We had two different glass-top stoves over a 15 year period and used cast iron regularly without any breakage. One thing, though, is that a lighter-colored stovetop will be quickly discolored by cast iron, turning the 'eye' area black. That doesn't scrub off but it doesn't affect the stove.

The house we bought and moved into 3 years ago had a brand new glass cook top stove already in it. We wouldn't have chosen that, but it's what was here. Gas is unavailable in our area, so we've been stuck with using this. We have bought 3 induction burner units since living here, which we really love, though they do eat up a lot of counter space when they are in use. Anyway, we have had no problems at all using our cast iron skillets on either surface at all. We just use Barkeepers Friend and elbow grease to clean the cook top, and the induction burners don't really accumulate much buildup at all. I think the key is being consistent in cleaning both after every use and AFTER they have cooled down.

Great video and amen! When I bought my house 10 years ago it came with a glass cook top stove. The glass top already had a bad crack and a large chipped piece missing but I have been able to use it just fine with SS and CI. The cracks have probably worsened over time. I will be replacing my electric stove with a gas stove. Glass is just too delicate and getting a crack or chip would bother me too much, besides I prefer gas.

The cook top is supposed to be made out of ceramic and not glass. I have a high end induction cook top and I like to use cast iron. I use a Teflon protection sheet between the cook top and the cast iron pan. This sheet is technically a BBQ mat. This mat avoids scratches and abrasion damage. As for the stainless steel boarders (edges) I protected them in case if the pan is moved up against the stainless steel boarders.

I don't know what brand your stove is but I had one that wasn't 30 years old took a pan of cornbread from the oven and it slipped from my grip approximately 3 inches from the stove top and shattered the entire glass top. Replaced with a induction glass top. I still am VERY CAREFUL due to that experience, so I would be very cautious and no sliding of any pots and pans they WILL scratch the surface to some degree. Sides are more brittle, our "old" (just about 5 years or so) stovetop broke thanks to a square bottle of oil just tipping and hitting the side. Caused a huge crack in that was about 1/3 of the stove. It was one of those that you mount in the counter and not a standalone one and it didn't have any protective material on the sides, our new one have some metal protecting it. We had glass for most of my life first the ceramic ones and now induction. As long as you keep the stove and the bottom of the pan clean it's not going to cause scratches, get something small and hard underneath and that dirt will scratch it emediatly, basically the same thing as when you clean the glass on a aquarium the magnet scraper won't scratch until you get just one little grain of sand between them and then you get a scratch. The cloudiness is often caused by leaving some layer of grease and oils and let it heat up so its exactly like seasoning, and will happen with any pan, this can look like tiny scratches and is probably part of the myth that glass tops scratches easily. When you oil your pan on the bottom let it heat in the oven instead (if you have a wooden handle just remove it) and as long as it's not sticky after it shouldn't leave a mark. If you have gotten a cloudy area clean it as fast as possible, the more you heat it the harder it getts to remove. Metal scraper is a must then something that really cleans well like vinegar and baking soda, some fat natural cleaning soap (might leave a fat residue that needs some dish soap or cleaning sprayto get rid of) or in really bad cases oven cleaner, let the productdo their job at softening the grime, just scrubbing emediatly will not work. If its allowed to sit for long it will be much harder to get rid of but just be thorough and more than you think will come of.

The answer is, kind of, but not for long. If you are seasoning your cast iron pan regularly then that means the oil will bleed into your glass top eventually once heated and will leave residue every time. If you want to clean your stove even more than usual every time, that's tour choice. Not to mention the glass stove messes up seasoning on pan bottom each time

@jdgower13 жыл бұрын
@@castIroncookware That may be true, but I think a lot of the warnings about using cast iron on glass tops is born of the absolutest 'bubble-wrap' society we seem to exist in today. Basically, just don't slam your stuff down on the stove, and the glass won't care if it's cast iron, aluminum, Stainless, or anything else. It's not like there's a chemical reaction there that can identify cast iron and go into immediate FAIL mode or anything.

As far as the "seasoning" on the eyes. If you clean your cooktop properly, it won't build up. Keep a spray bottle of window cleaner for cleaning up grease, and the polish type for anything cooked on. put it on, and wipe it off with a dry paper towel, and it'll come right off. If anything does get really cooked on where that won't bring it off, there is a long razorblade tool for scraping (carefully!) the buildup. My mom has been using her glasstop Jennair for at least as long as you had your cooktop, and hers still looks brand new. And yes, she uses CI on it.
