I always knew that part of it, but I almost wonder if they have a similar sort of predicament with the "Ms. Marvel" name, too, because there was a period in the late 80's/ early 90's where Carol was under another identity (pre-Captain) and a character named Sharon Ventura held the title as a wrestler-turned-woman version of The Thing (sometimes known as She-Thing).

@@b.parker1740 You sorta do for every trademark you own. You have to actively use it and defend it, otherwise if someone challenge your claim you might lose it. The main difference is that with Captain Marvel, Marvel knows there is/was someone gunning for it actively(ish), so they didn't wanna get sloppy with it at all. With a trademark that is being gunned less by others or not at all, the mare minimum is enough (you're just keeping it alive, you can't be accused of not defending it if there isn't much to defend from, the defense clause is more reactionary).

I suspect the invention of the current Ms. Marvel was partly due to needing someone to carry the trademark. It's something Marvel has done before. Carol becomes Captain Marvel to maintain that trademark. They create a new Ms. Marvel to maintain that trademark.

@@1monki Honestly, that is one you can be pretty sure of it. Her only connection to "Ms. Marvel" is being a fan of Carol and debuted on Captain Marvel's book, but now you don't really see Carol (at least not on the avengers or her own book) even mention Kamala. Also just line up too well for Marvel's trade mark renewal. I think the creators had ideas of their own too, but there is no way with all of these things lined up like that didn't have an editorial touch. And if they're involved, they're thinking of that too, it is part of their job.

@@louisvictor3473 There is some crossovers. They have appeared in each other's comics. But it's not a super tight connection. Which is pretty typical for marvel. Spider-Woman was also created for copyright and trademark reasons. Historically she has no connection to Peter Parker or Spider-Man. She-Hulk has more of a connection to the Hulk. But they are very different and separate characters most of the time.

I remember once reading an issue of one of the Spider-man comics where Spidey was thinking about how he could use pockets on his costume. A problem with that would be the fact that he would sometimes be upside down -- such as when he is crawling down the walls -- and things would fall out. So he would something to keep them close, like zippers or velcro. The problem with THAT was that if he was sneaking up on someone, and had to get something out of a pocket, the sound of the velcro ripping apart would alert the person. In the end, he imagined a mother explaining to their child how Spider-man died because of a velcro pocket, and the child commenting on how it was a stupid way to die.

What made me scream was that Hickman created a new Black Female character to be Captain Universe during his Avengers run. I just thought why not use former Captain Marvel Monica Rambeau? Making her another type of "Captain" would have made sense and brought Monica back to the forefront.

For what it's worth, I find it easier to just refer to the various Captains Marvel by their "secret identity" names (Carol Danvers, Monica Rambeau, Billy Batson etc.), especially with people who are into comics. Not only have almost all of them gone by another codename at some point or another, but it can also sidestep the whole argument over who should be *the* Captain Marvel.

I finally got to see this video. Monica Rambeau was a favorite of mine when she was given royal treatment by Roger Stern in Avengers. You could tell he loved the character as she was front and centre in his stories.

Given how the MCU really has so little time to introduce characters and the need to keep origin stories from being generic, I think both the MCU and Marvel comics did a good job introduction Monica. The MCU still does not have all of Monica's origin revealed and it gives us a chance to discover her and grow with her. I have a feeling that Monica's powers in part are due to the incident that has produced such a bad taste for Carol Danvers in S.W.O.R.D., maybe the same incident gave Monica's mother cancer and so everyone blames Captain Marvel which could lead to an interesting redemption story for both Carol and Monica.

It would be like Marvel nicknaming Wolverine "Green Lantern." If Green Lantern's so awesome, maybe they should be reading Green Lantern instead. They're just giving their competitor free advertising. And confusing their readers, some of whom they hope will be kids, what's going to be in a book with that character name. It's understandable.

@Will N They dropped the "original..." in the 70s because they didn't want to get sued. Billy hasn't headed a book called Captain Marvel in the lifetimes of most comics readers today. It's so past time to let this go. DC did a while back. I'm sure your love is for the character, not the name. You still get the character. You're even getting some well-produced movie content for the character. Maybe focus more on the wins rather than what Fawcett called him in the 50s.

The problem is having a book called Captain Marvel... which is silly, Superman and Batman are more known for their books not named after themselves, and CM himself at the height of his first popularity sold about as many Marvel Family and Whizz comics (the original publication, arguably the main publication) as Captain Marvel Adventures - no need to have the name of the book be the name of the character, it is like DC is run by incompetent marketers. No, wait, it is not _like_ they are, they just are.

