You can skip the whole water step - volume is volume. The line the sand makes in the cup is the volume to fill the moulds, so if you make that much total silicone it will fill that amount. Water and silicone don't have the same density either, 100g of silicone is a lower volume than 100g of water.
@captainweekend527628 күн бұрын
I think the part that makes it tricky is he has to mix two parts evenly which is tricky since he needs to measure them separately so they don't start reacting whilst he's still measuring, so he'd need to be going through three mixing cups for every pour which is a bit wasteful, whilst water is lower density than silicone it appears to be accurate enough give or take a few floz.
@Jademalo28 күн бұрын
@@captainweekend5276 You still need to use multiple cups per pour, that's just the nature of two part mixtures like that unfortunately. You could potentially fill a cup with the sand volume and mark it, empty that, fill to the mark with water, weigh that, and then double the weight and mark again. That gives you one cup with two marks for the amount of silicone you need, so long as you dry it properly.
@PeteOfDarkness27 күн бұрын
Jay could just weight half of sand and use that as reference guide.

A suggestion for future casting: The stuff you trimmed off of these casts to get a flat surface, you can reuse those trimmings in your next cast to save a bit of silicone. Pour in enough silicone to thoroughly coat your bases, then you can sprinkle in chunks of old castings before filling it the rest of the way up with fresh stuff. The chunks of old silicone help fill up the volume of the mold all the way so you're using less new silicone to fill the same amount of space!

This year slightly taught me what it is to be you, Jay. Just around the time you announced you started a Drukhari army, I had also just started one. In the video I made a comment that 2000 points could be knocked out in a month rather than the year you planned for it, though of course you paint to a much higher standard than I do and have more projects. After that I finished two Combat Patrol boxes plus some extra models and earned a New Year New Army medal for it. I have painted 0 Drukhari since. I was sidetracked by a move and then other projects such as adding another 1000 points to my Salamanders, a 127 model strong Kroot army, an Ordo Xenos box when the Imperial Agents got a Codex, and most recently Kill Team for which I painted the whole Hivestorm box, the Gallowdark terrain and several other teams. So definitely a very productive six months or so, but the Drukhari models I still have in my backlog do really need to be attended to at some point. So many minis, so little time.

You can extend the working time of the silicone by putting in the fridge overnight. It would probably extend the shelf life as well. For 3d printing, the PLA filament is probably the closest in type to the GW bases, rather than resin.
@knightsljx28 күн бұрын
you can literally print HIPS, the same stuff miniatures are made off, though the bases might be ABS. But PLA is faaaaaarrrrrrr from the actual bases and not recommended. They soften easily with heat and become brittle when exposed to air

Always enjoy the videos @eonsofbattle. If your thing is hands-on homemade stuff this is awesome. But like many “make it for less” type videos after you factor everything in, it’s just as expensive if not cheaper to purchase these things. Special tools (or making them as Jay did), materials, time spent, and the inevitable mistakes and imo I’m better off buying resin bases from my LGS. I love creating and part of the hobby is just that but after years I realized kit bashing or building from scratch cost more money and resulted in an inferior result. Jay’s bases look great, no doubt. Keep up the great tutorials

Great video Jay you did a fantastic job as always. One comment - using a drill to stir your silicone was a bad idea. As you already mentioned yourself it introduced a lot of bubbles. Your pour technique mitigated some of the issue but in future gently fold the mix instead of vigorously whisking. I know this because I bake cheesecakes - the same rule applies if you don't want air bubbles in your cake.
