I also love how in that episode, the Augar doesn't hesitate to say "Gallifrey" to the Doctor because the Pyrovilies would know of the Time Lords. Still, the Augar hesitates with Donna because not only is she out of her time, but her home, London, was known back then as "Londinium." Hence, the Pyroviles had to scan the whole timeline in the span of that hesitation & The History to find this episode's timeline to draw their information on.

I love that they mention the Beetle thing is one of the Trickster's brigade. Just a little Sarah Jane reference thrown in for the people who know The performances in this episode are brilliant. Bernard Cribbins breaking our hearts. The fortune teller was Chan Tho back in Utopia. This obviously was filmed alongside Midnight pretty much, giving both Catherine Tate and David Tennant real chances to shine

Yes, they used to do these double banking episodes (like "Love and Monsters" and "Blink") to film two at once and help with the production schedule. This is the first time they split the Doctor and companion up and had them each have their own to accomplish this, and it led to two brilliant episodes.

22:05 CLASSIC WHO CALL BACK - THE CLOISTER BELL : The TARDIS can sense its lifespan to some extent. When it senses imminent destruction in its own future or destruction of the universe itself, The Cloister Bell starts ringing. It does not do it often. Major Alien invasions do not cut it. Only real danger to the the fabric of space and time as a whole set it off.

14:45 I think Jacqui Kings performance here is just amazing, Sylvia at her lowest low. It’s is such an honest depiction of depression I’ve seen in any programme it really strikes a chord. I don’t think she’s being mean to Donna specifically, she’s just lost the will to bother caring about anything.

Cribbins was already the UK's TV Granddad for more than one generation, Im not the first to grow up with his voice. So getting into the show now cements that even more. When he gets upset, we all get upset!!

FWIW I think that it was the Tardis changing everything around them to read Bad Wolf as they were on an alien planet so the language translation software overwrote everything in the immediate vicinity to immediately put the Doctor on red alert that something MAJOR was about to go down. The Tardis and Rose are so interconnected via her staring into its heart that I think it immediately fed off Rose’s message to Donna which is why it was also red on the inside.

I actually think this is the darkest episode in the entire modern run of Doctor Who. Just the sheer scale of how everything gets progressively worse without Donna even knowing where to start fighting it, killing off every single supporting protagonist within reach starting with the children, and then managing to get the "labour camps" scene on top of that. Nothing's ever really surpassed it in terms of being heavy.
@karabelle221
@karabelle221 7 күн бұрын
I’m not sure if someone has already mentioned this to you, but the “doctor-lite” episodes come from a production standpoint, as during the first few seasons there was no other way for filming to be completed in the time allotted. “Doctor-lite” episodes also include Father’s Day in season 1, Love and Monsters in season 2, Blink in season 3, in addition to this one and a few in the future that I won’t mention. There are also “companion-lite” episodes, for the same purposes, sometimes combined with the doctor-lite episodes, like Blink, and sometimes separate, like Midnight. I just think it’s really interesting how some of the best writing (in my opinion) can come from logistical issues!

This may be one of my favorite season 4 episodes. It really sums up why I love and relate to Donna, as you get a deeper view into how she sees herself and why she is always shouting at the world. I grew up feeling useless too, overshadowed by highly successful siblings, always feeling like a failure. I developed a disguise of being strong, aggressive, and invulnerable to try to protect my heart. Sadly, the Doctor never came to teach me that I was special, but Donna's story really hits my soul very deeply.

This was also the episode I was referring to in my comment on _Forest of the Dead_ , where I said Catherine Tate's acting really stood out. That she, along with Billie Piper, Bernard Cribbins, and a gripping story, could turn a Doctor-lite episode into one of the best of the season deserves considerable respect.

Fun fact: the first hint outside of Donna's life, as to how the timeline changed is just before we learn the Doctor is dead; the tank that shoots down the Racnoss, we don't hear the radio broadcast saying that it was orders from Mr Saxon; because with the Doctor dead, the Master never returned and died at the end of the universe. That the Thames was still drained in the Turn Left timeline suggests to me that the Master restored it, either for publicity, or just because he had to hang around london for his political career and it was inconveniencing him.

I believe the first time the cloister bell rang in New Who was in "Born Again"/The 2005 Children in Need special, although only in its original broadcast and not in the version you most commonly see (if you didn't know, the version of Born Again on the DVD release is, for some reason, a rough cut that has unfinished audio and music, including lacking the cloister bell sound). I think it was also heard before in "The Sound of Drums" when the TARDIS is seen in its Paradox Machine form and in "Time Crash".

Do glad you put in those editors bits because ir gets so frustrating screaming that at other reactors who miss that point. Especially given that is the key premise of this episode.

Reason the Doctor died in the other timeline Donna was in is because he drowned. She got him to leave after his annihilation of the Racnoss children, when you see the scene in Runaway Bride he just stands there until she snaps him out of it, he's all angry and broken without Rose so he would've died, and so he did here.

These days I avoid the "Next time" trailer, but the one at the end of this episode - the very best. 😊

So I've just been introduced to your channel thanks to Doctor who and I love how in to the show you are. Do you plan on watching classic who in the future? I feel honestly you'd love that.

I’m not committing to the entirety just now, but I do plan to take a tour of classic who (one-ish story from each doctor) to coincide with series 7 after I finish the spin-offs. We’ll see how I feel about it!

@CasualNerdReactions That's so cool the great thing about classic is that you can just jump in to any era really as most stories can run as there own stand alone essentially and you don't need to worry too much on what happened before.
