So, I have a story to share about this movie. This is probably my single favorite movie ever, and I wanted to share it with my girlfriend. She was a long-distance girlfriend, so I had to drive maybe 4 hours to visit her. We spent the day together and near the end, we watched Castle in the Sky together. I head off down the road (it's about 2 in the morning at this point) and I tune into the radio to keep awake on a lonely late-night California highway drive home. I thought I was nuts, but as soon as I tuned into a station, I heard that beautiful orchestral music. Turns out it was a BBC America radio story about Castle in the Sky. It was really special to hear the story about the making of this movie, and really capped the night for me. Really wish I could find that radio piece again!

Laputa and Totoro were my childhood as well, I first watched it 20 odd years ago. I watched it again recently and I now understand the themes and the ideas that Miyazaki was trying to get across through this movie. I think I should revisit other movies I used to watch as a kid and see what kind of new things I will discover.

So, I'm British (Welsh actually) so my interactions with the Ghibli films up until this year was fairly minimal. I knew they existed, I knew that they were meant to be brilliant and that they were essentially one of the main things that people in my area that I know of thought of in terms of anime in general. So I was a little skeptical. They can't be that good, I thought. My interaction with Miyzaki was better, but not by much. I'd seen Castle of Cagliostro, and while I'd certainly found it....well, brilliant (It introduced me to Lupin III which is something I will be grateful for), I wasn't exactly sure what to expect. So I put this on in August when it was Ghibli month over here, and expected I'd get bored of it pretty quickly. This intro got me into the story near immediately. Especially in contrast to the introductory scene, which was fast paced and exciting, but also quite surprising considering I'd had no real set up for the film in advance. But then that music starts up with a proper orchestra, and the images on the screen look so good even now and AAH I love it! It was something I'd never really seen before in anime, even down to the look of it, the fairytale like qualities of this made me interested to see more of it. I really have this to thank for sticking with Ghibli month, discovering two new favorites (This and Mononoke) COUNTLESS new favorite characters (Nausicca, Lady Eboshi, Lord Yuta, DAMN NEAR EVERYONE IN THIS FILM I LOVE IT) and this intro played a massive part in getting me to sit down, shut up and finally watch it. ...Also the end credits is damn gorgeous as well DAMN YOU CONTINUITY ANNOUNCER FOR TALKING OVER IT. So....yeah. Thanks for giving praise to this, it certainly deserves it.

As a Brit', this film is particularly fun to watch; not just because of how Miyasaki created an entire story and [what feels like a vast] mythos from a single location in a book; but the fact that he and several aquaintances toured the UK [not just the welsh counties] to accrue post-industrial inspiration, which was everywhere in the early 1980's. (rather less evident today, decades on) The most obvious details are the abandoned mine & workshop buildings; reminicent of cornish engine houses, and the valley Pazu lives in, which bares some similarity to parts of the welsh & scot's counties... albeit on a larger scale and with a more cratered landscape than any we have XD.

Laputa is actually pronounced la-pyu-ta as according to the katakana (ラーピュータ: ra-pyu-ta). This is an excellent analysis of the OP! I only watched it once which is when I watched the film so I never comprehended the entire meaning of the OP, but seeing how you break it down makes it very clear. The OP is definitely very lovely and even when I didn't understand it, it was so enjoyable to look at.

My god a I remember the first time I saw that sequence, breathtaking and hypnotic at the same time. Not that the rest of the movie falls any shorter but you can see how the movie tells an adventure story of a particular time of an specific group of people. The intro manages to tell the story of an entire civilization through millenia and talk about the nature of humanity as a whole...all of that in just a couple of minutes before the movie has even started. Thanks Geoff, you just made me wanna watch this movie again and I left it at my other house.

Master of the lyokian monsters I’m sorry, I haven’t seen someone comment, “first”, on a video since, oh about 2007 or 8 now. It’s like a walking fossil. If that fossil was 14 or younger.

I also think it tied into the film better, at least foreshadowing plot points and themes.

Wooo, great to see maybe my favorite op of all time covered. I do like the new format and like the idea of covering some ops that are great but maybe don’t have enough stuff to talk about for as long. Would be nice to see talk of stuff that are more interesting from their style and tonal/thematic Implication but have less story stuff happening (stuff like Cowboy Bebop or to stick to 80s movies Wings of Honneamise).

Hey, my I suggest an series for you to do a "what's in an OP" video about? I know it's not technically an anime, but would love to see an analysis of the RWBY openings. I have yet to see an adequately thorough analysis on KZbin and you seem to be one of the only people qualified to do it! I know that the openings are rather short but I would not mind a single video about multiple theme songs. I just know those theme songs have a deeper meaning to them and you seem to be the man we need to uncover that meaning!

I really appreciate this, it put words to the many feelings stirred by the film when I first saw it. That idea of living with nature rather than carelessly exploiting it is deeply important now.

Good video as always! I was wondering if you were interested in making a video about shows that are spoiled through openings, if that is good bad. And not talking like foreshadowing, but spoilers that are reveals or fundamental in writing and are spoiled in an opening.

This is a lovely video! I hope youtube doesn't completely screw you over since you're using Ghibli clips/music. My Neighbor Totoro was always the Ghibli movie special to me as a little kid (especially because the two sisters' relationship mirrored my own little sister and I) but Lauta has one of the most gorgeous Ghibli opening credits sequences.
