This is my first Wes Anderson film and I gotta say, I liked it. A very photographic quality to the way he sets up his shots, and I found the storytelling to be very compelling-- but the music is what catapulted this film to greatness in my opinion. I hope you enjoyed my The Grand Budapest Hotel movie reaction & commentary

This one's my favorite Anderson, but also very enjoyable is "The Life Aquatic With Steve Zisseu", and, I forget, did he do "The Royal Tannenbaums" too? It seems to have a similar vibe.

One if my favourite Anderson films… with that confession of yours right at the beginning, I gave to recommend my absolute favourite Anderson film, The Fantastic Mr. Fox! It’s actually the movie I use to introduce people to his films, sort of ease them into it.

This is my favorite one followed by Moonrise Kingdom, Royal Tennenbaums and Life Aquatic. All great storylines with fantastic character interaction and beautiful filming and production. Since you enjoyed this, expect you will also enjoy other Wes movies. A significant number of actors are in multiple movies in lead, supporting or cameo roles. Just a few are Jeff Goldblum Bill Murray and Owen Wilson but the list is larger.

loved it. It somehow mixes the feeling of a screwball comedy of the 30s and the stories of Stefan Zweig - and not just because of a common trope in his short stories where the narrator is not the main character, we're reading the account of someone who met someone and then was told their whole life story, but also just...well the feeling of it. Especially the feeling of Zweig once you look him up and find out a bit more about him - he was one of the lucky ones who managed to get out of Europe in time but.... So far though the only other movie adaptation I can think of of his works is 'Letter From An Unknown Woman'.

I think it's Wes Anderson's best movie, but it's not my favorite. My favorite is Moonrise Kingdom. I also am a big fan of his earlier movies like Bottle Rocket, Rushmore, The Royal Tenenbaums, and The Life Aquatic with Steve Zissou (Bill Murray's best movie), all of which were a bit more raw but still unmistakably Wes Anderson. Asteroid City last year was also quite good.

This movie is enchanting in so many ways. It exposes us to a certain elegance in style, behavior, and language, that has long disappeared, interspersed with moments of absurdity and crassness. Delightful. This movie is a joy to watch.

And the random use of vulgarity in an otherwise wholesome film is what makes this even more hilarious. Adrian Brody's passionate "what's the meaning of THIS shit?!" gets me EVERY time 😂

@@sydhamelin1265 the French dispatch. I found it boring with little comedy and maybe because it’s a collection of mini stories, you don’t have the time to really fall in love with the characters the way you do with the other movies.

I do love Wes Anderson, this is one of my fav movies of all time. All of his movies are good, most of them are great. You can go back and watch all his movies in order and that'd be great, otherwise I'd say go back to The Royal Tenenbaums (his third film) which to me was where his style really came into focus. Another excellent cast in that one too.

LOVE this movie, and Wes Anderson definitely has a very unique and beautiful cinematic style. My personal favorite is The French Dispatch, but The Royal Tenenbaums, The Darjeeling Limited, Rushmore, and Moonrise Kingdom are also really great movies. His latest, Asteroid City, looks like something out of a postcard, which is what I love about his movies. They're quirky and fantastical, like a diorama come to life.

The Grand Budapest's exterior is a detailed large scale model, the interior was an abandoned department store imaginatively redressed to resemble a period European hotel. This is one of the very few films that I wanted to see more than once while it was still in theaters. It's definitely layered and entertaining enough for a rewatch.

It is possible to like some Wes Anderson films a lot more than others. Because his style is so distinctive (and consistent) I've seen some people say that you either love his filmography or dislike it, but I've found that I like some and am bored by others. I knew I would like this one when Ralph Fiennes (you are pronouncing it correctly, to the best of my knowledge) interrupted himself to say, "Oh, f*ck it." on the train. That being said, my favorite of the ones I've seen is Moonrise Kingdom. I rented it on DVD a while ago and ended up watching it every night for a week.

Anderson is another filmmaker who uses many of the same actors in his films. Bill Murray has been in all of them except "Bottle Rocket" and "Asteroid City." Owen Wilson and Jason Schwartzman have also been in the vast majority of them.

I'm catching up on some of your Reaction videos and was so pleased to see this one. I am a huge Wes Anderson buff and "Rushmore" was my first exposure to his work -- I would love to see you do a reaction to that one as well. I've always regarded The Grand Budapest Hotel as Anderson's magnum opus, really, a true confection of a film that is just delightful on so many levels, and bittersweet all the same. Ralph Fiennes should've won the Oscar for his work in this. I had no idea he was so hilarious. Really glad you enjoyed this one as well!

"Don't keep us in suspense, Serge, this has been a complete fucking nightmare! Just tell us what the fuck is going on!" Fun Fact: The fictional Republic of Zubrowka was named after a Polish vodka liqueur named Zubrowka. Hot Take Fact: The scene in which Ludwig (Harvey Keitel) says "Good luck, kid!" before slapping Zero (Tony Revolori) across the face was shot forty-two times until Wes Anderson was satisfied. Keitel actually slapped Revolori each time. Confection Perfection Fact: In an interview, Saoirse Ronan said making the hotel's signature confection, the Courtisane au Chocolat, wasn't easy. Unlike most movies, the food plays an integral part, and required the actual making of a pastry. Music Enthusiast Fact: The soundtrack features a rare instrument; the balalaika, a three-stringed, triangular-shaped Russian folk instrument that was carefully chosen by Wes Anderson. Balalaikas come in various sizes, much like the violin, from prima to contrabass. Several dozen players from France and Russia gathered in Paris to record the soundtrack in Anderson's presence. The instrument is heard throughout the movie, but is most prominent in the second part of the official trailer (down the ski slopes) with the balalaika's most popular theme, The Moon Shines (svetit mesyats).

This is Anderson's best movie in that anyone can enjoy it without being a fan of his work. Stefan Zweig was a romantic of his past, before the fascists of Germany began turning that part of europe into a grey soulless wasteland during the rise of the N@zi party. He had eventually gone into exile to Brazil while it was happening, and when he had heard of what Hitler was doing, his heart broke so hard for what his homeland had become that he committed suicide. His book, The World of Yesterday, is likely the book that inspired this movie as it talked about his youth in Vienna, and the era of artists and dreamers in Austria-Hungary. This was a place where people like Mozart, Beethoven, and Sigmund Freud lived to give an example of the kind of place Vienna was. I highly recommend it, it genuinely gave me Anemoia (a nostalgic sense of longing for a past you yourself have never lived), left wondering what it could have been had the fascist movement hadn't torn apart eastern europe like it did.

The Wes Anderson film that first put him on the map was 'Rushmore' (1998). A great original film but difficult to react to because of the (excellent) musical soundtrack which puts the reactor at risk of getting blocked.