Marvel is a word in the English language, Marvel Comics doesn't have monopoly over it. And Captain is just a stable comic book character name part. It is a historical staple of the medium for decades. And it is not like comic book hero names were ever trying to be "accurate" descriptions, because they're not descriptions. That is why Daredevil isn't a demon, Spider-man isn't a spider and human hybrid, neither is Batman a bat hybrid, Superman isn't a man (as in man(kind), a human), Lobo isn't a Spanish speaking wolf or wolf of any kind, Cyclops has 2 eyes, Wolverine doesn't even dress with the motif of his namesake, Dr. Light (the first) isn't a doctor; and more important none of the following are actual Captains: Captain Cold, Captain Boomerang, several versions of Captain American, Captain Britain (at least not on his debut, no idea later), Captain Marvel (Monica - she was a cargo ship captain at some point, honestly, doesn't count), the original Captain Atom, Captain Universe, and this is just a short list of popular and iconic ones that aren't and won't ever get renamed just because "not actual captains". Seriously, that argument is so bad and ignore pretty much the entirety of superhero comics history. It is just cheap rationalization, never do it again.

@@Mecharnie_Dobbs Marvel Comics owns the Captain Marvel trademark, not the name. This simply means that DC can call him Captain Marvel inside the comic per his copyright; what they cannot do is use that term as the title of his comic or otherwise promote Captain Marvel under that term.

I think the way she was introduced into the MCU feels less forced than this origin story. They went with the current Captain Marvel but didn't ignore Monica. Since she's had multiple aliases they can still use her character and they don't have to shoe horn the name in. Although I don't recall Carol Danvers being referred to as Captain Marvel by any characters in the films until "Spider-Man Far From Home" so I'm not sure how Peter knew to call her that.

I feel like the MCU is fairly loose with when/if they actually refer to the characters by their superhero names. Like, I can't remember off the top of my head whether they ever refer to Nat or Clint as 'Black Widow' or 'Hawkeye,' respectively. We just know that's who they are. That's part of why I thought it was a little odd when they made such a big deal about the Scarlet Witch moniker in _WandaVision._ I'd been under the impression that everyone already knew that Wanda was Scarlet Witch.

It's been ages since I've watched one of Sasha's videos because of exams but there's just something with her "commenting and explaining" Comics that puts a smile on my face and makes me laugh

I really like the tone Sasha sets for her videos. She shares her opinions, but she doesn't rant endlessly when something ticks her off (which I'm sure happens on occasion). I've stopped watching basically every other comics channel, because I got tired of watching videos where people are either lecturing you or yelling at you (if not both) about something that happened in a work of fiction. Sasha keeps things casual in a way that isn't superficial but also doesn't make the events of a comic book feel like a real-life catastrophe.

Truthfully you can feel that this is something she's passionate about and that sharing her views on various topics makes her happy if I'm being honest she's better that a majority of the other channels that talk about comivs on KZbin, her style is her own, there's the witty comments(honestly my favorite part of her videos) and she stays true to her character in all of her content Sasha in her first video is the same Sasha in her latest video.

@@badbrad3213 Yup! And from a technical standpoint, I really appreciate that her videos aren't over-produced. Each video feels like it's as long as it needs to be and focuses on the topic without adding extraneous fluff. Overall, Casually Comics is great!

Thanks for sharing this! I remember the character from old Avengers comics in my childhood, but didn't remember who she was. To be fair, there were a lot of characters who I couldn't identify, but she really stands out. What a great video!

Having recently reread this issue myself, I was surprised at how closely Monica's origin story followed that of Cloak & Dagger in their TV show--right down to the New Orleans-based Roxxon oil rig mining a mysterious energy source. It's interesting that so few people seem to acknowledge this, and I wonder how much that figured into Monica's new origin in WandaVision.

@@Nocturne22 people already complain about Carol Danvers being too PC, I can't imagine how much whining there would have been if the MCU Captain Marvel had been Monica. Especially from people that act like they know comics but really don't. On a side note, I have to "um, actually" you a bit here but, Carol Danvers was created years and years before Monica. She didn't become Captain Marvel until later but Carol Danvers has been around since the 70s.

When I first started reading the Avengers as a kid it was right around the time Monica joined so I have always had a soft spot for her. She was really the first Captain Marvel I had ever read about. It was a shame that when Roger Stern left the book the latter writers had no interest in the character and let her fall into limbo for so long. She really was a great member of the team.

In fact, when people are discussing Captain Marvel, without fail my brain will think of him first, regardless if the conversation is Marvel centric. I was a big fan of Mar-Vell, so I kind of resented Monica when she first showed up. "How come she gets to join the Avengers right away, and Mar-Vell never did???" But Roger Stern wrote her really well, and I warmed up to her eventually. And I really loved her in "NextWave", but I dunno if that even counts as canon anymore...
