This was awesome! What a fun (tragic?) way to incorporate Rhys into the plot! Loved (hated?) the alien plot line as well!

The way I interpreted it, the way Jack keeps looking at Gwen and Rhys is that he's envious of their love life, something he can't have anymore because of his immortality

That's part of it. At this point in the story, and certainly the way Jack reacts when he sees her with the engagement ring would indicate he has real feelings for Gwen. He's omnisexual, not gay. He likes everybody. But he definitely has a thing for Gwen, which, keep watching, you'll see where that goes. No spoilers. There is some jealousy there for sure because he likes Gwen too.

Another great episode that justifies Torchwood's existence as a way to tell stories that are too dark for DW

I have a soft spot for these sort of "secret revealed" episodes - when a cast member that doesn't know a secret learns the secret, it's just one of my favourite tropes in TV

Fun fact from a British person, this episode aired and a few years later: a massive scandal was uncovered where horse meat was being used in a load of our food products - I’m surprised that us Brits don’t talk about the horse meant scandal that much today.

It’s amazing how much we forget - then again, lots of crazy stuff these days! That’s the most believable thing in recent UK history xD

Honestly, I only had two issues with the whole horse meat thing (for context, I also live in the UK) - First, they didn't tell us, which isn't ok, and Second, I expect that horse meat isn't (or wasn't at the time, no idea about now) subject to the same food standards as cow and other meats. If I knew it was horse that I was eating and that proper food standards were applied I don't think I'd be mad about it if it tasted good. And let's be honest, so much insane stuff has happened in the UK since then that it's the least of our worries now.

I like the idea of the team finally encountering aliens that were not the villains or monsters. Wish there more stories where they helped the aliens... and for fudge sakes, find some way other than solitary confinement to keep your prisoners, Jack!

Oh for sure! I think that's part of why I like the Sarah Jane Adventures so much, since it shows us that Aliens, good or bad, are just living beings like the rest of us, and we should help them or fight them accordingly based on their actions. Torchwood doesn't play with that idea as much, but when it does it's great! Well, that and the fact I was like 8-12 years old when these shows were airing. Thankfully I didn't see Torchwood until I was a little older, like 12-14, otherwise it probably would have scarred me, and 12-14 was realistically still a bit young for it!

Its not the weight of Torchwood. Remember, this is his past, even if the details are lost to history. He has the weight of all the future on his shoulders. With the details lost, everything he does is a minefield of unknown history. Do the wrong thing, screw it up. All he knows is that this is the century everything comes apart. Jack is a shadow of The Doctor, and he needs as many rules so he can be a better man.

To lighten things a bit after this excellent episode, it puts me in mind of my favourite ever tabloid newspaper headline. It was a good few days into the Great British Horsemeat Scandal of 2013 when we found out that many of our meat products were not what they said on the tin, but had a distinct equine tinge. Still, when I read the headline "QUEEN EATS HORSE" I didn't picture a tin opener in her hands, but a knife and fork, and a bib tucked in below her chin...

The heavy sigh by Captain Jack Harkness at the end, it's got to be that he has been through this very thing many many many times over the centuries, where someone outside of Torchwood learns about it, and his look, to me, says it's not a good idea letting someone know that they work for Torchwood and what goes on there, that it usually ends badly. Let's find out together if this ends badly this time.

That quarrel scene with Gwen and Rhys is one of the best and most realistic acting I've ever seen. Like, this is how real people quarrel. When we watched that the first time, it really took our breath away. To this day my whole family quotes whenever one tries bullshitting the other: "Aliens! ... in C A R D I F F ?!" BTW, that's not just about whether Aliens exist or not necessarily, but because of her statement that there's a need to have an Alien Fighting Force in such a random, small, sweet, and, the Welsh may forgive me, assumingly backwater city like Cardiff, when everyone knows that big things only ever happen in London. 😀 That said, we've met Kai Owen on conventions on multiple occasions, and he's such a sweet guy to talk to. If you ever got the chance, please do so. And Eve is like a tornado (especially on cons in combo with Barrowman). The whole TW crew is just full of first class actors, but Eve and Kai are the perfect couple to each other.

Another fantastic, powerful episode. This series…there’s just nothing else like it out there. Regarding Jack’s feelings toward Gwen and Rhys, I always assumed that Jack felt a bit jealous of what they have. He can’t die…so how could he ever truly have that “normal” side of life. Just my take.

I am surprised that you have to ask about Jack's thoughts. we all know that there's something between him and Gwen. we don't like it, but it's there. he facies her, she fancies him - it's just never addressed. simple as that. oh, and the fact that having Rhys remember means another outsider that could get hurt because of them or blame them if anything happens to Gwen, so typical manager ish :D

Honestly, I had no idea what Jack's expression meant either. I thought maybe he decided to retcon Rhys and Gwen after all. But perhaps it's just loneliness and envy a bit.

I still hate that Rhys hasn’t found out about her cheating so he could actually choose if he wants to be with her or not and she never had any real consequences for it but her guilt, plus the fact that she’s clearly also in love with Jack and makes it very clear that she’d rather be with him than Rhys and then lies to Rhys about how he’s the only one she finds handsome, he deserves better than this

I think the showrunners of doc who and torchwood early on really enjoyed - female lead cheating on/fancying people thing - between Gwen and Rose… jesus… rhys, owen, jack, mickey, annoying boy from dalek/longgame, jack again, the doctor, when the characters become more consistent and build stronger relationships its more entertaining/enjoyable

Yeah, the weird relationship dynamics didn't click with me either. Like, the cheating thing between Gwen and Owen at least had a reason from a story perspective, and made sense in that moment. But overall, it doesn't really add to the plot, or character development imo.
