I took a 3d printed model and cast it into brass using the sand casting method.

I expected the abrasion finger to get dipped in snow too-ice is my injury-prone best friend. I appreciate the muted cutting/grinding. watching your videos is not time wasted---andy

You aren't kidding that accidents happen fast with power tools. I inadvertently drilled into my finger a few years ago by holding a part as I was drilling. I hit the exact spot to sever a nerve and leave half my fingertip numb. Fortunately it has 80% recovered since. The rammer turned out great, and with a bit of character to it!

Oh geez. Drill bits to the finger scare me. I think I fear table saws the most. Glad your finger has mostly recovered though.

Looks great to me! The secret with the feeder is to make it even chunkier than the thing it's feeding. Your feeder was a bit small, so it froze before the rammer, which can make the shrinkage on the casting even worse. I'm sure it will work just fine though 👍 And welding on brass? You're brave! Hope you didn't get sick!

The tipped part of the rammer is used to first pack the sand on the nearsest parts of the sand to the edges of the casting box. This prevents the sand from falling out of the box when lifted. Other thing is that I am worried that you will pack the sand too much with a brass sandrammer. I casted mine in aluminum and it is more than enough and you do not get tired so quick. A thing to consider….

I think you could have gotten a better result of your messy weld by hammering it flat before grinding. Brass responds quite well to that.

Ah, I didn’t think of that. That might have helped.

Lower the bed temperature instead. That usually helps

hey just fyi some elmer’s glue sticks work wonders for cheap bed adhesive especially for abs printing where a brim might not be enough

Ah Elmer’s glue. For some reason I thought people used hot glue sticks!

Business end is perfect and weight could be too. Large radius fillets where sprue meets casting maybe, and/or either a core, or thicker and/or extra gates, not sure? You could always recast it but why bother, it's a rammer. Casting is perfectly functional and will work exactly as intended. She's a beauty, and THE RAMMER will yield many a masterpiece. Compare this to a shinny ingot hunk of metal sitting on a shelve with zero functionality. Sorry about finger. Just another battle-scar that makes you a tougher, smarter, stronger super-hero.

Yep. I would much rather use my ingots than to stack them on a shelf.

what oil do you add ?

I save the vacuum pump oil from the pump that I use for vacuum casting. That oil seems to work well.

Brazing is a skill I haven’t picked up yet. I’ll need to get a torch someday. A big pice of metal like this takes a big torch to get hot.

That turned out really cool looking. Great job! That thing looks like it means business. A glue stick will solve your bed adhesion problems in the future. It come off with water afterwards.

I would love to see some lost PLA videos. I’ve been trying to sand cast some coins but I can’t get good details. Possibly because the angles are too straight and grabbing the sand when I remove the coin molds from the sand. I think vacuum casting the coins would work a lot better.
