A masterpiece...by any measure. Arguably Wes Anderson's magnum opus. A tiny side note: The Society of Crossed Keys is actually quite real. Originally founded in France as a loose association of hotel concierges helping one another provide the best possible service...it has since spread worldwide, and is considered a great honor among hospitality workers...the mark of someone who is dedicated to going above and beyond to ensure customer satisfaction. My youngest brother was, for a time, a chef in a highly rated London restaurant, and had associates and acquaintances scattered across the globe. As we are both Anderson movie fans, he told me of the Society as soon as he saw the Chapter heading that referenced them. Far from being secretive, they are simply 'discreet'...but it was the first time I had ever heard of them.

It got his most rave reviews and earned his most award nominations of any film that year.

This is one of my top 5 movies, I'm so glad you two are watching it. I make sure to enjoy this film at least once a year, but truthfully, I watch it whenever I feel depressed or sick. This, "The Life Aquatic with Steve Zissou," and "The Life of Pi" are my trinity of feel-good films. Fantastic Mr.Fox is very nearly there, as well. I'd say Gustave is a man who lives by a code of values that were fading by his time and that our modern jadedness has almost entirely snuffed out. He *is* the thin veneer of kind civilization. His "average" behavior is what many people would consider "good" or "great." He gives you a sense of a standard for behavior that you just dont feel from many people, if anyone. He is "Excellence" in human form. Easier to do when you're a made-up chracter, but not impossible, and fully worth aspiring to even if it was.

As he started making more movies and finding his specific style, there are certain actors who are always in his movies, like Willem Defoe and Bill Murray. Every time Wes Anderson does a movie, he seems to get half of hollywood to play small roles in it. If you enjoyed his style, you are in for a treat. My favorite Anderson film. Please continue with the others. Having Zero's beloved’s name be Agatha allows him to inscribe the dedication “from Z to A” in the book of poetry that he gives to her. Later, bilateral, palindromic symmetry is established by a mirror-image bookend when Henkels orders a search to be carried out “from Augenzburg to Zilchbruck.” The name of Jeff Goldblum’s Vilmos Kovacs seems to derive from those of cinematographers Vilmos Zsigmond and László Kovács, just as the name Madame D. could be taken as a Max Ophuls reference. The film also includes what is basically a shot-for-shot remake of a sequence in Alfred Hitchcock's TORN CURTAIN.
