To be honest, Castlevania was stuck in development hell for *YEARS* and most of Season 1 is what Netflix was able to salvage from the various studios it was shuffled to which is the reason for the varying quality of animation. And was originally meant to be a 90-100 minute movie. I expect Season 2 to an actual SERIES now that it's got a solid ground to stand on

NotAGoodUsername360 You are only partially right. He tried getting it going, but no one would take the project, so he could never make it for years. He then went to Netflix who was like "I don't know... video game movie? How about we make it a series and the first season will be a test run with a low budget. If it has good reception, you can make more with a better budget." He then made it into a series, while also cutting down on things deemed unnessesary, like Grant Danasty from Castlevania 3. Netflix only gave him 4 episodes for the first season, and after it received high reception, he was greenlit for a second season with 8 episodes and a higher budget within a week of release, so the next season may finish Castlevania 3, and it'll not have occasionally spotty animation. The budget was the reason for the animation's varying quality of animation, not development Hell. Although, he did try getting it off the ground for years, having made an entire script while trying to get it greenlit, while also editing it as time passed to refine it as much as possible. In the end, it was a passion project of his, and he was lucky enough to succeed in making it, while also having it be a hit.

To be fair, Brotherhood's got a lotta flaws early in terms of pacing and how it gives the viewers information (due to the seeming assumption that all viewers had read the manga or at least seen the original anime), but you're not wrong about animation when it comes to the fights. In that Allucard vs Trevor fight I was thinking "is this Bones? It totally seems like Bones." (the animation studio)

I think the series was great i was disappointed when it was only 4 episodes but they were just set up for what is to come for what ever reason I got a kind of Jon snow vice from Trevor I don't know why and I don't think this series if following the lords of shadow chronologically rather the original castlevaina timeline chronologically I also like how the impulmented some of the platforming gameplay intothe series like whenever Trevor and the speaker fell into the room with the gears and they had to jump to them to get out the whole thing was great the only issue is how short it was but that won't be an issue whenever we get more episodes I hope we get further through the bellmont bloodline through out the series like having a season on Simon belmont then a season on richard belmont going up to symphony of the night

Yeah, I left the show feeling the same. Really interested, but wanted more. Especially from Dracula's side. I feel like they played it safe for Season 1 and probably for the better. Animation is hella expensive and time consuming, so I can see why Netflix would hold off and gauge interest with a small amount of episodes for people to decide if they want more or not. The animation was really good too. I was digging the atmosphere and color usage in certain scenes.

Just caught all four episodes, and what I saw was pure brilliance in a Castlevania adaptation to animation. The only thing that was missing, and it is a big thing, is the music. When we see Dracula's castle rising from the shadows, we should be hearing pipe organs man! Hopefully this improves in the second season, but it goes to show how good these episodes are at their core. My only other concern is how long can they keep it going. Dracula's hellish army and Trevor doing the deed because no one else is around to step up can only go so far. I can see Dracula being taken down sometime in the next season, and the following season doesn't have him at all, and do something similar to Simon's quest, or even feature Simon himself (love Trevor though!). They could have Dracula resurrected in an epic cliffhanger into another season after that, and everyone fucking cheers that he's back! yup

Here's an experiment to show how well oral history works: play a game of normal telephone then play a game of telephone where the listener must repeat the phrase to the speaker before passing it on to make sure they heard it right. Pretty ethnocentric to write off oral history without understanding how it's passed along.

Oral traditions are extremely meticulous and those who would pass down the stories and histories would be trained and study the stories their whole lives. It's ridiculous to compare that to hearing something whispered in your ear one time

@@rstueckle I think he is comparing it to written history, and giving a very basic and quick example that human bias and imperfection will eventually distort any story since an oral story is bottle-necked by the speaker's memory and mortality. Even written things can be distorted over time (granted, to a lower degree) as the language grows and changes, this is why we see so many different sects of Christianity.

But the 8 extra episodes makes it up to 12 total, which can give a really good watch (see Tokyo ghoul, my hero academia, and overlord to see how 12 episodes that are about 20 mins long can make really well paced stories)

Why do people want 20 episodes??? Why? 4 episodes is pretty short (due to testing out the series), but a lot of anime and shows even that have 20 episodes per season have horrible pacing. Also, I feel like they would have to rush to get all those episodes, reducing the animation quality.

