A masterpiece...by any measure. Arguably Wes Anderson's magnum opus. A tiny side note: The Society of Crossed Keys is actually quite real. Originally founded in France as a loose association of hotel concierges helping one another provide the best possible service...it has since spread worldwide, and is considered a great honor among hospitality workers...the mark of someone who is dedicated to going above and beyond to ensure customer satisfaction. My youngest brother was, for a time, a chef in a highly rated London restaurant, and had associates and acquaintances scattered across the globe. As we are both Anderson movie fans, he told me of the Society as soon as he saw the Chapter heading that referenced them. Far from being secretive, they are simply 'discreet'...but it was the first time I had ever heard of them.

This was one of the first Wes Anderson movies I've seen. I'd strongly recommend Fantastic Mr. Fox and Moonrise Kingdom: all are artful "storybooks" brought to life by all-star ensemble cast doing quirky roles or over-the-top typecasting. This is my favorite movie of all time. Every time I watch it, It instills in me a sense of wonder I haven’t felt since being a young child. Every frame is a painting and the story is charming, sweet, and hilarious. But there’s also some real sense of yearning tucked in there. The theme of memory and time leaving us behind is subtly relayed. This is also Wes Anderson’s most universally beloved movie. It got his most rave reviews and earned his most award nominations of any film that year.

This is one of my top 5 movies, I'm so glad you two are watching it. I make sure to enjoy this film at least once a year, but truthfully, I watch it whenever I feel depressed or sick. This, "The Life Aquatic with Steve Zissou," and "The Life of Pi" are my trinity of feel-good films. Fantastic Mr.Fox is very nearly there, as well. I'd say Gustave is a man who lives by a code of values that were fading by his time and that our modern jadedness has almost entirely snuffed out. He *is* the thin veneer of kind civilization. His "average" behavior is what many people would consider "good" or "great." He gives you a sense of a standard for behavior that you just dont feel from many people, if anyone. He is "Excellence" in human form. Easier to do when you're a made-up chracter, but not impossible, and fully worth aspiring to even if it was.

His recent Roald Dahl shorts for Netflix were absolutely fantastic. You guys should do all of his films, maybe go to Bottle Rocket next, and go in order from there. You'll love Rushmore, The Royal Tenenbaums, and Fantastic Mr Fox, especially. Ralph Fiennes should have won an Oscar for this; had no idea how funny he could be until seeing this. This is my favorite Wes Anderson movie. Some backstory for you, Wes Anderson's first movie, Bottlerocket, was created with his friends from college... Owen and Luke Wilson. As he started making more movies and finding his specific style, there are certain actors who are always in his movies, like Willem Defoe and Bill Murray. Every time Wes Anderson does a movie, he seems to get half of hollywood to play small roles in it. If you enjoyed his style, you are in for a treat. You should start with Bottlerocket and start working your way through all his movies, chronologically.

I'm so so glad you two have finally started your Wes Anderson journey. From the 1970s through the 1990s, director Robert Altman was the artist all actors wanted to work with. His style was unique, clever and always under the radar. Wes is today's Altman, and you'll see a lot of consistency in his casting, particularly those who played key parts in his early career, namely writing partner Owen Wilson, Bill Murray and Jason Schwartzman. My favorite Anderson film. Please continue with the others. Having Zero's beloved’s name be Agatha allows him to inscribe the dedication “from Z to A” in the book of poetry that he gives to her. Later, bilateral, palindromic symmetry is established by a mirror-image bookend when Henkels orders a search to be carried out “from Augenzburg to Zilchbruck.” The name of Jeff Goldblum’s Vilmos Kovacs seems to derive from those of cinematographers Vilmos Zsigmond and László Kovács, just as the name Madame D. could be taken as a Max Ophuls reference. The film also includes what is basically a shot-for-shot remake of a sequence in Alfred Hitchcock's TORN CURTAIN.

I can’t decide which Wes Anderson movie is my favorite. This, Moonrise Kingdom and The Royal Tenenbaums are probably at the top. But then I think, “Oh, but then there’s Rushmore!”

The Royal Tenenbaums, Steve Zissou and Fantastic Mr. Fox are the essential Anderson movies! I hope Tenenbaums will be your next one, as it's the one that really cemented his reputation.

This movie is a GEM, and as usual Fiennes delivers, no matter the role. Not to mention the stellar casting.

One of Anderson's best films - Fiennes' finest hour - a fantastic cavalcade of stars and helluva production design. Such fun!
