I have completely stopped giving a shit if my initial interactions are awkward. One time I approached a circle of people and just asked if I could be invited to the conversation. I was a weirdo, sure, but people appreciated that I was friendly and wanted to talk anyway. I eventually made friends with a few of those people through mutual shared interests. Nobody cares if your awkward. It's obvious that you're a little goofy, but it doesn't matter, and it's not worth hiding in the first place. Most people don't analyze social situations like that, and they just want to get to know the new guy. Matter of fact, 'social' people get away with socially unacceptable shit all the time, simply because they don't care. They're viewed as 'cool' because they break all the rules, but they aren't even aware there were rules in the first place. That's why alcohol is such a great social lubricant. You stop thinking about interactions so hard. It makes you just reckless enough to not care if now is the time to jump into the conversation with your thoughts. Even worse, your fear of being judged can be confused for arrogance. Usually that's what happens to people who avoid everyone. Nobody puts together that the guy hiding in the corner has social anxiety. They just think that guy hates everyone. You can ester be a little weird up front, or you can be viewed as arrogant. Pick one.

When I lived in Brazil things were so much easier you can literally walk down the street or go to the park and talk to anyone. Here in the u.s where I live, people look at you like you're crazy for trying to start a conversation and some even seem annoyed !! Ppl will give u dirty looks for saying good morning. I never felt anxiety talking to people in Brazil. But here I feel so scared I'm going to annoy someone.

Only step you’ll ever need is to be yourself because if people like you as yourself then the friendship will be real. If you try to act differently they will sniff it out and it will be awkward for everyone. Even if you are weird there’s always someone out there who will like you for who you are.