I actually went into Voltron after watching Troll Hunters (and loving it), and I was really disappointed. I don't mind watching shows meant for kids, but Voltron was just way too kiddish, in the sense that every little thing was layed out and explained and the characters were just too tropey. Still, it was quality animation.

Amit Patel true true. They could also go with a more phsycological route (on link's part). I mean, it must be hard to change bodies all the time. There's the dissociation(?) aspect, and then we can tell from the cutscenes when he puts on a mask that it hurts physically as well. Not to mention the pain and lonliness he must feel for losing navi, and being in a strange land where he doesn't know anyone.

I absolutely loved this little series and want a lot more. I enjoyed the fact that the fight scenes aren't super flashy and are comparably pretty slow when put next to other shows like this. It makes the blows have some impact. I also love how nice the whip crack is whenever he uses it. I hope to see more soon.

Reminds me a lot of HBO's Spawn, both good and bad. The Good: We see set up and character development. Dracula, Lisa, the clergy its cool that we can see them develop. The Bad: Like Spawn, I fear it will get too hung up on its mythology. The future tech with monsters, like electric lights and a golem, wave a red flag. This feels like a prologue and the first 3 episode of a 13 episode season. So hopefully it won't be long

I think it was a smart idea to do it based off castlevania 3, because action anime are better with an ensemble cast and in castlevania three you switch between 3 characters (maybe 4 but I haven't played it in a long time). So it has a pretty good chance for a supporting cast

The four episodes we got really feel like they should have been called "Prelude to Season 1" rather than "Season 1." I wish it had been paced faster, too. It felt like everything we saw could have happened in 2 episodes if they cut a lot of the extra chit-chat and the trivial scenes like the barfight or falling into the catacombs weren't so long and drawn-out. From there, Episodes 3 and 4 should have been the heroes and townsfolk fighting off a massive demon invasion, buying time before Dracula's next assault and the heroes beginning their journey to Castle Dracula. Or even ending with the heroes passing through the castle's main entrance.

Personally I thought it was great. My only real complaint was how short it was, it left me wanting more. Richard Armitage was awesome as Trevor Belmont, his sense Of humor was spot on and Graham McTavish was great as Dracula, I do think it might have benefitted from more of him. The good news is Season 2 will be twice as long (Eight episodes still probably won't be long enough) and Did I mention this show REALLY impressed me, can't wait for season 2.

This was a solid start for something I had minimal expectations for. Voice acting was good, animation during action scenes was stellar, and I thought the characters were enjoyable. That said, I felt as though the facial animations were flat. You'd have instances where Belmont is roaring in anger but his face is flat as fuck. For some that may be a minor gripe, but for me it was enough to keep s1 of Netflix's Castlevania from being an 8/10. It's a solid 7/10 in my book.

Have you read the manga? If you liked the film I'm sure you'll find it at least interesting. The story in the film is just an arc, but more expanded and daker. Each volume is a story like this one with D as a protagonist.

Honestly I kind of liked the fact that they didn't show Dracula after episode 1. I totally agree that I wanted to see more of him, but by keeping his screen time to a minimum for now will hopefully create a greater build up for when the protagonists finally face him. The Trevor vs Alucard fight scene was just amazing. The way Trevor moves with the whip was some awesome animation. The dialogue were so good in this series too. The compelling story is what drawn me in beside the fact that I was already a fan of the game. This may look like Japanese anime but it's not Japanese anime. Also this is not for kids, something that I really appreciated. If only Disney can take this example and apply it to their Spider-man animation. Not the violence, I'm talking about the maturity of the show. Not everything have to be 4th grade level story telling and selling toys.

Yeah it seems like there's a lot of potential in this show. What I also like to see in season 2 is focus more on alucard on why he sided with the humans. What is his relationship with his mother like that make him think his kind is the enemy? Enough to make him want to kill his own father even. That perspective would be interesting too.

I think the answer is pretty simple. He's strongly influenced by his mother who always believed in humanity and their potential to do good. In the end, the only reason she wandered into Dracula's castle was to learn medical arts to help those around her. Unlike his father who lost himself to grief and lost all hope in humanity, Alucard still believes human race to be worth saving. And since his father won't listen to reason... He has only one option left.
