

I'm halfway through Part 3 and I really can see the similarities of this caste system imbued in the last 400 years of the Philippines. Even up to now, most Filipinos want to look white because of social privileges.
