Casteism in Tamil Nadu’s classrooms: Justice Chandru speaks to Dhanya Rajendran

Justice Chandru committee was formed by the Tamil Nadu government in August 2023 after two Dalit children in Nanguneri - 17-year-old Chinnadurai and his 13-year-old sister - were attacked by six classmates of Chinnadurai, who belonged to a dominant caste group. The committee submitted its 600-page report to the Tamil Nadu Government on June 18, 2024. The committee found casteism entrenched in classrooms and has given several recommendations. Justice Chandru and TNM’s Azeefa Fathima, who reports on caste-related issues, speaks to Dhanya Rajendran.

Excellent work. If this is happening in Tamil Nadu, imagine what must be going on in UP and Bihar. The idea of pride in one's caste was always a slippery slope, and this idea has gained strength over the years with caste politics. Perhaps Dr Ambedkar knew of this. OBCs have benefited the maximum with caste politics and therefore are also the biggest oppressors now, while they continue to point fingers at upper castes for all the evils to keep their politics viable.

Justice Chandru made one mistake. He should have recommended the State to prosecute the parents if not criminally but at lease civil case, negligence of parenting. Justice Chandru was a SFI activist who was against then Karunanidhi regime which killed an SFI activist in Annamalai university and made the victims parents to deny their son was killed. The protest was against AU conferring Doctarate to then CM MK After all SFI activism in mid 1970s DMK and ADMK banned all political activities in educational institutions, instead they promoted caste groups I was a student in the same university then and our faculties formed caste groups under the pressure from DMK and AU management.

Are review petitions filed against dismissal of Atrocities Cases? If not, why? Are the complainants given a timely reply when they appeal to the state government authorities for filling a review petition? Which is the Department responsible in Government of Karnataka for filling a review petition?

In 2010 to 12 I was doing my HSC in one of the Govts school, I had to face a spot on discrimination from my Teachers dividing Few of Us ( so called Scheduled) in a separate line and gave us limited guidance where in my other school mates had opportunities to have a full fleged sessions , opps for Tutions (Free) and been treated well with words and actions. But still we took a stand and self taught us to become a high scoring students among them all ... but the pain and we went through is unexplainable.. Not allowed to have food together with everyone nor to Talk to the teachers directly for Any doubt clearance.. I took an initiative to learn from other classes and other state books to educate my fellow suppressed to make them Equal in getting an education.. It wasn't fair for sure thinking it's still happening

Because caste is not just in certificate. Caste is in God you worship, caste is in what you eat and how you cook, caste is in where you live, caste is in everything. I have seen people who could tell another persons caste just by looking at their face. Caste certificate is the only way these people get reservation and benefits from schemes for them. In fact, certain castes have fought for caste certificate because they couldnt get any benefits. Irony is, even getting that certificate is not an easy task for them.

Yeah I know that in Tamil Nadu surnames are not used much. I am speaking of other states Sharma misra chakraborty Reddy nair Naidu Choudary Coming to the point of reservations, it should be reformed. In public life one becomes caste conscious only after these surnames and reservations. The case of these boys is an ecosystem of a village level caste system being taken as a matter of privilege and sanctions. If caste associations are banned may be such public approval for the acts of the boys might not be there. Just as in rape where 16-18 are treated as adults, let there be reforms of treating 15-18 as adults instead of juveniles. It is an act of crime irrespective of caste. Let the crime be dealt harshly leaving caste aside. If one takes caste as pride let the punishment be doubled. Cause detternace to the effect that such things don't happen...just implement the already existing criminal laws effectively and make amendments in such laws..

I was thinking that TN is modern and liberal state due to Dravid movement of Periyar Ramaswamy...but this interview made me wrong. TN is also lagging in abolishing the caste system and stopping caste based decrimination. According to jews women with menstrual cycle and Lepers were considered impure and in bracket it is written untouchables. It is also written that Jesus shared the love of god with all those who were consideder impure by the JEWS not Christian as there were no christians before Jesus. Both women with discharge issues and the lepers were considered outsiders (untouchables) and impure as per the law (Lev. 13:46, 15:19). He did not hesitate to share the love of God with tax collectors, drunkards, prostitutes and thieves who were treated as untouchables. This verse does not talk about caste based untouchability.

This order truly creates a caste of people who shun "unclean" things and people. This is how the "caste system of untouchability" arose, in ancient Israel and all across all the way to India. So what does "unclean" mean? It means RITUALLY IMPURE. For a surgeon or nurse in the operating room, you and I are untouchable; we are surgically unclean. In Hinduism "Unclean" is called ASHUDDHA. A=not; Shuddha means ritually pure/clean. Purohits (priests) around a sacrificial fire are extremely fussy about ritual purity/impurity. Someone who has just skinned an animal or tanned leather is ritually impure in that regard. Hope that clarifies things somewhat.
